My understanding is that the AFL have actually asked the TAC Cup to have the zoning rules and a limit to tagging, because they want to better see who can win contests.

We'll they're not exactly preparing em for 1st round.. we're sitting here waiting for 3 f yrs for blokes to play FFS.

Why the lack of love on Fogarty?

You realise prior to his knee injury was universally talked about as the potential pick 1? He dominated an early season rep game vs peers. Got experience in SANFL midfield, fwd and back as a 17 year old and showed good signs.

Pros.

Powerful mid/fwd, break from congestion.
55m kick and is accurate on both sides.
Physical.
Decent speed.
Good hands.
Versatile. A player who can be relied upon yto impact the game up forward, down back and through the midfield. And I'm not talking Goldsack versatile more Pavlich versatile.
Reads the game well and makes good decisions with the ball.

Honestly the more I think about it the more I want us to select him.

You're right he is a powerful build and that tends to enable him to play multiple positions. But I'm worried he's a bit of a man child.

His build in itself allows him certain luxuries at junior level against smaller opponents i.e breaking tackles and general bustling through packs.

I don't think he actually has great speed or acceleration though, so he doesn't burst out of these packs like you'd want. His hands in congestion are also a bit hit and miss from what I've seen, so he can't play as that pure extractor either (ala Watson/Cripps).

He does read the game well and has a good football brain, which helps to find space playing forward or setting up play from the back. But I'd rather someone with more standout attributes.

Someone should bop that bishop.

I like that someone mentioned earlier Cerra might slide to us.
If he doesn't well que Cerra Cerra then.

Black (well, dark) Knight from Queen's Knight 4 to Queen's Bishop 6, bishop captured.

Checkmate in 5 moves...

None of the talls really stick out to me to be honest. Quaynor sounds like a great get so that lowers the need to take Coffield as well.

Ill be hoping that Cerra lasts till 6. Perfect future replacement for Pendlebury.

If we do land Lynch, that would give us Moore and Lynch up fwd, that is really good. I expect Moore to have a breakout year next year.

Hoping Petty or Clavarino (preferably Petty) last till 38. That would give us McLarty and Petty/Clavarino down back. I think McLarty will be good hope that he can break through for some games next year. Id pick up Sam Collins as a DFA as well. Massive upgrade on Schade and Keeffe.

I know for a fact that after a initial positive reception, recruiters now think it's become a major issue. Particularly scouting forward of centre.

They simply can't get a good gauge on forward craft (leading patterns etc) because the space and contests don't replicate what players will be faced with at AFL level (third man up, zoning defenders etc).

I reckon the selection (or non selection) of Naughton if he is available will tell us a fair bit about the impact Gubby had on our list structure planning end of 2016.

We basically cleared out the defenders with poor disposal last year. Frost, Brown and Marley all effectively punted or let go. I actually didn’t mind the decision making, as it signalled to me they weren’t going to tolerate turnover merchants or poor users as you need to be able to move it fast and effective before the opposition sets up their defensive zone. Although it left us so thin we had to get guys like Schade to fill some holes. You still need stoppers, but the days of carrying a Presti or a N. Brown were gone because the speed of the game meant you couldn’t transition through those guys and it slowed you down.

If they go for Naughton - that says to me Gubby was the driving influence for that approach. That’s if his kicking is as big a liability as it appears.

I'm not surprised that recruiters are saying that. Personally, I think they are just making excuses for misreading the way the game was heading and thus continued to pay huge picks for Mark and kick power forwards. Not noticing their reduced effectiveness unless they have a ground level game, are explosive on the lead or are endurance athletes who can continually present.

The Lions have been ravaged by the "go-home factor" in recent years, with a host of talented young players including Sam Docherty, Elliot Yeo and Billy Longer all departing and forging impressive careers at other clubs.
What could have been.

There's as much chance of me or you being selected at #6 as Clavarino. He will be there at #38 and possibly even in our 50s picks.

Agreed - I actually think Clubs will pass on him at the ND. He will most likely be rookie listed.

Unfortunately for us, I think Cerra will be go top 3.

It may end up being Dow that drifts a little (McCluggage) and Stephenson who rises (Tarranto)

If Dow was available at 6 I would take him in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately? I’d be thrilled with Dow over Cerra.
