Eh, I'm just venting right now. I understand that he wanted to leave and I know we're set up to compete for a long time yet.

It just cuts me that we've let a deadset gun go to our rival just as he's hitting his prime and unless we strike gold in the draft, we haven't addressed our most immediate need which is for outside pace and delivery.

I'm willing to see the argument that Mitchell was somewhat expendable but it's a shame we couldn't use him to get better right away.

We've given away one of the best ball winners in the competition for a couple of picks.

Unless we can somehow draft another Mills who comes in and is a star in year 1 - not bloody likely at 14 - our list will be worse next year than it was in 2016.

Not sure how that can be argued to be honest.

Pretty easy we didn't give him away he left for more money. He has always been about money which is perfectly understandable. For a couple of picks alternate was he went through PSD. Maybe if nominated Richmond and we got pick 6 it would be different? But he didn't and the Swans tend to assist a players wishes (not all clubs).

Mitchell was the 4/5 best midfielder in the team. I'd rather money spent on retaining Heeney/Mills. No player is irreplaceable and the Swans showed that this year with turnover of players from 2015.

It's pretty clear we've backed our existing list in this trade period and for good reason. Guys like Papley Aliir Marsh XR Naismith Jones Hewett etc were originally just fill-ins but are now best 22, and they actually have the chance to improve next year with the security of knowing they have a role to fill. Young kids can flourish knowing they're spot in the team is relatively assured. Plus with guys like Robinson, Newman, Foote etc pushing for spots. I suspect O'Riordan and Dawson will also come along quite nicely by 2017.

Our only possible weaknesses will be McVeigh (he was horrible this year and will only get older) and Tippett (can't keep using injuries as an excuse). Our other 30 year olds will include Buddy (a freak), Jack (a little bullet) and Grundy (who has guys like Talia waiting in the wings) so even most of our older guys aren't a concern. We're just fine if we follow the same mould set by Horse this year.

Mate I am with you here but as far as Mitchell going to our rival I would not be to worried about Hawthorn being a thorn in our side going forward into the next couple of seasons, even though Mitchell has gone there and we are not improving the list this year through trade the current list with a refresh and rethink of the game plan can see us right there again. It is frustrating but all things aligning next year injuries and the like and further improvement & maturity from the young blokes you can have your young pups and short people out west but I'm confident we can salute. That is my take on it now the disappointment of a couple of weeks ago starts to lessen and the ranting is gone and being rational about the strength of our list comes into it. Having said that its great to make GF's as often as we have in the last 11 years but don't think I could take losing another one !!!!

Points wise:
Pick 14= 1161 (82.93 Birds)
Pick 17= 1025 (73.21 Birds)
Total: 2186 (156.14 Birds)

Pick 3 = 2234 (159.57 Birds)
Pick 4 = 2034 (145.29 Birds)

So trading for pick 4 would not be out of the question.

More interesting, pick 23 is worth 815. A package of pick 17 + pick 23 is worth 1840 points, which is a little more than pick 6 (1751). If we got 23 from Hawks, and GC get 6 from Richmond, we could trade 17+23 for 6 and it's a win for both

Reckon you have to have a dead set target in mind to pursue this policy. Who do you have in mind at pick six?

I'm not necessarily after anyone in particular, because i know nothing about the draftees.

But if I remember swansfan51 's draft analysis, if you want a key forward, they go early.
If you don't draft key forwards, the only way to get them is to pay overs later (Tippett, Buddy, Boyd etc, etc, etc).

If that's what we're after the two highest rated, Marshall and English, are likely to be gone by pick 14. We seem to have an abundance of mids (we can argue about quality, but i'd say we've got more quality than most teams). If we want someone like Marshall or English, we'll need to trade up.

Harley seemed keen to let clubs know we're keen to improve our position. Maybe we have a target in mind already, but given we just got Heeney and Mills, two quality mids in successive drafts, i wouldn't be surprised to see us going after a tall.

Marshall won't go early mark my words. In fact he's looking more and more likely to be a pick 15 ish. You are taking him on potential and not his output. I sort of see him as a similar position to where McCarthy was when he was drafted (was taken at 14)

English- meh, I wouldn't want to get both. We need elite kicks, I'm already having nightmares about overpaying for KPP in a midfield draft. Take the best kicks at 14, 17.?
