Trainor cleanly taking the Bont fumble and throwing it on the boot seemed a bit haphazard but it bounced perfectly for Vlastuin to run onto it, then he shows a clean pair of heels to Vandermeer and hits up the reverse lead of Seth Campbell :) nice

Great kick by Balta up the guts to Kaleb Smith in this play... solid work by Prestia then Taranto to get the ball out to Hopper and Hopper with a belter of a snap kick to get it through the goals; equally good from Lynch to wrestle with Lobb to prevent him from touching the ball as it sailed through!

Some quality individual stuff:

Balta closes gap on Naughton quickly and spoils him cleanly.

Nice over-his-head-no-look bull-handpass to Mansell from Ross here :)

HRS with a desperation dive to nudge Vandermeer to prevent his kick at goal

Vlastuin tackles Richards very well pinning one arm and he spins him so he misses the ball with his foot, for a HTB free in D50. (umpire on screen called play-on, but another umpire correctly called the incorrect disposal free)

Hopper with a strong contested mark with Bont right on his tail

Quality contested mark from Faull, to take one of those "down the line from full-back" kicks, for a change for the team

Some nice plays that ended up with bad conversion, but nonetheless are worth highlighting:

nice intercept by Banks to start with, KMac excellent outer-side boucning kick to Trainor's advantage; good teamwork from mansell and Trainor to allow Mansell to run inboard and hit up Faull on the lead, which Faull does well with his body to get rid of O'Donnell.

Great strong contested mark from Vlastuin to start this play... Good turn around of O'Donnell by Mansell and good hit up of Sonsie I50 who also takes a nice contested mark.

Excellent moves from Ross to beat McNeil to the ball and dodges around Dolan kicking underneath him for an amazing kick i50 to hit Sonsie's chest I50.

Faull with a quality I50 kick; Lynch obliges by taking a one-handed falling-backards mark :)

Just wanted to focus on Miller for a bit here; played a great game primarily on Naughton :)

Miller beats Hynes 1on1 near the point post and turns around, runs towards the goalsquare and kicks a centimetre perfect kick to HRS's chest

Miller with a quality 1on1 spil on Naughton

Just for some added perspective.

Dogs are AFL number 1 for disposal efficiency. We are 11th

Dogs AFL number 3 for clearance, we are 17th

Dogs are AFL number 1 for goals per game we are last

Dogs are AFL number 2 for inside 50s, we are last

Dogs are AFL number 2 for goal efficiency we are 15th

Long story short we were up against one of the elite sides of the comp who have had a lot of their prime movers out this year and are in the sweet spot of their football curve.
All that shows is where we are going wrong, yet what is done about it? Once again, in the VFL and AFL game, we just bombed it forward and got it turned over every time. We all knew how the season was going to go, but after the first game, we got false hopes. Just the same, I don't see an end result, nor much improvement. From selection problems to moving players around when they are doing a job in the first place. Dogs stats might show elite, but the table says otherwise.
Like I said, I might have fallen into the false hope camp, so just my take.

I can’t see any reason not to bring Hotton in and just play him on limited minutes in the AFL. He was so much better than anyone else we have available!
Can debut him as sub

Go on. Replace them with 3 different names vs bont, libba and kennedy and tell me we don't lose by 100+
Of course we don't have any better right now, although when Ross went in there we looked better. But they have some massive negatives to their games. Slow, turning circles of the Queen Mary, poor skills especially kicking. Every time Bont went forward, and he is no speedster, Taranto was 10m behind him unable to keep up.

McAuliffe if he didn't get injured would be close to replacing either on form and effectiveness. Why won't they throw someone like Mansell in there. It may not work, but it may. One thing you will know he will be hard at it and make life more difficult even if he was to tag. But they throw MacIntosh in there instead, who had a few good moments but makeshift at best.

The fact that Hopper and Taranto are in there together every week, especially when they are getting smashed, and nothing is done about it is team moral sapping.

Davidson is becoming a metronomic, repeat running, ever-available outlet between the arcs

Against teams like ours he also hits up leading fwds and bombs goals from 50

How many of those have we got?

But we preferred to leave a list spot empty instead of have a look at him, when we were rock bottom of the ladder :rainbow:
We chose Gray instead, who if should not have been dropped and was super impressive until injured. I like Davison at the time but was fine with Gray. Both look good players. Would also have taken McCarthy, but that's the way it goes.

When Kennedy was at Carlton they thought he was a dud. The dogs gave him a try, and he has excelled. Ed Richards was seen as a flanker, but the dogs gave him a chance in the middle and now, he could be an all Australian. If we tried a few of the kids in the middle, we may end up with similar success stories. If it costs us a few 100-point thrashings instead of 70-point thrashings who cares.

the crazy thing is that our kids are our best users of the footy by foot.
It's not that crazy, our game plan under Dimma didn't prioritise foot skills so we didn't prioritise that when drafting either. Then the AFL made some rule changes and it became clear that foot skills were going to be far more important. The club came out and said as much in the draft where we took Brown, Banks and Clarke (all clearly skilled kicks)

Going to take some time as those kids continue to mature and our other selections make their marks as well

Na we didn't choose Gray over him. We chose to pass.

We had four spots available at the time. I couldn't understand why we didn't use all four — even on six month contracts like the Bombers have done this year. Gave us the perfect opportunity to trial players to see if they were worthy of a list spot, and we didn't take it.
