The Geelong Cats have given forward Nathan Ablett time away from pre-season training to help him deal with the pressures of football.

“Nathan met with the club’s leadership group to explain his position and they are supportive of him and wanted to help him get in the best frame of mind for the 2008 season,” Geelong’s general manager of football operations Neil Balme said.

“He explained to the club’s leadership group and the coaching staff that he was feeling extra pressure and all parties felt it best that he take time away from the club.

“Nathan is not the first AFL player to go through this and the club is supportive of his need to take time away from the club.”

REALLY HOPE IT IS ONLY A SHORT TERM THING!! LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MOONEY, ABLETT AND HAWKINS NEXT YEAR!!

GO CATS 2008!!!

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

I think the team has probably known for a little bit, seeing what they have drafted etc. May give Grima a Chance to be the nominated rookie also. I hope Nathan finds what hes looking for.

BREAKING NEWS: RELUCTANT Geelong forward Nathan Ablett yesterday dropped a pre-season bombshell by informing the Cats he had retired just three years into a promising football career.

The Cats spent yesterday convincing him to instead take several weeks to clear his head, before coming back to them with a decision in late December.

The 21-year-old had played a key role in Geelong's drought-breaking premiership win just nine weeks ago but has told the club he has no interest in playing on.

Nathan, the youngest of the Ablett brothers, has lived with his father in Jan Juc and had only this year confirmed his standing as an outstanding attacking talent.

But while older brother Gary is seen as a future captain, Nathan shied away from the limelight and had to be repeatedly convinced by the club he should attempt an AFL career.

Geelong's premiership season was his breakout year, the quietly-spoken full forward playing 21 games and kicked 34 goals, including three in the club's Grand Final win over Port Adelaide.

It was felt the win would provide the former Modewarre bush footballer with the confidence he would need to blossom into a key attacking weapon for the Cats.

His decision comes 48 hours after his father came clean about his past drug addiction and the circumstances surrounding the death of young fan Alisha Horan in 2000.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Pretty sure he just retired completely :thumbsu:

More like most other teams are hopeful he has. I doubt he will, he's put alot of effort in to get to where he is. Remember his father retired and come back a few times.

Regardless, we've got a guy named Tommy that could fill his place pretty quickly after a full pre-season.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

The kid has serious issues. Out Nathan IN Tommahawk. Only dedicated players should be in our 22.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

woah out of left field.

well to me it is anyway. i remember chris tarrant did the same when he was 20 or so from memory but obviously came back

be a shame if he does throw it in

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Haha I love reading the different angles on the issue from GFC.com and the Herald Sun. Will be interesting to see how it turns out. Would put a big hole in our forward line... Can Hawkins play a full season? Can one of the new players step up?

Maybe!

While were at it, lets all try to think of the most ridiculous conclusions and jump at them like they are the truth!

Thats what Geelong supporters usually do.

If he does retire, we will still have another 21 premiership players on our list.

How many will you have?

Did anyone read in The Herald Sun today he commented that Ablett should "go away and overdose"??? Real class act.

As for Nathan, it's disappointing to see, but to be honest I'm not all that surprised about it. It's just his whole body language out on the field... sometimes he seems a bit disinterested (imo). He certainly doesnt share the same passion for footy his brother has.

Hopefully, he will come back "bigger, better and stronger than ever" and have a great career at the GFC. All the best Nath. :):thumbsu:

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

We all knew this would happen the day Nathan walked into the club. Now he will be remembered as a minor contributor to our remarkable three-peat in the pages of history.
