Willie Rioli "on leave" from Port Adelaide after social media post

The only fair thing in this case is to let some players that he targeted send him abusive/threatening messages.

And let them say some abusive/threatening things to him next time they play, if it happened on field.

Then, after he gets a taste of his own medicine, he will think twice before he does it again.

Two wrongs don't make a right Mr java juice!

An eye for an eye leaves everybody feeling slightly better about what has just transpired.
I don't think I'll feel good regardless of the outcome. Willie doesn't seem to be enjoying his football at all, AFL seem more interested in damage control than the best interests of their players (I include both Rioli and the threatened parties in this), and Caro and her ilk are having a field day speculating/making up total shite.

What a mess

Willie's obviously done some really shitty things and needs to face consequences for that, some time away from the game and to get off social media, but it's interesting how you have people in here talking about how they can't wait to boo him, yet there wasn't any of that in the Balta thread (obviously he has been booed in practice but people didn't feel the need to preemptively celebrate that) or the thread about the Geelong player facing trouble on the Scandals board.

Wonder what characteristic it is that has people so keen to express how excited they are to boo which doesn't apply to those other players.

Like what is the point? This First Nations player has done far more sinister things than this First Nations player I booed all those years ago, so it's actually okay that I booed him? Then you place all of that against the backdrop of the racial abuse Rioli faced a few weeks ago (and to be clear, that DOES NOT justify Rioli's actions and on the flipside Rioli's actions DO NOT justify the racial abuse in hindsight) and it's pretty gross and probably helps explain the focus on inclusivitiy those same posters are decrying.

That's only true if you didn't actually read the Balta thread. Many thought he should've been in jail which is far beyond what anyone is calling for re: Rioli.

Inventing a narrative is cowardly

You might want to try reading the post again. I specifically referenced booing and there's pretty obvious reasons as to why people be keen to express their eagerness to boo Rioli.

You also might want to take your own advice about inventing a narrative or work on your reading and comprehension.

I know you specifically referenced booing. I stated that people were calling for even harsher community retribution for Balta so playing the race card makes absolutely zero sense.

Booing players is not an inherently racist act. People booing Goodes was racist. But not because they performed the act - it was racist because of why they performed the act.

My response to your statement addressed your specific example. On a forum you can't pretend people can't take that idea further and expand.

The Rioli’s would have experienced heaps of racism in their time in footy and have every right to feel aggrieved. It would make it hard to not feel like any criticism comes from a bad place.

What Willie has reportedly done is horrible, and the AFL should have come down much harder on him.

There is a large chunk of the AFL public who are quicker to pile on because of the colour of Willie’s skin, and will likely use this story to justify their prejudice.

All of these things can be true at once, and when you add in the tribal nature of footy it makes the whole situation grim as hell.

What is clear over the past month or so is that Willie probably isn’t in a great place mentally, and none of us really know what’s going on. There is a lot of justifiable anger around, and really I think this shows that once again, the AFL lacks leadership in a crisis. Their handling of this, and the Balta situation has been extremely poor.

i think it’s time for people to start processing the fact that Willie Rioli will be booed this weekend, and it’s purely to do with the facts that he’s behaved terribly and not been held to account. Also, its a Showdown.

There’s a large cohort of footy fans who think Rioli should be deregistered — absolutely laughable. Fine him, suspend him, then move on.
if the AFL had moved on this in a timely manner the incident goes in the rear view mirror, and we move on to the next scandal.
Punish him with a suspension for his stupidity and get him help away from the public spotlight.

Afl are saying they were not aware of the other incidents

The holier than thou AFL have egg on their face over this one, they actually thought they could let this slide and get away with it? Now it turns out he is a serial "threatener", but we all know why they have turned a blind eye to it. (Imagine the outcry if roles were reversed)
Kenny cops 20k for some footy banter with Ginnivan last year and Finlayson cops 3 weeks for a homophobic slur which he immediately apologised for, but IMO Rioli should get 4 weeks! The whole thing is nuts!

Guarantee there will be numerous people booing (at the least) Bailey Dale at TIO Saturday night. Will that be acceptable?
