You can judge geelong after 22 games rather than 3 then.

Round 15 is enough...

Refer 2016 for reference... North Melbourne won their first 9 games. 9-0. And went on to win 12 games for the season and finish 8th.

AFL is becoming like NBA.. all that matters is the end. Early season means nothing and there is a lot of fluffiness going on, and players not playing accountable football, hence a lot of teams not turning up at the moment. Geelong is off to a hot start.. but premiership material? too early to make that call imo..

Western Bulldogs 2016
Richmond 2017
West Coast 2018

Not many people outside fans of these clubs would have thought any of these were going to be premiers after round 3 of their respective premiership years.

Then you can wait until Round 15 and judge .

Yeah I absolutely give them credit. They are a very good team. But I would like to see them under some intense pressure. The type that Richmond applies. Or West Coast over in Perth. They don't play Collingwood again, so we won't be able to see that match up again until finals, if we meet there...

So don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Geelong are crap or garbage or anything like that at all. I actually thought before round 1 that Dahlhaus and Rohan were excellent pick ups, even when everyone was bagging out Rohan in particular. Because the Cats need goal scorers, and that is exactly what these guys are there for, and what they are doing.

The one reason I'm still reserved on the Cats though is the young guys.. There are a number of first year guys in this team. And I want to see how they go under high pressure games before I make my call on if the Cats are premiership material yet.. because in finals, games are pressure cookers and young guys tend to disappear in these conditions... I think that Richmond game in round 12 will be the one for me. You do it against them, and I'm in. A few other games in the lead up to that too.. GWS & West Coast will be the ones you will be tested most.

Clarke is the only real first year player. It’s Atkins first season but he’s 24 and won 2 VFL B&F’s. The other three have done their second pre-season.

There is also Touhy, Guthrie, Bews, S.Selwood, Henry, Cockatoo and Fogarty.

That's not great reasoning though to value Geelong currently. Let's say that they lose to both Richmond and WCE under intense pressure, but then win all of their other games and are 15-2. I'd argue that's a damn good side. You can only play who you're matched up against and currently Geelong are flying. Beat Pies and Crows away, and clobbered Dees at home, all while fielding a bunch of recruits and youngsters. The one thing you can't take away is the confidence that they would take from these three wins, similar to Richmond in 2017 where we started 5-0.

I am not sold on Geelong. Their first three games I feel like all the oppostion teams, whilst all of them being touted as top 8 heavyweights.... all performed like rubbish. Collingwood played like garbage against Geelong in round 1, Melbourne was putrid and Adelaide was awful tonight.... I want to see how Geelong goes when a team plays good against them. I almost feel like they haven't done a lot to earn these 3 wins. Just turn up and play standard football and let the opposition make all the mistakes.

I feel like they are top 4 locks.

Yep could see it coming. If crouch got paid that Mark and kicked it things could have turned out different tho. But I said to my house mate this is the exact scenario where teams need to hit the front or they have spent all their tickets to get back into the game and the other team kicks away again, and that's exactly what happened.

Spot on. It was Round 1, Dogs v Swans to a tee. Furious comeback from nowhere by the Swans, Franklin gets an easy shot late to put Sydney in front, makes a hash of it, Bontempelli with a steadier and then a couple of junk time goals to seal it. If Franklin had goaled, I would have put the house on the Dogs not recovering from that.

As an aside, am I correct in thinking - not one deliberate out of bounds all match?

I feel like if we can negotiate the next three games (GWS at home, Hawthorn at the G, West Coast at home) with at least 1 win, that holds us in great stead. If you take the remaining 16 games in four game blocks, it looks very manageable for the Cats.

Still very early days though and we can't be sure if teams like Brisbane and Port are the real deal, or if Melbourne and Essendon are gone. It was an early season match against Essendon last year where no-one gave them a hope, they smashed us and the season hit the skids for the Cats following that game.

Not many people outside fans of these clubs would have thought any of these were going to be premiers after round 3 of their respective premiership years.

The difference, like West Coast last year, is that everyone knew North had to get wins early and that the Roos would find it much harder going in the back half. Perhaps 9-0 was unexpected but I can't remember anyone getting carried away with that.

Geelong's season, on paper, is the complete opposite. A brutal start, where I think a lot of people would have thought we'd be doing extremely well to be 3-3 after six weeks, followed by a favourable run after that. Not an easy run, because you rarely get an easy game these days and Geelong has a habit of losing so-called 'easy' away games in Melbourne in recent years, but it certainly looks manageable.

Of course it’s way too early to be talking ‘premiership material’- not sure why anyone would be that far ahead of themselves at round 3. Anything can happen.
Think it’s fair to say we have played the 3 teams at a good time. They will all improve, but so will Geelong.
Now, just glad to be enjoying the way we are playing.

Thank you cats. #multiintact

Geelong's been the best team in the comp so far. Only 3 rounds in, but we've showed we're the best at this stage.

I don't think we'll win the flag but we've proven early on we're in discussion at least.

I think it is hard to disagree. Just need to hit the finals in red hot form and it all becomes possible. It is early, but all of the other teams would like to be in the same exact position as Geelong right now.

Yeah, there are a lot of best 22 players not out there. I hope we keep the hardness once they come back.

Of course it couldn't be because Geelong haven't allowed Collingwood, Melbourne and Adelaide to play the game on their terms, could it?

So being a player down, playing interstate on a warm and humid night after a 5 day break and having the home side come back from 23 points down at half time to 2 points down early in the last quarter isn't intense pressure? If that isn't intense pressure, what is?

Yeah, I mean 3-0 is what it is. And Collingwood/Melbourne/Adelaide are all quality opposition. By rights Geelong should hammer the lower end teams. But I still want to see how they go against teams that go hard at it against them. Looking at the fixture, they should finish top 4. They don't play Collingwood again, Richmond once, Port once, GWS once and West Coast once. Strange they still only play Collingwood once... Would have thought the AFL would have penciled that one in as a double..

Yeah you can play the return game st Geelong.

It’s weird I didnt think much of Collingwood. Three kids on debut O’Connor Ratta a handful of games plus Rohan and Dahlhaus. Still gelled and controlled the game.
