I don't think dropping players en masse sends the right message after a night like tonight, because there's no way we can drop enough players that deserve it. Plus we don't have enough players to come in. Also our failures were ultimately structural across the whole ground, not really down to a lack of effort per se.

Instead I'd prefer we keep changes to a minimum and instead put the onus on the players to respond. We saw a glimpse of spirit at the start of the second half. Challenge the team to build on that and respond next week. Swinging the axe would just be shifting chairs on the titanic.
They didn't respond after last week. I agree there's only so many changes that we can do / that make sense, but there's some we can.

At least last week we could blame a lack of intent or pressure. Tonight we seemed to be genuinely trying but simply weren't good enough.

The concerning part is the complete lack of structure when we're trying to transition from defence. We can no longer pick our way through opposition zones by foot and we can't take a contested mark anywhere on the ground

Florent would have made the difference - lost it at the selection table.

I like fast players.
Tongue in cheek I know, but what happened to liking good tacklers? Given up that hope after 50 million missed tackles or unrewarded tackles by Swans players in 2025? Pies and Crows have both shown over the past two nights how ruthless tackling wins footy matches.

Everyone knows and understands we have injuries. But the good clubs have robust structures in place such that a player(s) from outside the best 22 can come in and do a job. Might not be at the level of the regular, but to a sufficient standard that the show can go on. This only occurs because of:
1) Good coaching (game plan, strategy, ability to think on the run)
2) Good leadership from within the playing group
3) Good list management with judicial drafting and trading balancing depth for the AFL team yet at the same time, and eye for the future.

1 and 2 have really fallen away this year. 3 appears to be years in the making with the chickens coming home to roost this year due to our injury toll.

A couple of random observations:
  • I didn’t realise how much we would miss Wicks. I suspect we also miss Cunningham to the same degree. Our defence has been appalling.
  • A huge part of that performance is on Mills. What other team in any code in Australia lets a player sit in the coaches box after getting themselves suspended, first game back from a long injury layoff.

The 7 hour grand final review has given the players PTSD

They are mentally done, no coming back from this sadly
I would have thought the 4 qtrs of the GF may have been more the culprit

We need big bodied players . It’s so noticeable how small we are .

Curtin is a second year player and he has a more mature body than nearly every player on our list
I keep saying this but keep getting scoffed at. It’s so noticeable our players particularly in the midfield aren’t big enough.

Rowbottom looks way too small.

Heeney is our only player that looks to match up size wise for his position.
Look at Geelong, every midfielder they have is huge, we need a Kennedy and / or Goodes type midfielder. We need to sacrifice speed for strength
