2020 - not really; impossible to decipher that season anyway.

2013 - who knows. Freo were no slouches that year.

2008 - even in retrospect, we were not playing our best footy as the year came to an end.

2011 - nah by the end of the year we were the best.

2009. I love that game. Not handing that flag back.

We pinched 09.

11 we were deserved, the only team to beat Collingwood, and multiple times.

13 didn't we lose the prelim to Haw by 5 points?

08 we lost one game in the H&A?

20 was crap, I don't even count it as a GF appearance.

I did think at the time the decision to select Clark over Bews was a show of faith for Bowes. If you bring Bews in, he has to be a starter as a lockdown defender and Bowes is a strong candidate for sub. If you bring Clark in, he's the sub and it promotes Bowes to a starting position.

While his stats sheet wasn't anything crazy, I thought Bowes more than justified the selection call there. He really stood up as a wingman who drifted to half forward and made smart decisions all night. He was up for the fight in a contested sense and had some really deft touches of skill that Brisbane couldn't deal with.

Very happy for Jack, who also had a really good game in the QF against Port last year. He's had an up and down 2025, but has timed his run well.
Bowes was superb. Finals footy suits him.

MOC and Atkins can win their own ball and hurt you on the rebound.
Mullin is learning that as well.

The next generation of Cameron Lings.

If you can bring a 100% player down to 60% effectiveness while you're a 50%-70% player yourself, that's a massive win for the team. Please note, all three of those guys are 100% committed, but what I'm saying is that they are B-tier players who are negating A-Grade stars like a Daicos or a McLuggage.

Feel like we probably should have won the flag in 2013 and 2019. Those are two that I think we let slip.
I've said this before, but in hindsight I realised a lot of those mid/late 2010s teams weren't THAT good.

* Never found a permanent effective second KPF to support Hawkins (Wylie Buzza, anyone?).

* Fumbled a few drafts in that time, leaving a very unbalanced list by the end of the decade, with lots of older guys and some raw youth but not much in between.

* "Wasted" a few trades for guys that didn't deliver what we'd hoped.

* Our bottom 6 was nowhere near as good as it is now - a bit too much dependent on the stars and older guys.

* Injuries to a bunch of promising young talent sure didn't help.

Getting Cameron and a few others, plus the natural development of Miers, Close, Zuthrie, Henry, Holmes etc means we were a much more rounded and balanced team in 2022, and our list is in a much better shape than it was a decade ago.

I look back on 2020 the same way I do (say) 1994.....disappointed we lost, but acknowledging we weren't the best team in it and were arguably lucky to even be there.

Atkins has clearly put work into his disposal going inside 50, making him a bit of a weapon to go with his superhero-level tackle counts.

Mullin is starting to get some useful touches in congestion; I no longer feel anxious that he'll flub a kick under pressure. Progressing nicely.

O'Connor seems to have added just a bit of venom to his game; up until his last two matches I'd never really seen him get fired up about anything.

A Night to Remember for Geelong's Newest Irish Star

Oisin Mullin announced himself to the football world in a big way on Friday night, kicking his first career goal and stifling one of the games most damaging players
---

His 2025 campaign has been a crucial and underrated part of Geelong's success to this point, but on Friday night, Oisin Mullin showed that his game translates to the big stage, announcing himself to the football world in a big way.

The budding Irish star has been thrust into challenging negating roles against some of the competition’s best players throughout the year, but perhaps his biggest test came in the Qualifying Final, when he was sent to Brisbane on-baller Hugh McCluggage.

In a clear sign of how far his game has come this year, Mullin completely blanketed the Lions star and nullified his impact, holding McCluggage to just 14 disposals which was his lowest total since Round 1 of the 2023 season.

He was also able to hold McCluggage to just three clearances, well down on his season average (5.8) and just one score involvement, a telling factor in Geelong's triumphant performance at the MCG.

Embracing the moment and enjoying the challenge was Mullin’s motto this week, as he said his new role is helping to fast-track his development.

"It is so good, it is what Finals footy is all about," Mullin told Cats Media.

"The atmosphere was unbelievable and everyone was up and about, we got the result we came here for. Everyone is delighted.

"It is definitely something I embrace [tagging]. The coaches put a lot of trust in me to do that, to matchup against players of Hugh's calibre.

"It is enjoyable, and it brings you to the ball as well at times which is good. It helps my learning in the game."

One of the best moments in Geelong's barnstorming performance came late in the first quarter, when Mullin roved the front of a pack and quickly snapped through a brilliant goal, the first in his AFL career.

He was made to work for it after kicking seven straight behinds across his first 40 games at the top level, but the buildup was more than worth it as he brought the MCG to its feet.

What made the moment even sweeter for Mullin was that his parents were in attendance, the Irishman talking through his goal with Cats Media following the game.

"It all happened pretty quickly," Mullin said.

"I got a bit excited after, I was out of breath for the rest of the quarter as it played out but it was definitely pretty special.

"My parents landed over here on Tuesday, so I saved it for however many games I have played.

"I have kicked about seven or eight behinds so I was just saving it for them to get over, but I was delighted to do it while they are here."

Can't not love COS. He's a star in the making, seems a genuinely great kid who speaks so well and media has come easy for him, clearly a future leader alongside Holmes.
Future is bright when we keep bringing in blokes like him.
Earlier this year I made a comment something like 'I'm not sure O'Sullivan is ready for the jobs he's being given'.

And that may still be true if we play Adelaide.
But you've got to love the way he just goes for the ball.

On Friday night I said to myself 'I might be wrong on that one now'.

Agree with most of this.

2009 we were lucky, but I see it as compo for 2008...

In 2011, apart from the fact that we matched up so well on Collingwood, there was also the fact that the wheels started to wobble on the Pies toward the end of the season - their last five weeks were pretty ordinary, and they came back to earth in 2012. We weren't the best team through the year, but we absolutely were by the end of it.

2013, we were lucky to be even close to Hawthorn by the final siren as they conspired to kick themselves out of it.

2020 wasn't crap IMO - it was a pretty even year, and we just played out of our skins in the Prelim to get us through against Brisbane.

Now that the dust is settling on a season-best performance, do we think Scott was playing 4D chess when we lost to the Lions at KP?

In that game we had:
  • Mullin on Charlie Cameron while McCluggage smashed us
  • MOC floating around without a clear role (only 8 possessions)
  • Jack Martin at half back
  • Danger getting frostbite in the forward line, only attended 2 centre bounces all game

Fast forward to Friday night:
  • Mullin holds McCluggage to his lowest possession count since R1, 2023
  • MOC close checking Rayner and does just as good a job as his role on Heeney a few weeks ago
  • Jack Martin has replaced Henry forward and added a new dimension
  • Danger attends 14 centre bounces and 14 of his 19 possessions come outside of forward 50.

I wonder if Scott was allowing the Lions to show most of their cards that night, as he got to work on a plan to nullify their strengths when it mattered.
