So so proud. Smashed the reigning champs in the mouth from the start and never let up. What a complete, even contribution across the board too, with maybe the exception of OD, no standout. That's what this team is all about, and it's what makes us a hard matchup, because everyone plays their role, we don't rely on a select few.

Big props to the Cats fans there last night. We are sometimes too nice of a crowd, so it was great to hear us become a little nasty (deservedly too) towards the umps and especially Cam Rayner. Despite it being at the G, it felt like a rare hostile home game at KP in that second half. We smelt blood and we liked it!

I'll take another two games like last night please!

Scores from stoppage against the Brisbane super midfield:

Geelong 7.8.50
Brisbane 3.3.21

15 scoring shots to 6 from that source. Consolidating us as the 2nd best team in the comp for scores from stoppage differential (Bulldogs 1st, but rubbish elsewhere).

Scott is a genius for how he has reconfigured the midfield and all supporting components. And he has done it with Dangerfield spending more time forward than at stoppages.

Verified old timer here.

My earliest Geelong memory is finishing on top of the ladder in 1980 and then losing the prelim to Collingwood by less than a kick… and then losing the 1981 prelim to the same club by a similar margin. 😢

The rest of the 80s sucked. Average teams with a merry-go-round of coaches (Devine, Haley, etc) who couldn’t seem to get us on track.

Then the ‘89-‘97 era was thrilling - who wouldn’t want to go to the footy every week when Gaz Snr is doing what he did - but ultimately heartbreaking. I remember sitting in the stands in ‘95 off a total destroyation of Essendon the week before, hoping against hope that 4th time would be a charm… and then realising early in the first after seeing Buddha trying to whack someone for the 2nd or 3rd time in a few minutes that that great Carlton team were going to do a number on us. 😢

Then things were a bit lean again from ‘98-‘03…

But my goodness hasn’t it been a privilege since then? We’ve had more than two decades now of sustained excellence.

My favourite ever moment at the footy is still just after half time in the 2007 GF, when Moons marked near the boundary line almost 50 out at the city end. I was directly behind that kick and watched it sail through from the perfect angle… and that was the moment I knew I was about to see my first ever flag. Of course you could say we had it won before then, but I didn’t let myself believe it until that moment.

So lucky, so grateful.

But not in the least bit ready for it to be over yet… there’s a 2025 flag to be won! Let’s go Cats!!
Even with the 44 year drought I'm still averaging one flag for every decade I've been on this planet the upcoming one will put me ahead of the curve.

After the Rayner goals, the crowd was about as noisy and antsy as I’ve ever heard a Geelong crowd. We are usually much too nice to get feral. It was good fun. Very pantomime villain stuff!

Was reminiscent of the crowd at KP the day Solomon caved in Ling's cheekbone with his elbow. They were baying for blood that day.

Related to this our midfield excels at winning a clearance off an opposition first possession

fp countClGWBWD
G first possession at stoppage423827510
B first possession at stoppage483711325

Both teams converted a first possesion at a stoppage into a clearance around 66% of the time

The was a big difference in what happend the other 3rd.

Almost 25% the time Brisbane won the first possesion at a stoppage Geelong ended up with the clearance, the other way around was 12%.

2/3rd of the secondary stoppages came from Geelong getting the first touch.

When we had hands on the ball we didn't just give it back to them on the outside, these stoppage turnovers are painful.

One of the things I really appreciate from last night is how we essentially controlled the game from the start and never really got flustered, even when the pressure came

C. Cameron may have kicked the opening goal 90 seconds into the match, but it wasn't exactly from dominant play by Brisbane and we then didn't allow them to get any early momentum

While it would have been nicer to take better advantage on the scoreboard with our first half dominance, we didn't let the behinds get to us or play too much on our minds, and seemingly reset & refocus to play each passage on its merit

And even when there was the odd time of Brisbane kicking a couple of goals in a row, we didn't wilt under the pressure or allow them to start bullying us - we played a very controlled, well structured final that showed we could work through the gears as needed

Usually send the email out on the weekend, letting us know, don't they?
Yeah

Someone I follow on Twitter shared the text they received from Collingwood yesterday which details it was ballot entry on Wednesday - they were rightly questioning the cost of the ballot entry

The ballot entry cost is such a total scam.
The AFL get lets say 50,000 members by 4 teams paying $5-10 for the chance to go into the ballot

Can’t remember the last time I heard a cats crowd that loud.
