Wouldn't finishing 6th represent real progress and therefore be positive? Surely winning a final is an acceptable step in the right direction for a team that finished 12th this year
Idk about the Sainters but I would think finishing in that range would be considered a bit of a disaster with all the money thrown out this off season?

What if the Saints finish between 12-6th again next year after all their chest beating this off season?
Then they'd be able to wave at their neighbours the blues.

I think you would find that many of us would be very happy with winning a final if we could see evidence of real growth. Certainly wouldn't be a disaster. I feel like setting a Prelim final as the pass mark is unrealistic for a team that finished 12th the previous year

What are you talking about, the salary cap is the same for everyone?
Sure, but if the Saints have just committed huge dollars tying up a large portion of their salary cap for numerous years into the future they'd be hoping for some genuine success no?

Not like they'll be WCE next year struggling to even meet the minimum payments.

Sure they'll be disappointed if they don't make finals just like most clubs will next season.

Their money has to be tied up in one way or another. Do you think St Kilda still be the same, worse or better next season?

Obviously Ross the boss has thrown in the towel on developing younger players and has told the Saints admin department "get me some ready made players, i don't know what i'm doing with this lot currently". Ross the boss wants players he can coach not babysit! This has got "backfire" written all over it!
You are aware that we have one of the youngest lists in the league and was pumping games into young players quite a big yeah?

We front ended a lot of deals, and out of 2025 cap space we only still reached 83%, so front ended more deals to reach 95% cap floor as a result can pay 105% of the cap in 2026 (aka can front end the money splurge this off season)

Its creative cap management and perhaps a new way to list build

I am aware that Ross Lyon has a history of failure when it comes to the development of young players. If they had faith in that young list they wouldn't have to go fishing for A grade players only to end up with B Graders like Silvagni, Flanders and TDK? Nup, Lyon has packed it in and gone the easy route, after 3 years back at the helm he has done no better than Brett Ratten's 3 years.
Ross Lyon Coaching over the past 3 years 70 (33–37–0)
Brett Ratten Coaching record over 3 years 68 (34 -34 -0)

So you ignored what I said and just went on little rant.

St Kilda has been putting a lot of games into young players, reals over feels buddy.

Are you saying that if St Kilda, like most teams in the competition, are paying the full salary cap to contacted players then they should expect to "genuine success".
So almost every team in the competition should expect some "genuine success".

Again, Ross Lyon does not have a good track record of developing players, it appears he has some mystical hold on the Saints administration and now they are desperately trying to fill out that list with some good B listers? I understand Saints fans will fall for this also, but the real problem is Lyon is an overrated coach in charge of a fairly dud list. Now they are trying to justify his return by buying up big in the hope they finish 8th next year? If this all falls flat and it most likely will, the Saints should look at a merger with the newly formed Tasmania? From Saints to Devils, it might work?

Again with the rant, want to try again? (PS this the out you should take)

You cannot deny that NWM, Windhager, Owens, Garcia, Caminiti, Hall, Boxhall, Phillipou, Wilson have been developed across the last 3 seasons (How many names do you actually know?)

I'd deny it.

NW-M for sure. Windhager looked pretty good this year. Hall looks ready made.

Not sure there's really much development from the others as yet though is there?

Garcia has pretty much taken Steele's spot in the side, Owens has played KPF which has been via necessity but still is making impact, Wilson spent time in the 2's after a meh year but he came back a best career game vs GWS after a pretty good first year, same with Phillipou who again 2023 was good, hit the ressies but then late 2024 had the form, sadly injured this year but even then came back late/

The club has a young list and has pumped a lot of games into younger players.

It's not like Geelong's team is only made up of players they have drafted and developed, they have bought a lot of recruits too.

Geelong are trying to recruit Marshall to replace the other ruckman that they recruited from St Kilda in Stanley, that's not to mention all the other players they have recruited from other clubs like Dangerfield, Cameron, Smith, Stengle, Martin and Bowes.

Every club has a mix of players that they drafted and developed themselves and players that they recruited from other clubs.

They’ve drafted well recently. The narrative they deflect from and the entire reason they’re having to do this - it has nothing to do with ‘we cannot rebuild through the draft because it’s compromised’. They stuffed up successive drafts and as a result have a big gap between the young good guys and the veterans.

All the guys they’re targeting are to address their drafting errors of the past and fill those gaps. Which is fine.

But it doesn’t sound as sexy as the draft is corrupt.
