We've still got some work to do with Ollie...

I'm fully expecting Wines to go to Melbourne and play with Viney after next year if he believes Melbourne is on a better track than we are.

That's why this whole "cut all our players and build around Wines, Wingard etc" idea is a joke. Next year we have to make sure our trajectory is up so he can see that he's not going to waste his time at a club that is perpetually cycling through draft picks.

waste his time at a club that is perpetually cycling through draft picks.

Isn't that what Melbourne has spent the past decade doing ?

I agree with that, and also would point out that if we are going to make expensive trades we want to hit every one or all we're doing is taking a backwards step. Trading first round draft picks isn't as much of a no-brainer as it may sometimes seem. Even though you may get what you need you are missing out on something and it may very well be just as good if not better than what you've traded for. A drafted player will also be with you for a longer time than a traded player.
Hawthorn's trade for Lake came off but even if it had not they wouldn't have lost a huge amount.

Wines bleeds for this club and his passion is always on display every time we lose it hurts him.
But if we dont get our shit together he will hurt somewhere else

It's a bit of a catch 22. We need to improve our onfield performances yet Ollie's date for the Brownlow was O'Shea.

Pop quiz hotshot, one of your most prolific young talents wants to see the team improve but one of his best mates should be delisted, what do you do? What do you do?!

There's a lot of dickriding about Melbourne's future prospects.

The way I figure it is this - you're walking down the street with your friend. You both spot a locked bag full of money and a $50 note at the same time, but your friend gives you first choice. On one hand you can take the $50, knowing that it's safe to do - finders keepers - and possibly turn it into something special. Or you can take the bag of money, report it and a) have to return it but still get a reward greater than $50 or b) get to keep it.

Brodie is obligated to stay for two years. We play him for those two, his class is what pushes us over the top and wins us a flag. Then we trade him back to Victoria for a top ten draft pick and a second round pick if it comes to that, and supercharge our rebuild. Or we convince him to stay, and he becomes part of a multiple flag winning side.

Nothing worthwhile was ever gained without taking a risk.
