Can one of the sports med experts tell me how much pain occurs when you do a hammy? I've done something--mild pain when I run. No pain walking. Minor pain lifting heavy stuff. Pain sitting on soft seats. I finished a run after noticing it, but didn't get any worse along the way.
Any clues? Pull, tendonitis, small tear?

A well done hammy hurts like all $@#% when you first do it but the pain isnt persistent like a broken bone. Once done it only really hurts when in use. Ive done a few and had One really bad one which finished me as a footballer. I dont think I could run on it for a few weeks at least with any of them. Months for the tear.

I think the pain could be described as being stabbed in the leg by the end of a broomstick for a pull and being stabbed in the leg by a blunt saw when torn.

Imagine a bad cramp in the back of the thigh. Then imagine trying to walk with that cramp. You don't want to bend your knee because it retracts and makes it hell again.

Then there is a dull ache while resting then it ignites when you move. Until it is fixed. Then for weeks after you are healed you are still gunshy

Dr Peter Larkins said last night on radio that he done some digging & Smith had a knock to his medial ligament in his knee which was more of an issue, which is of course in direct contradiction with the report released by the department of media affairs at the Adelaide football club

Tendinitis in the buttock. Talia was embarrassed by the whole thing: apparently he has never had a hamstring injury and didn't know what it would feel like. Certainly, the club thought for days that it was a hamstring, and the reports said so, but the scans indicated absolutely no damage. If it had been a hammy, there's no way he would have played the next week.

Sounds like the playing group are concerned about hamstring injuries....

Am I the only one who doesn't care who the AFC says in regards to injuries?

It doesn't matter whether Smith has a tight hammy, a bump on the knee or tetanus. He ended up with the tracksuit top on and will have to prove his fitness to the club - not to me, not to Bigfooty, and not to Doc Larkins.

So long as it's being managed well internally, the club can blow whatever smokescreen it likes in injury news.

Nope

Communication about the injuries is one of the few things i couldn't care less about

I don't care so much what the injury is, but I do want their best guess on return dates. And I think they've been pretty good this year and last with that.

Thanks for the replies. It's obviously not a hamstring as the pain is nowhere near as severe as described. I'll rest whatever it is for a couple of weeks and then commence running again.

I'd visit a physio for a sports massage on the lower back. It isn't the most fun massage you'll ever have and the happy ending is that it has stopped but it'll fix it up.

I've said previously, the club can keep me in the dark all they want if they feel that holding that information back from the public is giving them some small advantage. It's not like I need to know for sure if McGovern will be back in R12, R16 or R1 2018.

Smith was at the breakfast on Sunday morning after recovery. No ice to the knee. Walking fine. Injured players don't usually come to the brekky. How the hell would Larkins find out anything?

Got his info from Rooch

I don't care about them fudging except where it is detrimental to the player eg I'm hearing our players soft that they're out for so long with corkies when that is not the injury.

If a player is getting upset because the media is reporting they missed multiple games with a corkie then I'd suggest that player is soft and needs to get a thicker skin (Note: I don't think our players are actually getting upset by this).

Beg to differ on this one lol. Or in particular, which club he will return with :D

It's a sudden grab usually and varies in intensity depending on severity , bad ones feel life shot guns but most are more mild

It actually feels v similar to onset of cramp and if it's a mild strain that requires 21 days sometimes you don't even know for sure . But it continues to hurt and then if you do an activity that loads it you feel it increase in pain ( eg sprint , kick or bending over )

Also with hammies - they get you running within 7 days unless you do it as bad as Gov . But he's been running solid for 3 weeks + already

Generally you can run at 60 % within 7 days but it's the sprint and sudden deceleration or bending over at speed or kicking that is the problem

It's actually not a bad injury to keep your fitness with because you can jog laps even at reasonable middle distance speed

Ah, thanks for that. I'll go back to jogging on the road and treadmill. It's about a fortnight since I first noticed it.
Edit:
Then again, I'm a whisker older than the average footy player, so maybe I should be cautious.

I see you've been inundated with advice already but thought I'd still put my 2 cents in...

I don't think you've "done" anything but you're obviously not humming along like a well-oiled machine.

go and get yourself a foam roller and look up how to use it on YouTube, if you like to run regularly it'll change your life. It's all about prehab.

a lot of people have plenty of room for improvement in their running technique too but that's a bit more difficult to work on.
