Under 23s trial game between Port & Crows

Only watched the last quarter so far but thought Amon was fairly useful in it. I’m hoping the bollocking he’s getting here is about the first three quarters and not a “whipping boy hangover” from his poor last season.

Drew straight into my Supercoach.

Billy around the ground still makes Jackson Trengove look like well coordinated, agile gazelle. Marshall on the other hand would probably be able to tie that gazelle’s four feet together before it knew what was happening. And Mahney would probably skin it with his bare teeth.

The bollocking Amon copped was based on the first half. He was terrible. Improved after that though.

Carn.

In Marshall's first year he had kicked 1 goal across 3 games. Fogarty kicked 9 across 10 games . The point is there's no realistic and arguable difference between them at the moment.

But there is, and I set it out in detail, and for some reason you ignored it.

Marshall has had an extra year and arguably done bugger all more.

All subjective arguments about their talent and suitability for the modern game aside, it is not arguable that a guy who kicked 9 goals over the space of 3.5 games before copping a concussion and then having his life torn apart by the death of his father before he had a chance to come back has shown 'bugger all more' than a guy who has kicked 9 goals in his 10 game career.

I just watched the first half, the tackling was probably the biggest plus for me (particularly in the first qtr), it was the old Port team style tackling, where once the oppo player was claimed they usually weren't allowed to get their arms free.

There were some very good signs from a number of the new draftees and the younger players, but of the more unheralded I liked the way Pudney kept presenting at the fall of the ball, with natural improvement and a couple of seasons in the system I reckon he could be a genuine chance to make the grade.

On the negative side, I can recall leaving Alberton after a number of Maggie's games last year with the opinion that Ladhams had no idea how to use his size in ruck contests, and I have seen nothing from him so far to make me change that opinion.

Well that was a good game on replay.

Thought Drew, Bonner and Broady were my standouts.

Drew, Farrell, Frampton, Hewett, Marshall, Butters, Garner and Patmore all also impressed with clean hands around the contest.

Loved the intent from butters, duursma and drew to impact the contest. Thought Amon grew into the match.

Only disappointments were Ladhams - no impact, and Burton - Poor kicking. Will be two of Burton, Liebert and Bonner I reckon. JLT will be interesting.

Mahney looks like a looney. Loved it. Needs to rock up to games in a straight jacket and get released just before the siren. I'd be intimidated.

Mahney is a magpies player ? Saw him play looked good had a real presence.

A cult figure in the making?
The kinda bloke you warm to because, well I dunno, because he makes me smile.
Kicking action is not textbook but effective if the wind is from the Northeast

Totally agree about the tackling intensity. It looked great yesterday from the youngsters.

You bloody bew-tee!

Lokan must be breathing a sigh of relief at the talent he has to work with this year.
Most of our first 22 backline were playing, apart from Hammer, Clurey and our new captain so shows how young that group is.

Watching the replay again, I think it’s a real testament to our list management team. I’m super stoked with our young defenders and we have a fair bit of young talent in the midfield as well.

If we manage to lure a rankine or lukosious back in a couple of years, and presuming that Hayes doesnt have too much of an issue getting over his injury, I think we have an exceptional list core going forward.

Lienert is in our first 22 backline.

My impressions from the replay are that Butters and Duursma were both very good. Butters does a lot of clever inside work, and already showed yesterday that he has great vision from congestion, hitting up players 20-25m away with short, precise passing despite being in traffic. The kick to Johnson in the last quarter was an example of that. Matt Crouch and Caleb Daniel have that skill and it has been lacking from our midfield until now.

Duursma works hard to find space. He is a neat footballer who does not go missing in the contest. Moves well, links up, kicks with penetration.

I liked Frampton’s game more than others clearly did. He had some strong follow up efforts in the ruck and worked well with the mids to release them by handball.

Cox showed he can play. He is a confidence player but clearly can mark the footy under pressure. He led at the ball well.

Pudney and Frederick didn’t look at all out of place. Both show something that makes me think they could develop into good AFL standard players. Pudney gets to the drop of the ball very well. None of his disposals stood out as being poor in their execution. Frederick plays a robust, back pocket game.

Garner also has assuredness and composure. Really rate him.

Patmore did a bit early, and Farrell while quiet, has just a class about his kicking that stands head and shoulders above everyone else on our list.

A lot to like.

FWIW, I think we have a little less to gain from the return of mature/older players than the Crows do. Our kids are better IMO, but I rate their older players more highly than ours.

Lol they are both short but Bailey has the more pronounced beard.

In fact most of our high performance guys are like 2 foot 3 except for Josh Manuel who they pilfered from Westies a while back who is a giant.
If Bailey’s the guy who kinda resembled Gimli last year and always ran the warm up at SANFL games, I reckon he’d be more likely to be working with Mahney.

Yeah, I went to school with Josh (in the same year level) and have noticed him in a few photos around the place in the past year. He’s an interesting character but was very into his fitness/bodybuilding/CrossFit from about year 11 onwards. What’s his specific role at the club, do you know?

Matthew Lokan to be on fiveAA with Timmy G in a minute.

This is pretty much how I saw the game too, Frampton in particular.

It really isn't.

I haven't watched any preseason training and didn't see the intraclub game last week, so I can only base my opinion on late season performances and competition for spots.

I thought he was good but not great in the games he played after his debut match (which was a particularly strong performance). In the games against Collingwood and Essendon where the whole team sucked, he was fair to good. He handled some pressure balls like a hot potato, but was not as bad in that regard as Pittard and was better defensively than Hombsch - both of those guys are gone now.

I happen to rate Clurey, and think he remains a lock in our side based on a strong 2018.

I therefore have Jonas, Howard and Clurey as our three taller defenders.
DBJ is our lock-down small defender.
We then have several options for the HB flanker/intercept mark roles: Hartlett, Houston, Burton, Lienert, Bonner, Broadbnt.
I've listed them in that order because that's how I rate them at this stage.
I would pick Hartlett, Houston and Burton ahead of Lienert as of now. Burton's form yesterday was a little shaky IMO, but we're hardly not going to select him for the round 1 game.

So it leaves us with a decision of how many of these options we pick.

Again that's my rating of them. Others clearly think Lienert is ahead of Clurey. I don't see it that way, yet. Maybe I will after 2 JLT games.

At the moment I’ve got Clurey, Jonas, Howard, Houston, Byrne-Jones, Hartlett, Burton and Bonner with Broadbent and Lienert missing. Bonner just makes it for me because he is more versatile and can cope better playing on a wing.
