I want to like Jarod Berry more, especially because athletically he absolutely stands out with size, strength and speed.

But I think I figured out what has been nagging at me as to why I'm not overly keen. He sort of seems like the Shaun Atley, Elliot Kavanagh of this draft. At the start of their draft year, talked up as a top 5 pick, then by the end of it, absolutely not. It's far from the best way to judge someone, but I think that's what's making me not be very high on him.

Yeah he doesn't really stick out to me among all the others available. I'm only going off afl draft central on youtube but I'd be a bit meh if we used one of our 1st 2 on him

My first impressions of Hayward are that he looks and plays like Mayes. Tallish high half forward. Am I missing something?

The Fyfe reference is that our recruiters were present (watching someone else) the day Fyfe announced himself by kicking 9 in a colts game. He was seen as a third tall then. The label back then was a "tweener"- not tall enough to be a key forward in the AFL, not quick enough to be a midfielder.

Now everyone is looking for the next Fyfe. But the chances are, if Hayward is the next Fyfe, he'd be playing midfield by now. Back then 188-190cm was seen as too tall for a midfielder. Now, if you're that height and can run, they love putting you in the midfield.

The next Fyfe will be playing midfield at colt level, not a third tall.

I agree about the Fyfe reference but he really is growing on me. To kick 9 at a high level you need to be a good footballer. Add elite fitness (hopefully) and coaching (hopefully), could be anything

I'm sold on Berry.

The only thing I was worried about was the role he would play in afl. We don't need a third defender. In 'Tomorrows heroes', he sees himself as a midfielder who pushes forward.

Want. He looks like the most lockity lock certainty to make it in the afl of any of the players at around our pick. He just screams 200 games. He screams toughness and size and want.

Berry looks too good for pick 14, so I’d be ecstatic and confused if we got him.

If Taranto fell to 14 I’d be wondering what the hell the catch is!

Just on the media front;

Terry wallace had us taking an inside mid on tac cup future stars; venables, scharenberg, fisher and clarke were a few names listed

Mick ablett had us taking a back flanker to compliment pittard and increase our run; berry or logue back when we had pick 9. Brad johnson suggested a clean outside ball user

Cal twomey also suggested a good ball user in witherden but also suggested hayward galluci and (lol) taranto

Brett andersons inside footy profiles come out this thursday stay tuned!

Geez...youd find greater concensus on who we will take amongst BigFooty posters! That's say'n something!

Great observation! So called experts have no idea what Port's needs are. Hopefully Cripps and his team a more focussed.
Picking winners from watching under 18 footy is so difficult. Take Haywood for example - he looks and plays like a CHF but is only 186cm - put him an AFL team and he will be monstered by taller defenders.
I am still not sold on this draft apart from 6 outstanding youngsters who we will not get a chance to pick.
Having 4 picks from 14 to 31 will hopefully produce at least one good AFL player, but it is no guarantee.

Fisher is a genuine footballer and played some great footy in the WAFL this year, but at 175cm he's always going to slip down on draft day.

He's busy but a fair bit of sloppy ball use in those highlights. And at 175cm as Macca points out, not a priority for us.

Is this draft's Gallucci related to the Gallucci who was just delisted by Collingwood?

Carlton, same thing! ;)

Berry and SPP would be amazing.

Berry looks bigger and better in first person than on highlights. The guy has steel in his eyes. If he was the at 14 I'd just take him. At 17 you can punt on who is left of Marshall, Venables or SPP and hope you get a 'special' player. At 30 i would pick Clarke if he is still there. I just think Berry and Clarke are two 'certainties' at their picks to have an immediate impact , play lots of games and add steel to the team. At 31 there could still be some really good players like Sproule / B. Cox / Battle / Hayward / Bolton / Villis / C. Cox / Poholke. Need more picks. I'd be happy to get Walker or Hinge late to replace O'Shea. Chuck in a project ruck and a small forward (Lebois is growing on me) and our list is looking good.

I think your post shows us the logic in our trade period was pretty good.
I agree with Berry, he's my first choice of the realistic options for 14.
Also agree with your pick 17 choices.
All your suggestions at 30/31 are good options, I'd also add in Scharenberg and Fisher (in that order).

edit; Atley as well.
