Review Cats into ANOTHER PRELIM (14 of 18) after beating Lions by 38 points

They showed footage of Cam Rayner sooking it up to the umpires behind the play on First Crack last night, moments before he flopped for a free. So he's not only a flopper, he's a sook as well.

Now that the dust is settling on a season-best performance, do we think Scott was playing 4D chess when we lost to the Lions at KP?

In that game we had:
  • Mullin on Charlie Cameron while McCluggage smashed us
  • MOC floating around without a clear role (only 8 possessions)
  • Jack Martin at half back
  • Danger getting frostbite in the forward line, only attended 2 centre bounces all game

Fast forward to Friday night:
  • Mullin holds McCluggage to his lowest possession count since R1, 2023
  • MOC close checking Rayner and does just as good a job as his role on Heeney a few weeks ago
  • Jack Martin has replaced Henry forward and added a new dimension
  • Danger attends 14 centre bounces and 14 of his 19 possessions come outside of forward 50.

I wonder if Scott was allowing the Lions to show most of their cards that night, as he got to work on a plan to nullify their strengths when it mattered.
Yep I said something similar on the main board. I think you are spot on. Either that or he was very naive midseason and then adapted. But a few moves were saved for a bigger occasion deliberately IMO.

Agree with this 100%. He’s very intelligent, why show an opposition all your cards before finals.
The other change he’s made that I suspect even surprised him, is the power or two A-grade taggers. Mullin and O’Connor tagging the two best or most dangerous opposition players has been a brilliant move. We haven’t lost since it’s been fully executed.

MOC and Atkins can win their own ball and hurt you on the rebound.
Mullin is learning that as well.

The next generation of Cameron Lings.

If you can bring a 100% player down to 60% effectiveness while you're a 50%-70% player yourself, that's a massive win for the team. Please note, all three of those guys are 100% committed, but what I'm saying is that they are B-tier players who are negating A-Grade stars like a Daicos or a McLuggage.

I believe Mullin will evolve into an A grade midfielder eventually.

He's only been playing the game 3 years, his progress has been astronomical.

We pinched 09.

11 we were deserved, the only team to beat Collingwood, and multiple times.

13 didn't we lose the prelim to Haw by 5 points?

08 we lost one game in the H&A?

20 was crap, I don't even count it as a GF appearance.

I fully agree 2020 was crap and not a real GF appearance.

I consider myself an expert on the 2020 AFL season however (what an accolade 🥴) as I was stuck at sea for 5 months straight and watched every single game played.

Geelongs best was the best that season, imo.....then Dusty happened.

I have been trying to understand the Brisbane style of play recently. They almost play a netball style at times which is very boring.

Then they can switch into a zig zagging handball game which can open up teams and frees up a player or two. That part of their game is impressive and good to watch. The cats managed to spoil their handball game somehow.

Going back to the netball comparison, I am not trying to disparage netball at all. And I am not saying the flopping was anyway related to that either. Netballers are much tougher than that and don’t flop.

This may have been posted somewhere/elsewhere- apologies if so- but it does seem to hold up that the team each year that has used the least number of players in a season, wins the GF.
On that basis, we should win.
I'd love to be able to research that stat, say from 2007, our first current flag, and see if it holds up.
Lions 36 players last year- the least- Flag.
Cats 35 players 2025- the least-....?
Not sure if that can be ratified.

It certainly is a rapid keepings off game requiring precision disposals, and if they are pressured enough, it falls apart. Our pressure was insane.
I suspect we will need that against Hawks to the same degree- hunting and harrassing them ad nauseum, and we win.

Agree. I should have also added that there are quite a few throws and drops in their handball game. Somehow they get away with it.

So assuming we get over Adel/Hawks would we prefer Pies to take on Bris or GC or doesn’t matter? Think Bris would give Coll a more bruising encounter but then you could see them winning and being a harder match up than either Pies or GC in a GF.

Suppose just take whoever we get…

Pies because we match up well against them and offensively they are poor and as good as their defence is we wont play into that.
The counter to that is brisbane are very banged up and if they get there they could be cooked and we flog them 2022 style. But brisbane still have enough matchwinners to turn it if they turn up id rather get Collingwood. But we should beat either. Anything less than a flag from here is a worse failure than last year was.

Last year we were about the 6th-8th best team on most of the important metrics. We were a 1 in 6 chance of a flag really. Hindsight makes it look worse because of what Brisbane did to Sydney. Was it an opportunity missed? Sure. But we weren't actually amazing.

This year we are 1st-4th on those KPIs and are the standout team. Premiership standard.

The Pies at their best earlier in the year could say the same, and now have a fit JDG who is their finals MVP. They do pose a big threat but we have a premiership profile (unlike in 2024).

I do agree that we weren't the best team last year. My comments about that have been more around the fact that by the prelims it was very clear Sydney were cooked and the winner of that prelim was likely walking it in the next week. And we had that prelim in our keeping until 10 minutes of poor play. So while we weren't the best team we should have won the flag from there-how the Holmes issue in the prelim was handled was one of the few times we have got tactics wrong and it cost us too.

This year is different we are pretty much the best offensive team (apart from goalkicking which i hope will be better next game) and we are very good defensively. So in my eyes it would be a much bigger failure than last year if we dont at least make the GF and we don't win it.
