Cumming on 5AA: “message at 3/4 time was go for it, don’t die wandering” “our start in the last was based on attack”

So then with a lead we go defensive, concede shit load inside 50s and rely on opposition inaccuracy.

Cumming then goes on to say the last disposal we had in our front half was with 9mins 38 left. Wow.

Yep, nothing wrong with stopping attacking and go defensive. FMD, how can any one actually defend this?
The problem is that doing the right thing and attacking means Nicks has to essentially admit his defense first philosophy on football in flawed and he's either too stupid or too insecure to do that.

Against Port as well?
Possibly.

Don't remember the game so well but both games we won the individual quarters and the game so it doesn't seem like the biggest area of concern.

Regarding the most recent game, with 3min left it was in our forward half of the ground and we also kicked a goal with 8 min and 52 seconds left on the clock.

Obviously not great we were unable to move the ball further up in the dying minutes and hopefully it's something they focus on further. I do think if we were down, our kick outs would have changed to something more attacking and not from the 15 year old playbook of long down to the right.

Cumming said the review identified we didn’t have the ball in our forward half for 9.38 secs.

And if Neale doesn’t miss a sitter and we lose would it be an area of concern? Relying on opposition inaccuracy doesn’t seem to be a sound strategy, especially when Nicks said we were lucky!

Is it possible that rather than the coaches telling them to go defensive, the players got nervous and made that call?

We didn't have it in our forward half for a total of 9.38 seconds or it didn't enter our forward half with 9.38 seconds left?

Rayner had 11 score involvements with 2.2 of his own. I thought his power and ability to get clear in the midfield was big for the Lions getting scores, especially in the first half.
Was their Rachele up forward making all possessions count.

I feel like we haven't been a smart tap on side, but we saw two, walker and fogarty against the lions.
At the game it looked to me like we were trying to play like it was dry. Then we start tapping it on and what do you know, we start scoring. Pedlars goal was courtesy of a knock on by Rankine too

Just a theory I'm throwing out there but I reckon Nicks wants to win his way and is insecure about being found out as a fraud. I think that's why he keeps bashing his head against a wall with the defensive stuff. I think that's why he rejected help years ago and I think having blokes like Murray Davis join the club would only ratchet up his fear.

Sorry, but that's remarkably untrue.

Major sporting events are the highest earning destination tourism activity we have. The AFL is the most significant and consistent earner in the sporting space, and one of the biggest domestic tourism drivers overall.

It's actually the exact opposite of what you're suggesting.
In Tassie ? AFL is their most consistent and significant earner. I wasn’t talking SA. Maybe tone down the remarkably untrue but hey. The way we talk to people matters and you could say what you said without … well … frankly needlessly know it all and adversarial. What I said in relation to a post about Tassie was not the exact opposite of what I wrote. Their tourism dollar is driven by wilderness experience, not sport and 12 AFl games are year do not change that.

It’s funny isn’t it I heard McRae say he coaches his final minutes scenarios by asking players for input into hypothetical situations so the players get ownership. But on here nix asks the players for thoughts at 3/4 time and there is a meltdown.

Where’s the meltdown about that?

Interesting that he did ask the players and the answer was attack, go for it. We scored 5 goals doing that.

Do you think we 3/4 time Nicks asked them when we hit the lead what should we do? Or is it more likely that once we hit the lead Nicks took over again?

Imagine making this post about the highest scoring team in the league, sitting third on the ladder. Sometimes this forum is really on another planet.

Imagine not thinking it's at all weird that a team turned it's shit around after hiring somebody to assist a coach who had 5 years of failure under his belt.

Maybe there's only so much gambling that pays off until we're caught out so the plan was to take some speed off the game but couldn't get things moving again and just held on?
The idea is fine

We don't seem to trust our footskills at that crunch/shut down time though. Resort to the bail out option almost instantly.
