Any chance we could make the season opener not the same teams every year?

Maybe so ... but the opinions of 6.4 million Victorians outweigh that of 2.7 million in WA or 1.7 million in SA.

Do 6.4m Victorians really want this fixture? This thread and the previous 10 years versions of it would suggest not.

Call me crazy but I reckon Collingwood or Melbourne vs Richmond would generate a lot more hype than Carlton. But hey they got a massive crowd last year and no doubt millions watched it on TV (as opposed to all the other games of footy on offer) so why would they change?

be nice if the AFL could schedule a game on the opening night rather than a Richmond training session

Fortunes of teams ebb and flow. As good as the Bulldogs, Saints, North, even Geelong were at times, they aren't huge draw cards in their own right. Geelong vs Hawthorn is a drawcard combo, but the AFL has that penciled in for Easter Monday. And while many of us really just want to see a good game of footy the bean counters want a big crowd.

The AFL are #blessed right now that Richmond, Collingwood and Melbourne are all strong. Hawthorn have dropped off a bit but still made the top 4 last year and both their finals drew 90k. At a stretch you could build a hype case for Essendon being on the up. The finals saw 4 x 90k all Vic finals, Collingwood got 70k against GWS and then the GF had something like 2 empty seats. Cha-ching at AFL house.

But no, the AFL insist on Carlton - who in the last 5 seasons have a best finish of 13th. 1st vs last is a pretty shit spectacle.

Don't worry, soon we will be told to "look for glimpses of hope" for Carlton. Like I give a shit. Put on a competitive match to open the season. The suggestion of premiers featuring in the season opener seemed pretty popular and unfurling the flag at home..

I get why Richmond/Carlton fans would want to watch it, but surely the average Vic fan would want to watch a better game. If it was Melbourne Geelong or some other match up. Crows West Coast would be a better game. You'd get a good crowd if you played it at another time. I'm getting to the point of switching it off. I cant be the only one.

The thing I don’t get is why Carlton want to be involved with this game, they should be requesting an opening game against another bottom 4 club. Poor management in my view. The best interests of football should be their priority.

So we just barrack for Carlton to be competitive all night, in the hope of it being close in the last 3 mins?

There should be no permanent fixtures. Nothing to do with the two clubs playing currently.

Grand finalists seems like the obvious choice
