News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

The laughable thing is they think if the suns win a premiership with the help of their inflated picks and assistance - everyone in QLD will stop caring about rugby league and become AFL fanatics.
Even though we have clear evidence from the Melbourne storm that this will never happen and winning a couple of premierships barely causes a ripple in terms of changing culture of sports fans.
What are they expecting - 50k to start attending suns games and a new stadium to be built if they win one or two flags? WTF

As for Mick Ablett - thank **** we only hear from him once a year.

What was worse is their obvious manipulation of the narrative with the broadcaster to try and prevent any criticism to their own ridiculous system.

Is Fox the Chinese State Media now?

- Broadcaster no longer showing what picks clubs are using to match academy and father son bids. To prevent the average fan criticizing teams using junk picks like Ashcroft and have screenshots forever.

- Clearly advising the broadcaster to ram down viewers throats the fact the points system has changed. They even gave the hosts words and sentences to use. They were all using the same language. Like “indicative draft order”, “fair price” etc

Mick Ablett and Sarah Jones were complete embarrassments last night.

Ablett particularly making out like clubs were getting “put to the sword” and it’s the first time we’ve ever had a “real indicative draft order” and that having 2 QLDers in the top 5 is what the academy system is all about and such a massive win for the AFL - What a complete shameless w***er missing the point.
And it isn't even just last night, it will continue in to the future. They will be praised for smart recruitment when they had sole access to this talent. They will be praised for getting deals done like Rioli and Trac when they can do these deals because they can value high picks the same way a multi billionaire values loose change.

They clearly decided going back to that Anderson draft that they were going to ensure the Suns turned this around no matter what it took. It will make the inevitable flag tilt that i would otherwise not even care about so infuriating to watch.

Utterly farcical.

Why did the afl quietly remove the rule that existed up till 2023 that a finals side could only match a max of 2 bids in the first round for NGA or Northern academy players?

Coincidentally just as their nepo babies stated to move towards finals contention.

Because they changed the discount and the DVI.

Suns gave up a truckload last year, this year, and future picks to be able to get their 4 players.

Mick ablett is a moron with this.

It’s almost like GCS positioned themselves last year, this year (including trading out players) and next year to take the academy guys.

Equally WCE bid on a guy who was projected at 25-35 range at 18 to make a point because they knew GCS had committed to this fellow.

No they didnt. They were able to trade out 2 top 10 picks and still match 4 r1 bids with non r1 picks. The system is broken deliberately.

Yes they did.
They traded Lukosius and a 1st rounder last year to be able to carry 3 x 1sts into this year.
Then they traded 4 best 23 players out this year, and future picks.

I can't seem to find the details anywhere.
What picks were used by GC, BL, Carl to match the bids?

Wasn't publicised in either the Fox or AFL coverage or in the tracker.

Great governance and oversight for the league.

Im sure the clubs see it.

However it's clearly been removed for that reason, we don't see Gold Coast land their fourth first rounder for 55, 57, 59, 61, 68.

Its almost like only a select few clubs have the system set up for them so they could have 4 potential first rounders available to them before any other club can touch them.

Only one of which was worth a 1st rounder themselves.

A reminder, we are talking about them trading that package for Picks 2,5,17,18 of a national draft + Christian Petracca, Daniel Rioli, John Noble and Jamara Ugle-Hagan.

For any club to achieve that, it should have almost required both Anderson AND Rowell in any package.

That is the core issue.

How many players have ever been traded for Pick 2 & 5? The answer is none, certainly in recent history. Judd you could ague didn't, as Kennedy certainly didn't hold Pick 5 value after his start at Carlton.

Arguing Flanders and Luko (after his disapointing first half of his career) and a bunch of periphery best 22 players for 2 top 5 picks and another 2 R1 picks is purely clutching at straws.

My god people dont get it. They were pushing fiorini and Ainsworth out to make space for the academy guys. They are fringe players not significant losses. They lost nothing except Flanders.
And you simply should not be able to trade out your top 10 pick and match a top 10 bid unless you trade back in a top 10 pick it should be banned. It is a complete rort that doesnt represent the price paid for picks in the real world.

You can't match with junk picks anymore.

The Suns positioned themselves 18 months out to match bids this year.

They had 6 x picks inside the Top 36, none of which are 'junk' picks and have gone into defecit for 2026 to match on 4 kids.

So they got 4 kids in the Top 20 for 6 picks in the Top 36 - so hardly complete daylight robbery and they had to give up a fair bit to get 6 selections in the Top 36, they didn't just materialise.

I was never a fan of the old system, but the new system is much better. People just don't bother to understand it.

They also have Coulson, Collins and some others on the radar, but can't match (which they could have under the old system, given the amount of picks they accumulated via trades)

It's absolute daylight robbery.

What picks did they use to get the 2nd and 5th picked players in the draft?

It's OK. It's all good.

They had to trade out a F1 last year to build up part of this arsenal.

.....................

Which they were able to do because they used a bunch of junk picks to land Leo Lombard at Pick 9 AND still sent a kings ransom to Richmond for Daniel Rioli.

Which they were able to throw away because they landed Jed Walter (Pick 2), Ethan Read (Pick 9) and Jake Rogers (Pick 14) for a mass of 2nd and 3rd rounders the year prior.

And they landed Petracca, Rioli and Ugle-Hagan in the same period at the trade table.

Pretty easy to carve off the likes of Elijah Hollands, Sam Flanders and listen to some discussion around Bailey Humphrey when you have already replaced them since drafting them with 6 first round midfielders since they were drafted and you accumulated them with batches of 2nd and 3rd rounders.

this might surprise you, but queensland and victoria are not the same

Academies have to be severely restricted.

Ability to match only one first round academy player in the first round.

Apply that to F/S as well.

Give them NGA like the rest of the league and the rest can go into the open pool.

Or simply close the draft to those with academies and it's for VIC/WA/SA ONLY.

They have their zones. So that is their talent pool. As we keep hearing.

It's not as if the other clubs have real access to it anyway.

Not a single club could draft Zeke Uwland or Jed Walter. I don't care about a player a club chooses they don't want.

There should be no choice and sloppy seconds.

Otherwise an Auction process and the Academy club gets a 5% discount as return of the development process, which is mostly funded via the AFL anyway, because of equalisation.

If West Coast actually want Zeke Uwland, they can get him, they just need to outbid GC, which should be fairly simply given their pick location. The Academy side gets no veto or any other priority other than the 5%.

An Auction process where there is no priority given to the Northern Academy other than the minor discount is REAL fair value.

The exact same auction process should apply to Father/Son.

IF there is a bidding war (for say a Sam Darcy) where you theoretically exceed Pick 1's points value or more, the entire competition benefits, as it sucks draft picks out of the draft and everyone else's picks come in.

If Carlton grow the game in non-traditional markets I’d happily give them a second academy on top of the one you already have!
