It's bullshit that teams who played GC only once last year don't get to play GWS twice this year.

They're 99% guaranteed wins. And i have no doubt some clubs who played the Suns twice last year have GWS twice this year. That simply isn't fair whatsoever.

Has any club drawn GC twice last year and GWS twice this year?

melbourne do...
whilst richmond dont, a club that could use it too...

the MFC are the afls pet, they are the club that wants to be collingwood, so they kiss the backside of the afl, where as collingwood, are the hot 18 ear old student who the teacher cant say no to... (not reffering to the fixture for collingwood here, just in general getting their way)

Yup. Crows played them twice this year and yet they get GWS and GC twice next year.

After getting roally bent over in the 2011 Draw, North Melbourne deserved to get a good fixture for 2012.

Interesting that the AFL declared that ALL Vic clubs would travel 5 times for interstate away games, but the Hawks only have 3?

Also interesting that yet again, Pies travel is clustered at the end of the year including a trip to Perth in penultimate round, again.

Happy we play the best sides repeatedly, not happy travel is clustered late in the year again.

Melbourne i think. Not that I am complaining, we get GWS and GC twice next year. I think GC will be a better side, more competitive, but don't think they will be massively better in terms of winning a lot more games.

And Carlton v Geelong at Etihad again. And it's a friday night...why not just give us the G and bum off a boring match to Etihad..

FFS when will they learn. Took them 4 years to get us and the Hawks at the G...

Fixturing a team home games at their home ground, when will they learn!

The serious part: of course you can discount them. They are Hawthorn home games played exactly where Hawthorn requested them to be played. They should have no bearing on where their away games are fixtured.

The way i look at it, Hawthorn got paid to play games interstate (Tassie) and in return, the AFL gave us less other interstate games, as well as a bunch of shit home games that will make us very little money at all. Of our 11 home games (including Tassie games) we play only 3 Victorian teams. That is our trade off. We make money by playing less non-Tassie interstate matches, and in return get less money by playing interstate teams in Melbourne, instead of getting home games against Carlton, Essendon, etc.

Last year we didn't get home games against Collingwood, Carlton or Richmond, this year we don't get home games against Essendon, Carlton, Richmond, Melbourne or Saint Kilda. The fact that this draw gives us very little chance to make money means we should get some other allowances, such as traveling less.

Thumbs down.

Too much sense and overuse of the word clustered.

That's just disgraceful. That is the BIGGEST inequity in the entire fixture.

Adelaide has 4 wins in the bag.

If they don't make finals they're a joke.

Not only that - they obviously get port twice - so that's the bottom 3 sides twice

Why do Geelong only play 9 games against top 8 sides?

In 2011, they only played 10 against the top 8 sides from the previous year.

2011
Col x 2
Haw x 2
St K x 2
Syd x 2
WC x 1 (in Perth)
Car x 1
Ess x 1

That was an easy run against the other seven teams in the top eight, was it? Would another game against Essendon, plus West Coast in Geelong made our fixture much more difficult? And it's ten games against top eight sides this year.

Why do the Blues play the Demons at the MCG as a home game, and the Saints at Etihad. Surely the venues should be swapped to at least give some semblance of a home ground advantage.

Quite odds the Blues home games are played at venues that are the predominant home ground of their opposition....

Not only that, we also play Essendon away at the G and St. Kilda twice both at the G. We play Docklands twice, one away against North and one home against Freo.

Pretty good draw from our perspective. We have a very rough patch of games from about R6-11 (Geelong, Haw, Syd away, Carl, Ess, Coll) but have a very good run home after the break (GWS & Dockers twice, Suns & Crows at home, Bris away Rich, NM & Saints). Only complaints really would be playing in Geelong again (every year) and travelling in the last round again, this time to WA. But until we lift our game and expect to make finals we can't really complain.

Also from a $$$ perspective it's a pretty rough draw. The only games we could budget to make a healthy payday from would be Queens Bday, Friday night against Hawks and the Richmond game (as well as the Darwin game). We have 5 home games in Melbourne against interstate sides (GWS, Suns, Crows, Freo & Bris) as well as the Darwin game against Port. However as these teams are for the most part likely to finish bottom 8 you can't complain too much.

Would like to see some more return games against Vic teams though, our only ones are Richmond & St. Kilda. With Coll, Carl, Ess, Rich, Haw & Geel all for the most part playing each other twice year in year out it's becoming a league of two divisions. They need to quickly address this otherwise it will get boring very quickly with only 5 return games now (instead of 7). A rolling draw needs to be implemented sooner rather than later.

In 2011, they only played 10 against the top 8 sides from the previous year.

Mis-read it the first time, but this is still wrong.

Collingwood x 2
St Kilda x 2
Western Bulldogs x 1
Sydney x 2
Fremantle x 1
Hawthorn x 2
Carlton x 1

Eleven games against the other top eight teams and away games against both interstate top eight sides. What a dream run. Of course, if we'd had a home game against Freo and another game against the Bulldogs this year, we would have been found out for sure. So yeah, you're wrong with your analysis of our fixture this year and next year. Keep up the good work.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but just noticed – Collingwood & Essendon – 4 day breaks pre Anzac Day! Has that ever happened before? I always thought if it was a Wednesday they gave one side the previous Friday and threw in a Thursday night fixture for the other side? Or am I dreaming?

Second half of that game could be the lowest intensity AFL footy played for a long time.

Seriously strange given it’s a bit of a showcase… would have thought they’d make it part of the round from the weekend prior, and then do a 4 day break to a Sunday game.

after reading all of this, its just.... weird.

the afl need to make it a draw, not a fixture, to take all unevenness out of it, then its purely luck who you play, nobody can whinge, and you draw who you draw, making sure that you play everyone once, and that you have 11 home games.

back to back road trips also need to be abolished.

Re: Draw Difficulty

At a glance, it looks like there could be a bit of change in the top four, considering the discrepancy in difficulty of opposition. Maybe the first year in a while where there have been some genuine upsets in the early weeks of finals, with teams in 5-8 making it through to the preliminary finals, because in reality, they're better teams than the ones above them, but have just had much more difficult fixtures.

Exactly. I would be pretty pissed off if (hypothetically) Nth finished a game ahead of us on the ladder and we had to travel to Freo and play an elimination final.....while they got a home game. What a crock.

Nth Start the season in theory +6 wins. Hawks play WC/Pies/Geelong twice -6 potentially. F.......me.......how is that fair.

I looked at the draw for Adelaide in 2011 and thought the same thing.

After beating Hawks in Round 1, I noticed they had Port, GC and Lions twice and figured they had 6 wins right there, and I put a stack of cash on them to make the 8.

I won't make the same mistake again, no matter how good their draw looks on paper!

2007.
Both played on the Saturday.

Essendon have to play Carlton before Anzac Day.
Collingwood get Port in Melbourne.
Ouch.
