Autopsy Round 24, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Sydney

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Pros
  • Shanahan
  • Grego getting his debut
  • Flynn’s acceptance of having his kicking licence revoked.
  • Chesser.
  • 36,000+ turning up for a dead rubber when we’ve won the spoon 5 times over comparative to our next placed rival. Respect to everyone else who turned up.
Negs
  • Folding like a house of cards second half
  • Mini coaching from the bench. It doesn’t achieve anything.
  • Mini not having any plan b

Thank **** that season is over lads.

Tonight’s game basically sums up the season:

  • Plenty to like from the youth
  • Competitive and up for the fight for a half
  • Capitulation and ultimately ending in major disappointment

Been a rough year. Thank **** it’s over. 1 win. This is as bad as it’s going to get. There’s only one way up from here. I’m excited for the future for this crop though.
we could get zero wins next year but improve.

what if we're winless but just haven't learnt to win and lose every game by 1-20 points

Would be a big improvement but suck

Negative - The second half

Positives- The first half, It's finally f*cking Joever and Jobe Shanahan is so f*cking good. Our best draftee besides number 9 in years. Ginbey and Hewett didn't show the kind of promise in their first season or two that Jobe has.

It's all over, Finally!
The frustration, the disappointment, the angst, and the melts, finished!
We've been able to see who are going to be solid players and who are depth.
Let's hope we get the top-up right and really embed this game plan with some bloody skills and a healthy dose of footy brains!
Bring on the finals, the trade and preseason!

My season +/-

Major +s

  • Harley = star
  • Hewey = ecstatic he got a clean run at it. He was up and down but when on really impacted games. Huge 26 for him.
  • Shanahan = love him
  • Tmac = great pick up and shows new tricks every week or two.
  • Ginbey - destined to retire with a wardrobe full of AA blazers. A stud and imo our seasons mvps
  • Hedwards - he grew into the season magnificently. Whatever he lacks in physical gifts he makes up with his sheer competitiveness. Big fan.

+s
  • Archer Reid = I think he’s a great prospect, harshly critiqued on here imo. Looking forward to year 3
  • Chesser = wow his speed is eye catching . Really changed his fortunes in the last month
  • Liam baker - despite the cost it’s hard not to love what he brings. Great addition.
  • Jack graham - better then I expected
  • Hough - I liked some of his moments in the midfield. Curious to see how this play outs but adding some strings to his bow is only a positive.
  • mini = I like him. Tough hand dealt to him this year. Let’s see what 26 brings
  • Sandy brock- I like him, he can be a reliable contributor at the level imo and looks good when he starts dashing up the field.
  • Maric happy with his progress seems to be getting a feel for the level now.

Neither here nor there

  • hall, gross, Davis, Greggo etc am happy we pumped some games into them. Not judging them too much atm, hopefully big preseasons ahead.
  • bo just a bad luck season. But I reckon he makes it, he isn’t lacking footy iq and has some tools that translate to afl level big time
  • brockman has moments but he is invisible for such large periods. Think 26 looks big for his future In AFL, still not convinced, but i want to be.
  • jwill looks like gold sometimes but he clearly faded out from a poor preseason. I think he needs to work harder if he wants to make it the top level. Like him tho.
  • Dewar started season well but has left a lot of questions for me. Needs to work harder defensively and would like to see better composure next year.
  • Hutch another one harshly criticised on here . I get he fumbles too much but i reckon there’s something there and get why the club committing to him. Wouldn’t be surprised if he looks twice the player next year
  • Long, like so many I loved his first year but I can’t help and wonder if expectations were so low from a pretty uninspiring group of youth at that time and his low pick. I’m happy he had a healthy year but like a few others next year is looming large. I’m hopeful he makes it, but not confident.

-s

  • Flynn can mark it but is a totally liability everywhere else
  • bwill id be happy to trade away
  • Liam Ryan I love. But he has my blessing to leave
  • TK can play. But he isn’t the senior mid we need in such a dire situation. Would be so much better for us with a yeo and or another senior mid taking some of the heat. I’m fine with him sticking around for two years
  • Cripps didn’t have a bad season but I would have preferred he call it quits and we move onto the succession plan asap
  • Duggan I think is a good leader but his dump kicking is just so frustrating. I still think there’s a place for him in the team, but without the captains armband
  • owies sucks
  • Allen such a messy season . I always liked oz but him leaving seems like a no brainer for player and club.
  • Bazzo I’m worried about , seems to be in no mansland often and is a terrible decision maker from back. Would want a much better 26.

I would say he did develop a plan b. We started off as a move the ball forward at all cost probably until the Port away game where we started to play a lot more chip and mark game.

It’s the plan c of stopping the avalanches and getting absolutely belted in the middle. That has to come over the next 7 weeks at trade period and then the draft.

We can match teams for 2 or 3 Quarters so hopefully we can improve enough to at least play a few 4 quarter games out in 2026 ..
Congratulations to all the new debutant players this year, you now know what’s required for next year ..

In terms of the sheer variety of ways this year sucked ass, yeah this has truly been one for the ages.

From the Yeo injury in preseason right through to Ryan's last kick getting touched on the line after the siren, it was truly astonishing how consistently and regularly anything that could possibly go wrong went wrong in the worst possible way at the worst possible moment, week in, week out.

I think McQualter is a good coach and the list has actually started to move in the right direction after years of stagnating or going backwards, but **** me dead. You could follow a sports team for your entire life and not experience a year as thoroughly grim as this one.

So many likes, you are so witty🤣, no1 Simmo fan boi, shine on you crazy diamond………..weak as piss as always!

Have hit the bottle again I see.

Speaking of wit, I would use the term halfwit to describe your offerings but that would be overly generous. A harsher person would use another descriptor ending in wit, but we shan’t go there 🤣

+ the kids, almost all of them have AFL traits and we have the core of a decent side and many are exciting.

- we have 5 or 6 players running around tonight who will not make it as long term AFL players or are depth at best.

All hail Jobe, our lab grown King. For we must turn to the lab, lest the draft letteth us down.

May the wealth of the Westeth Coast rain down riches of goals most kicked, not through only riches but through fortune...for our lab grown King doth slippeth to pick 30.

Onwardis and Upwardis. Spirit of Santa. Amen.

I'll have a stab:

1: Clayton Hall
2: C Hall
3: Clay
4: Hallsy
5: Rawlinson
6: Hall

Good first half. Intensity dropped away in the third quarter. Skill errors crept in again. Disappointing end to the season.

I look forward to Jobe's first Pfeiffer next season.

Don't be so hard on him!!
He had plenty of friends tonight and wasn't the worst.

Hall is a depth midfielder longer term.
Long needs to improve.
Brockman needs to improve.
Dewar needs to improve.
BW if we find a decent ruck is in trouble.
Bazzo has tried his guts out this year but I think he is depth.

I do worry for Hall. He has improved as the season has gone on but he won't make it as a mid based on his speed. Hopefully Mini looks at a secondary position for him to give him a chance.

I think he's fine for what he is. Tank needs to some serious work, but I think he looks like a player that will be in and out of the side but can be serviceable.
