Review Good/Bad vs Geelong

Why did we bomb into Stewart? It's absolutely because of the limited skills of the midfield especially when under pressure. They either pass it to someone else under pressure who has to hack it or they hack it themselves.
It wasn't just Stewart though, I think we must of trained to aim for nappy haired tall blonde guys because we kept picking them out over and over and over again all game long.

It was so repetetive that we must have meant to be doing it.

A one goal loss and a three goal loss. And yet somehow this is the most depressing start to a season I can remember.

Au revoir Brodie Smith you were once a terrific footballer.

Murphy gotta be dropped.

We need a rule at selection that says only one of Crouch and Berry in the team. It just doesn't work.
Unfortunately if those 3 guys go then the cupboard is bare.

You'd have to be getting games into Curtin, Edwards, Taylor, those guys.

I mean, that's just crazy.

Not as awful as Murphy. But there's no doubt the crouch, Laird, Berry filled midfield is asking for max damage incurred. But Murphy, at 100 games, should go first, he's fully developed and there's nothing redeeming there. Except his hustle, gotta love that hustle.
Did it even help though? I saw him do a few 100m chases down the wing, lots of effort... kinda didn't prove anything.
Then on the rebound saw him miss tex with a 20m lead towards the 50m arc. Like... cmon.

Bad watching Young and Serong being absolutely elite at Freo while our pick 6 has already retired because they had a pea heart and never wanted to be an elite athlete.

Watching Jones run around like headless chook with no confidence while Butters is in Brownlow contention.

How have we been unable to identify elite midfield talent for a decade?? It's embarrassing

Is it?

Our forward line was nothing really special in 2021 / 2022.

I would wager that our great 2023 was more of a product of Tex having a career best year and the injection of Rankine.
But wrren't we no 1 in the league for scores per forward 50 entry last year..that is not just luck and one player in fine form

Well, we played Rachele and Soligo in there for the first 8 weeks last year in their 2nd year and totally cooked them for the entire season.......

Midfield rotations
Crouch Dawson Pedlar Rachele Rankine Curtin
I'd love to see that :thumbsu:.
If we were losing with that midfield rotation I'd have some hope for the future because the latter 4 will improve.

But it's going to be The Old Firm of Laird, Crouch, Dawson and SLOANE, asap, and we'll keep losing without hope of improvement.

The others will be given a few minutes now and then. Their time will come, hopefully with our next Head Coach, IF they stick around.

But wrren't we no 1 in the league for scores per forward 50 entry last year..that is not just luck and one player in fine form

I am pretty sure it is.

In 2022 we averaged 11.3 goals a game. In 2023 that jumped to 13.9 goals which is a difference of 2.6 goals a game.

In 2022 we had Rowe as a small forward (12 goals) and much to old mate Bick's dismay - swapped him with Rankine who kicked 36 goals. There is a goal a game right there. Add in Tex's freakish season kicking a further 29 goals in 2023 compared to 2022 and there you have found 2.3 goals per game.

We also had the healthiest forward line of 8 players - Walker, FOG, TT, Rankine, Rachele, Keays, Murphy, Pedlar all play 21 games+ (except Rankine who played 20).

What? You honestly think Rachele could have played a majority of his 2nd year in the midfield? He always had to build up his tank to play there so it's not surprise he didn't play there as the season progress. At least he did show he can transition into the midfield where even Southerntakeover made a statement that "Collingwood would have fun with Rachele" and then he re-sign a 7 years extension.

I think the thing people get upset about is we didn't get maximum development for young players during our losing and rebuild years.

Sure there's a balance but we definitely lent into the experienced players in the crucial areas more.

There are key players that should have 20 more games under their belt and that would have made zero difference to our result but advanced our future. Instead we carry a heavy development debt still.

Not getting enough attention, better ramp up the stupid.
