Just 13,802 for Lions/Crows tonight; the lowest crowd between the two sides since the Brisbane Lions were formed.

If that's not bad enough, Lions next two home games are against Freo & GWS who would bring lower amounts of fans than the Crows. Could a sub-10k Gabba crowd be on the cards?

Lions crowds have finally fallen through the floor this year.

Nah, they've been on this track for a while now; had five sub-15k crowds last year for example.

But an established club getting a sub-10k crowd at their home ground, that basically hasn't happened since Fitzroy left the comp. If nothing else it would help guarantee another priority pick.

More than decent crowd for two teams down the ladder.
True. Bang on expectation. Desperately needed win for the Pies facing the Lions at the MCG next week. Turns 25-28,000 into 32-35,000 I think.

The Hawks now have a big task ahead to reverse their flagging fortunes. Two tough games before the Suns at the MCG will potentially result in a very small attendance.

The Lions crowd is not that bad in relation to its recent home games. The Bombers and Tigers drew low 20's to the GABBA a few weeks ago and it's generally accepted the Lions home support at present is in the 13-14,000 area. The big VIC clubs add another 7-8,000 extra. 13,800 is possibly a thousand or two below their early home fixtures in terms of home support but what do you expect?? Their next fixtures pose a real challenge now however.

The Giants crowds appear very disappointing. Sub 11,000 for this team is very poor and is twice in a row around this mark. Obviously a combination if less than desirable fixturing and a somewhat disappointing level of natural attendance growth trajectory for mine.

Hopefully the Bombers can fill the Dome with 40,000 tomorrow in what would be a great crowd at the venue.. They'll go pretty close.

Thats what happens when you linger on the bottom for a few seasons in a row fans find something more rewarding and less frustrating to do
The trick is to start wining again and get them back.
Unfortunately some will never return, so for Brisbane being in a semi hostile AFL area its vital for themselves and the comp in general to get back up the list ASAP

3 games tomorrow to finish the round 9

  • essendon v west coast at docklands
  • melbourne v north at the MCG
  • Fremantle v carlton at subiaco
157,163 needed to pass round 9 last year - no chance IMO
112,156 needed to maintain a lead on aggregate over last year. Possible.

The 112,000 may happen but the 157,000 has no hope Still the crowds are holding fairly well.Same cant be said of both Rugby codes.

Thats an OK crowd for GWS Ripper finish as well.

It could be more than at ANZ for the RL tonight and it was! only 10,077 at the cavernous ANZ Stadium Parra V Canberra so we shouldnt be too harsh on the GWS crowds in Sydney.

Thought it was a pretty rubbish crowd TBH, but you're right in that it's pretty normal for sporting crowds in Sydney. They're just s**t all round, no matter what the sport.
It probably shows just how well the Swans have done in Sydney to get the crowds they do.

Well thats better than what some of the established Sydney NRL clubs are getting at the moment. Even GWS ourdrew the Parramatta Eels today.

We've been garbage since 2005 really apart from a few one-off seasons, and we've had a whole new team cut away a third of our membership/supporter base in that period too. Considering we're no chance of even making finals until the 2020s I'm shocked we haven't had a four figure crowd yet against a low-drawing club.

That said GWS and Fremantle games will be tests. We should get five figures though...just.

Referencing NRL crowd figures seems like an easy out (happens in this thread a lot) whenever there's an ordinary AFL crowd.

You only have to look at the overall crowd aggregates and averages to see its no contest between the two codes.

10,677 @ Spotless Stadium

Not too bad
I know that 10,677 in context with Sydney's Rugby league crowds, is quite satisfactory. The GWS should be striving for more. 2 home games in a row at Spotless was probably not the smartest fixturing move. But the positive is that the two games were crackers. It's going to be a long slow burn for GWS. I sincerely hope (for their sake) they actually make, and win a GF over the next couple of years.

I'll also re-iterate again that Canberra could easily host a 4th H&A game. We're footy mad here, and it wouldn't hurt Spotless to lose one - would hopefully make the what would be 7 home games more valuable for fans to attend. ACT Government and AFL will soon begin negotiations to extend their agreement. Maybe a 4th game will clinch a much needed upgrade to facilities here.

But is this factoring in there's only 8 matches this round? Would be surprised to see advantage AFL crowds had over last year evaporate so suddenly.

It's a contest for hearts and minds in Western Sydney.

but NRL doesnt average anywhere near the same as AFL. they are different codes with different expectations. If the Broncos were an AFL club in an AFL heartland, they would average 50K each round easily. Attendance isnt everything. The TV figures showcase this.

it is not a "fair/even" comparison

Not sure you can say that. If the Broncos were an AFL club in an AFL heartland, they wouldnt be the only team in a town of 2.5 million for 30 years either. The Broncos have some huge upsides that no team in any comp gets. Sole team, in its key sporting heartland, with good facilites, and guaranteed prime time coverage on tv which also means their home fixtures are good for crowds.

*assuming everything else stay equal.

i agree that it would be highly unlikely that a Broncos AFL club would be alone or everything else you said would happen in an AFL comp. my point is that, whatever factor it is, the NRL and AFL are different sports/leagues with different viewing patterns. it was a simple explanation of what i was trying to tell.

The Broncos crowds overall are also pretty, ordinary this season esp when you take into account the success they have had for a long period of time in a one team town that is supposed to be RL heartland territory.
They should sellout Suncorp every week with the exposure they get in QLD

Interesting to see Melbourne v Norh Melbourne crowd. Biggest crowd between the 2 is 36,000 think wat back in the 1960's. Will depend on how many north fans turn up? Melbourne fans would need to turn up in great numbers like over 30,000 to have any chance ( they did get 27,000 against the dockers so maybe their is a small chance).

Essendon will get between 35-40,000 same with freon as well against the blues
