2011 crowds

Richmond currently fourth highest drawing club in the competition. (Only behind Carlton, Collingwood & Essendon).

Avg. 46,000 a game and that includes playing both NM & BL in the last two weeks.

Granted Hawthorn have played one game less, but it's still a strong 48,000 difference between both clubs. Which they won't cover with this weeks game against Port (In Adelaide).

Next week will be a very low drawing round with no big games and four low drawing games.

PA vs Haw (AAMI) - 18k
WBD vs Syd (MO) - 12k
Geel vs NM (SS) - 24k
Rich vs Frem (MCG) - 30k
GC vs BL (G) - 30k
Melb vs Adel (MCG) - 22k
Ess vs WCE (ES) - 38k
St K vs Carl (ES) - 42k
Total - 216k
Average - 27k

Pretty spot on with those estimates.

Maybe the Essendon and Richmond games will get a few k more.

And without premierships and consistently in the top half of the ladder.

In terms of League wide attendence, West Coast is the last team you want to be performing well. There is about a 5,000 difference between West Coast winning the flag and West Coast winning the Spoon.

Conscious of the stadium issues, but some of your crowds last year were dropping to 28-30K from memory. TV ratings wise also a huge boost.

No doubt. Oddly enough though, not the worst attended game of the round - that 'honour' went to the Rabbitohs/Sharks match (100-odd fewer than Storm/Knights).

Quite a contrast to the Swans who pulled 28,000 in appalling weather.

Storm have a new stadium, just had their biggest crowd of the year thanks for to the ANZAC game deal, are near the top of the NRL. On a really good night weather wise.

On top of the recent poor TV ratings for a live game into Melbourne they'll be scratching their heads at News Ltd.

On a night when it pissed down with rain at some shit stadium, not that bad considering

What excuse do the Storm have other than losing the week before?

What excuse do the Storm have other than losing the week before?

No excuse - they deserve a bigger crowd.

But possible contributing factors include:
- concurrent Tigers/Lions match
- four day gap since the last home game
- rugby league/union saturation in Melbourne at the moment with a high number of Storm/Rebels home games in this part of the year (different sports I know, but they have an overlapping supporter base).

Still, 9000 is a massive crowd compared to the 4-5k Victory get to their ACL games...

But Victory are getting smashed, Storm are supposed to be premiership favourites

9000 is very poor given that the excuses used to be the crap stadium

But for Home and Away matches Victory still pull bigger crowds then Storm do with the highest always around 32,000 most seasons.

If Richmond pull a win v Freo could see big Crowds v Doggies and possibly 80,000 v Essendon

Of course playing in Tasmania as well as 2 interstate visits (3/6 games isn't a burden )

Adelaide - 42,536 (Satuday Night) Adelaide
Melbourne - 49,905 (Sunday Twilight) MCG
Richmond - 46,635 (Saturday Night) MCG
West Coast - 15,063 (Saturday) Tasmania
Geelong - 78,579 (Tuesday Public Holiday) MCG
Port Adelaide - 21,819 (Friday Night) Adelaide
Average: 42,378

Now compare that to Richmond

Carlton - 60,654 (Season Opener) MCG
St Kilda - 41,465 (Friday Night) MCG
Hawthorn - 46,635 (Saturday Night) MCG
Collingwood - 58,050 (Friday Night) MCG
North Melbourne - 36,641 (Easter Sunday Night) Ethiad
Brisbane - 37,435 (Saturday Night) MCG
Fremantle - 34,090 (Satuday Twilight) MCG
Average: 44,935

That's 7/7 games in Melbourne, 6 at the MCG, 4 against the largest 6 drawing Melbourne clubs, 2 Friday Night games, 2 Saturday Night games, the Season Opener fixture need I go on?

Richmond should be in the top 2 drawing clubs in the competition at the moment given the above line up of games.

That is an incredible draw from a marketing point of view, look at the first 4 games.

I have to say that yes the figures would be better somewhat if there was a collingwood home game in there, but I think it's a but rough saying the Suns home game was a reason the attendance was low - it drew a bigger crows than Melbourne v Adelaide, Geelong v North, Bulldogs v Sydney and Port v Hawks games..

crowds undoubtably a bit soft so far (even ignoring average crowd, and looking at aggregate).. said before and I'll say again: its not surprising given the negative noise about the sub rule at the start of the year, the introduction of GC with no 'away' followers, the poor run of Brisbane and Port knocking 5-10 off their crowds..

But for all that, the season is really shapping up as a fascinating one, and the next 5-6 rounds are just crackers! I think by year end we'll have a pretty decent set of numbers all round.

Attendances have been a bit soft so far for a variety of reasons but I think they will firm up and recover as the season matures.

Collingwood are firmly entrenched in the top 4 and Carlton are comfortably top 8. As with last year both will continue to draw heavily.

More importantly for increasing attendances vis a vis last season we have both Essendon and Richmond showing signs of life. Richmond have a couple of out of town homers but if both clubs continue to show signs of finalling both will average huge numbers in Melbourne during the rest of the season. This will pump crowds a lot unless either or both blow up.

Round 7 was always going to be a low drawing round with all crowds very close to expectation.

In terms of average attendance the Gold Coast was alway going to drag the average down. Looking at the average attendance excluding the Gold Coast

2011
Total: 1,874,138
Games: 50
Average: 37,483

2010
Total: 2,213,088
Games: 56
Average: 39,519

Still down significantly (-5.2%) but looking over the next 3 weeks I expect the 2011 crowds be larger than 2010 crowds.

2010
Rd 8: 245,627
Rd 9: 332,530
Rd 10: 251,534

Total: 3,042,779
Games: 80
Average: 38,035

2011
Rd 8: 316,000
Rd 9: 312,000
Rd 10: 242,000 (7 games)

Total: 2,744,138
Games: 73
Average: 37,591

Dont think you can blame the Suns game, it only drew 2,000 less than the GABBA match in rd7 2010

Lost 50,000 from not having Collingwood playing, St Kilda v Carlton and Geelong home games were down by a couple of thousand each on the corresponding game last year in rd 7.

Manuka and Melbourne are the biggest problems, Bulldogs played in front of 45,000 in rd7 last year against Melbourne whilst this year they played 2 seperate games and drew 15,000 less despite being 2 seperate games

I understand your point of view but a few points.

- Hawthorn and their supporters have chosen to take full responsibility for the Tasmanian home games, you should too.

- Hawthorn's form has been considerably better than Richmond's (as has their last 30 years), the true strength of Richmond's attendances are the last 3 weeks, 38k against Brisbane, 36k against North Melbourne, 34k against Fremantle, all in Melbourne. Hawthorn could not do that *they could against North*, that's why they play these games in Tasmania. It's a brilliant move, but they can't do what Richmond can.

Crowds are fine. 7 game rounds, QLD sides, some smaller venues.

The big 6 Vic clubs are shaping up and the two WA clubs will more than keep crowds at a good level.

Collingwood
Essendon
Carlton
Hawthorn
Richmond
Geelong

Are yet to play each other much.

Assess at seasons end.

Hawthorn have bettered that against Brisbane (2007 - 39,007) and haven't played Fremantle in Melbourne since 2001 thanks to Tasmania (although we did draw 40k to Dunstall's farewell game) but will in 3 weeks time.

Good guess though

When you made that comparison (last week) Hawthorn had actually drawn more people per average to a game then Richmond (with one Tasmanian game included)

Carlton top 4, Essendon top 8 and Richmond showing signs of life will likely have an impact on crowds in the second half of the year, will make little difference up to the end of round 7 one would have thought.
