Actually saw something yesterday that I rarely see from our players - the fundamental basic of shepherding a team mate who the ball. Wardlaw did it on one occasion which gave a team mate space and time to balance for a kick. Imagine if this BASIC football skill could be in grained into our players. It would force more of them to run harder for longer - and give confidence to the player with the ball - and hopefully produce better disposals.
This! You’re spot on. I’ve been yelling this out at the footy for years now - shepherd him!! This is just basic team stuff - the effort should always be there even if the skills aren’t - never gonna be a good team if you can’t play for each other and shepherd, tackle, smother, chase. Great smother by Parker on the boundary line yesterday too, that got me out of my seat!

At the game with my daughter yesterday (sitting left forward pocket beside the cheer squad), and the level of feralness from our supporter group was astonishing.

Special callout to the dick behind us calling Eleni a C*** at the top of his voice - you're a quality individual.

Oh - and for the game, no feelings, just numb most of the time these days.

But for those that think we were better, although I haven't seen the pressure ratings but I'm going out on a limb here to say that St Kilda's pressure appeared to be poor 1st and last quarters.

And as usual, when they did lift the intensity, we couldn't move the ball. Frustrating how many times they walked it from defense to attack, whilst we had crawled around the boundary with 27 kicks only to turn it over.

It really is astonishing to think that we still have no gameplan.

guy behind us was saying she shouldn’t be umpiring the men’s game because she’s a women and kept repeating it.

disgusting behaviour.

I hate this Eleni stuff, not because I think she's a great umpire, but because it is just misogynistic nonsense. There were a lot of awful calls yesterday, she is not unique and the quality overall is awful in umpiring. The AFL have - as usual - made things worse by adding an umpire to each game.

Agree, and although there were some average calls yesterday, it wasn't as one-sided or bad as everyone made it out to be.

I think once people watch the replay they will understand that.

This has been excruciating and sucked all enjoyment from footy for me.
Sums it up. Every year we look for that improvement and get none. Something has to give. Fans are dropping off - this will be catastrophic if we don't act. Sponsors buying memberships will eventually be found out. The fans need something to at least give us some hope we will be better in 2026. The saints game was the perfect test. We blew it, again.

How is it misogynistic to call Eleni a campaigner? She is a useless campaigner, along with the rest of the maggots.

People shouldn't be screaming out "campaigner" at the footy imo, but i don't see how it's misogynistic in any way.

They’re all campaigners.

Yep. It's dead set a chore to watch and support this club.

I imagine this is how it felt for Horace before the AFL put a dagger in Fitzroys heart.

I genuinely see no light at the end of the tunnel. Zero.

Strangely enough, and at the risk of most (all?) here calling me delusional, I have a more positive view of what lies ahead in the next few years.

We (North) are in very different times and circumstances to where Fitzroy was in 1996. In 1996, the AFL wanted us (Fitzroy) gone to be able to bring in Port Adelaide. There was nowhere near the vision that the AFL had then, as they have now (not that its vision is all that great now - Tasmania and roofed stadiums), but certainly they were far less ambitious in their expansion plans back then.

I choose not to get into bagging everyone associated with the club now, because firstly, while it might help my liver a little, what's the point, it achieves nothing and secondly, I honestly believe that each and every individual involved at the club, desperately wants things to be different. All of us, from Sonia down, I am sure would love to have a magic wand to wave and change so many things this year.

Like everyone else, I am disappointed that we do not seem to have made any progress this year in terms of games won and ladder position. I envisaged that we would win from 6/7/8/9 games and finish from anywhere between 12th down to 15th. I thought we would not have seen losses like we saw last week against Geelong. I thought we might have moved past that.

But I don't think things are quite as bad as most are saying in this thread. For example, most who have elected to participate in the Voting thread this week, have nominated Sheezel, McKercher and O'Sullivan, not necessarily in that order, as their 3, 2 and 1. Which reflects our first picks in each of our last three drafts. How good might these three boys be in another three years? (As to the 2025 Draft, Whitlock will make it. Mark my words.)

And while some may be questioning Wardlaw and in particular his lower output than we might have hoped for at this stage, there are a couple of important points to note on him.

First and foremost, he has had a terrible run through injuries/concussion. Secondly, I am reminded of Matt Rowell, who GC took with Pick 1 in 2019. His first couple of years were a little slower than might have been expected, but now he and Noah Anderson, Pick 2 in the same 2019 Draft, who showed more than Rowell from the word go, are now stars and the engine room at the GC, as that club prepares to play finals for the very first time.

It takes time this caper to build a team capable of playing finals and in our case, no doubt it is taking longer than any of us thought or hoped. I hate to raise it again, but in my opinion, I think our rebuild is still being hampered by the Post 2020 cull.

Of those culled, being Jamie Macmillan, Majak Daw, Jasper Pittard, Ben Jacobs, Paul Ahern, Mason Wood, Sam Durdin, Marley Williams, Joel Crocker, Lachie Hosie and Tom Murphy, only Mason Wood remains on an AFL list and ironically yesterday, kicked a goal and had 15 possessions. All of the rest would have been culled in the years since, but not all should have gone at the same time, as it removed far too much experience in one go. I think it put the process back a year or two.

It is quite scary to say this, but maybe the travails that the GC have been through, the seemingly forever disappointment that their supporters (whoever the half dozen of them are) as they have consistently failed to achieve anything until this year, might be something for us to hang onto. Eventually things do turn.

Perhaps Sheezel and Wardlaw will emulate Anderson and Rowell in the years ahead.

It is quite clearly a gendered term to start with that shouldn't be directed to a woman in the public sphere (or in general at an all ages event to be honest). It is misogynistic because many supporters call her out specifically and regularly when the reality is that she is literally just as bad as many of the other worst umpires.

Horace, I’m reluctant to correct you, lest I be accused of elder abuse. But Rowell polled 9 Brownlow votes in his first four games, before a season ending injury and then having year two ruined by injury. He was off to a flyer.

Haha. My error, however, I think the similarities are still there, if only the impact of injuries.

I watched the last 2 minutes clip again and I cannot understand why Hall was gifted a 50 after being paid a fairly soft, but understandable free.

But why was he allowed to play on and kick the goal instead of taking the set shot and kicking straight over the mark since he had the kick after the siren?
Not that it mattered in the end but this is why the umpiring in this game is amateur hour.

Also why was Nasiah allowed to just throw the ball out getting tackled no proper disposal and no free.

Then the commentators start falling over themselves to cover up every clearly bias and wrong decision.

She shouldn’t be umpiring AFL because she is useless, being a woman has nothing to do with how bad at her job she is.

But if the AFL are going to give her that role based on her gender, because it certainly isn’t based on competence, then what do you expect from people?

It’s your classic DEI madness in operation, where someone is given a job purely based on their gender without any thought on wether they are actually capable.

See also Laura Kane. That was a resounding success that appointment.

Away from the ball. He has been rubbish the last 6 weeks. Should be dropped
He also has a shocking habit of stopping after a mark instead of taking off and continuing the flow of play.

I noticed it this week where he had the opportunity to take off into space and chose to stop and go behind the mark, especially when he was boundary side and wouldn’t have his left foot shut down.

In that position we need him to go and drive the play forward and try and create overlap.

I like your optimism Horace but sadly, hopes and dreams don't win games of footy.

I'm worried for the club and its future, especially if the next couple of Clarko years are dismal.

I would love Harry and George to lead us out of the darkness, but they have equal chance of being beaten to death mentally if the rot continues...
