The world will and does tolerate totalitarian behaviour…. Have you heard about Gazza?
I'd be more than a little concerned if I were Israel right now. The USA fighting spot fires all over the world is not great for arming Israel.
I've been thinking about this recently. Gough Whitlam wanted to nationalise our resources, keep the money for Australians. This is noble and right. But had he done that, we'd just be strong-armed and potentially invaded by the US anyway.
And Gough got removed for precisely (may never be confirmed) that reason.

Australia needs to keep its head down and be patient. The UK is irrelevant now and soon the USA will collapse economically as well. When this happens Australia can rethink its sovereignty with a little more freedom as the USA will be a lot more restricted in how they can exert economic and military power.
I’ve always wondered also how Norway has gotten away with it …
I suppose they way the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund invests back into the worlds economies is one way.
Norway never gave anything up in the first place.

Australia, like the UK, took the short term sugar hit instead of maintaining their sovereignty. Having said that Australia has always been either a colony of the UK or a vassal state of the USA - not sure we have ever had that much sovereignty.

Anyone who thinks Trump is behind taking over Venezuela needs their head read. This has been on the cards for over a decade.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they told trump after they done it.

The Maduros were snatched up faster than a 14 year old girl at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump was obviously in the loop on that one.

Why would they flood the market with oil and crash the price?

By “they” you mean the oil companies?

Oil from different sources has different costs to extract and refine. And has different capital amortization schedules.

So even with a low sell price, a low cost source may still be making heaps of profit.

Oil has been 25% cheaper than it is today and the oil companies have continued to pump it.

Maduro made a big mistake relying on the Russians / Chinese for air defense

I'm not sure they had any other options?
Long running embargo meant they have no access to Western tech.

Trump is just your run of the mill sleazy rapist pedo billionaire. He can only see of the world through what he can take.

He’s been elevated by the corporate oligarchs who are desperate for outright and unapologetic imperialism. They know they don’t have long left.

The Americans who voted for him are collectively responsible for what this regime is inflicting on people. Whatever happens to them, no sympathy is coming from me.

If he takes Greenland. USA will no longer exist.

Since he has verbalised his plan, I think he will be unalived in the very near future. I also think he will not be alone in being unalived.
The world wont tolerate this totalitarian behavour.
How many times have people decalared that "this will be the end of Trump." Not even the Epstein files are going to bring him down. Too many keys to power like him being at the top and the rest are too afraid of him to go against him.

Who's going to stop him? Both Albo and Starmer have already let Venezuala slide. This has only reinforced that US military hegemony is as strong as it has ever been.

I think when Trump tells us his plans we should believe him. If he goes for Greenland western leaders will offer some mild handwringing and Denmark will stamp their feet but ultimately no one will be able to stop them.

Yes oil companies. They don't really care if Trump wants to 'drill baby drill' if it's not going to make money for them.

What they made money from in the past =/= what they'll make money from today or tomorrow either. Plus, if they know they can sell it at current prices why cut their margins?

Supply and Demand is far too simplistic.

. If someone took over australia, turned it into a hard right christian white ethnic dictatorship that rounded up minorities and put them into concentration camps, would you say it was wrong for another country to kidnap the leader?
Yes

I genuinely wonder what happens if the US invades Greenland, as Trump reiterated today how much he wants it.

Obviously Europe can do **** all to defend it, but if the US invades does the EU submit a strongly worded letter, or do they put in real sanctions, and if they do put in sanctions how effective could they be?

I heard that the Dutch have a company that is crucial for making computer chips, that if the US did not have access to they would not really be able to make good computer chips. That is just one company I can think of.

In saying that though I think Europe is pretty dependent on the US for energy needs, which makes things harder. Canada is still years away from being able to supply most of Europe.

He got elected. That kept him out of prison. It would have been the easiest thing in the world for him to kick back and do SFA and spend his days playing golf? And yet he hasn’t?

You really think he’d prefer the Ukraine war to continue?
I don't think he gives a shit. A strong man leader using force to take over another country, killing hundreds of thousands isnt moving the needle for Trump.

He wants a Nobel Peace Prize like Obama got.

That's the only reason I think any of it registers for him. The loss of life isn't of any interest to someone like that.

That and the grift.

Everything about Trump comes down to self-interest IMO.

Venezuelan oil isn't cheap. US oil companies are slashing production in the US where they already have infrastructure. Trump understands oil the way he understands anything else, and since he sorrounded himself with goons and sycophants, there are no functioning adults at the wheel.

He is a malignant narcissist, who also has ftd.

He is an angry amoral man.

There will be lots of condemnation. NATO will continue to fall apart. Western nations will quietly distance themselves more and more from the US as much as they can and start putting more money into their own defence.

Australia will basically shake our heads and do nothing hoping that whoever succeeds Trump can untangle this mess.

It is an insane situation as who would have guessed even 2 years ago there would be a chance that the US would invade Greenland.

I think there would be A LOT of cancelled F-35 orders if the US invades Greenland too.

Maybe someone should suggest awarding Trump a Nobel Peace Prize, FIFA style, with a view to appealing to Trump's monolithic ego of wanting a legacy as a peacemaker, in the hope that it helps stop him invading countries.

Then when Trump loses power or dies, retroactively withdraw his award and if he did actually stop invading territories, then award it to the person who implemented this idea.

Its less about Greenland atm and more about Columbia - who he says is 'sick'. And the Far Right fighters in Columbia groups who have been seeking shelter in Venezuala and who will be jumping all over this like a tick on a bull.

Good luck in the South Americans jungles fellas.

I wonder if deep down Trump knows he is not that bright or if he is so deluded he genuinely thinks he is always the smartest man in the room.

Also I think we see when he is against a small weak nation that he thinks he can bully Trump uses far tougher language and actions than he does worse nations that are in theory stronger (Russia and China). I think the odds of Trump defending Taiwan if they are attacked by China is almost 0 because Trump is scared of China.

He is like a 12 year old bully, happy to beat up 5 year olds, but won't touch kids who are 10 or older.

Greenland is very much on the table though as Trump said this only today

“We absolutely need Greenland,” Donald Trump said in a telephone interview with the American magazine The Atlantic. He went on to describe the island—part of Denmark, a NATO ally – as “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.”

and the wife of Stephen Miller posted this yesterday too

It’s why he rates despots but seems to loathe liberals. He’s one of them.

And once he’s gone, there’s quite a few who’ll want to carry this on.

It’s amazing. One guy who missed by 5 inches, and a few thousands in the Midwest who bought into racist pet eating hysteria, and the world will be apportioned out by different despots.

What are the odds that Trump floated among his sycophants “why can’t I be president of Venezuela?”
