Four out of ten flights booked for interstate games. Two Melbourne games and the SA, WA, NT and TAS games to go!

Probably get the Melbourne games and the SA game out of my next pay...then I can organise with the family how to do the other three (family holidays, fun fun fun).

Wow.

I'm impressed.

I'm earning a bit more spare cash these days and want to go on an interstate trip but my uni holidays are at different times to everyone else's and the only one that I know will be during my uni holidays is unfortunately Geelong @ Kardinia Park. If Vic Lions fans can't get tickets, what chance would I have? Also not knowing what is the exact date to that game either. If it wasn't for uni restrictions, the interstate game I want to go to is the Richmond @ MCG. However it is likely that Essendon @ Etihad is during my uni break so I may have to wait and see.

The missus and I went down to Melbourne 2 years ago for a holiday, we happened to be playing Geelong @ Skilled, so I wanted to head out there and watch. We didn't book tickets but just got GA at the gate and walked in. We were sitting in the "standing area" which was a giant aluminum stand but we could sit wherever we wanted because we got there early. All the Geelong fans were nice as well even though we had heard from a Brisbane based Cats supporter that they were feral. Wasn't the best result for the Lions either going down to the Cats by 63 points. Skilled is a really good venue to watch the footy at as well, very open so take some sunscreen and a something to do on the train ride out there. I was lucky enough that the wife fell asleep on the train ride home and I was speaking to a nice couple about all things AFL, one was a Cats supporter the other a Freo supporter. You don't get those kind of conversations with people in Brisbane so it was refreshing!

Going down to Melb for at least the first match. Noticed today that Jetstar have $69 flights (one way) from Bris to Melb for a short period of time - May 1st until June something.

EDIT: can anyone recommend any accommodation near Etihad in Melb?

Spreading the opening round or 2 over like 4 weeks would suck, unless they get the broadcasters to show every game on FTA TV. If they did 1 game in each time slot, 1 Friday night, 1 sat arvo, 1 sat night, 1 sun arvo and the same the next week, that means no conflicts with having 2 games on at the same time. Having full coverage of the opening round or two would be a good way to start the season. It means every team is accessable to everyone in the opening round, and only have 1 game on in each slot should help maximise crowds and tv ratings.

I saw a similar article to the Courier-Mail one in The Australian today, however I found it a little disturbing to be honest.

Here is the quote from Demitriou that I was concerned with:

Demetriou believes those issues aren't insurmountable, with options such as this year's staggered opening round, over two weekends, a possible problem-solver.
"We are not averse to staggering the start of the season," he said.
"You could think laterally about having three or four games to open the season where we might not use cricket grounds. We've got Metricon (Stadium) available. We could play games away from the Gabba if we had to."

Lions home games at Metricon is what I am reading.

I don't think think he is saying that, considering this other quote from the Courier Mail Article.

Demetriou also defended the decision to stage the NAB Cup grand final between Brisbane and Carlton at Etihad Stadium and claimed greater gate taking was not the incentive despite claims to the contrary made by AFL staffers.

"We felt that the Brisbane Lions deserved a home final and their home ground is the Gabba," he said.

"We did not think their support would have translated to the GC Suns football ground.

"There is going to be a rivalry between the Suns and Lions and if we try and trick up this ground and pretend it is the Brisbane Lions game for a grand final I don't think it would have had the same effect."

Would also be a breach of contractual arrangements with the Gabba to play Lions home games away from the Gabba.

Yeah i don't think he means that either, as much as i don't trust him, i don't think that was his point. If we started the season playing at Metricon, we could easily still play another away game the following week if the Gabba still isn't available and the start the season even earlier.
