A few words from Wells on our selections:

Geelong Falcons captain Cooper Stephens was taken a few picks before most draft experts predicted when Geelong pounced at pick 16.

But Cats recruiting boss Stephen Wells couldn't be happier to have landed Stephens and Dandenong Stingray Sam De Koning.

On Stephens, who broke his leg earlier this year, Wells said: "As it turned out the break wasn't too bad. By the end of the year he tested very well at the combine."

Wells said the Cats were bullish about De Koning's versatility.

"He was an All-Australian as a full back in the Under-18 championships this year but has potential to be a forward or a ruckman as well," Wells said.

I can understand us not taking Kemp. The knee is a massive concern. He's a big boy so the load through it won't get any smaller. And I don't think we could afford to take the risk with our first. Just a bit surprised that we went with Stephens over Robertson but a number of clubs have baulked at him since so maybe there is more in this?
his kicking and the darren glass family connection i think would be the two biggest reasons why clubs are nervous. But i rated Cooper ahead of him anyway

Assuming you mean Deshaun Watson, but yes, let's not melt too early. Obviously I prefer Robertson and Kemp over Stephens, but I'll back the kid in and wish him the best. Too keep everyone here happy, hopefully we end up with Robertson anyway.

Yep sorry

I think people put too much of an emphasis on players who can play immediately.
Nothing wrong with selecting players who may need a bit of time to either develop or recover from an injury.
These guys are kids who hopefully have 12 years in the game. No need to rush them.
Everyone knows talls take longer to develop. One thing with DeK is his marking ability and reading of the play is class. Jumped in before Port or Carlton took him.

Port have been linked to Worrell. Adel have been linked to Gould and Jones.

Bris will want Robertson and I reckon the Hawks, Coll and maybe Ess could be throwing up Future Firsts for any of the first 5 picks tomorrow.
I suspect he might have gone Georgides as well if he had not been taken
agree 100% I was really hoping he’d be there at 24. Guys like Sumich said he was the best WA player. If you notice the last 2 phantoms port and Geel are linked to the same players. I was at a function where Wells said the Cats had gone with Butters last year but Port nabbed him first.

Anyone thinking that Gould will get to us is dreaming, Adelaide clubs have 3 of the next 4 picks, Crows will get him, they were one of the clubs along with us that had been speaking to him, upset about missing him

So if you look at the AFL draft central guide booklet for 2019.

We picked Cooper Stephens because he was injured and has potential. Yet the draft guide has his "ceiling" as "average". He also has "average" disposal. Sounds like a Geelong player. I can't question his contested work and endurance, and apparently he was in the coaches box every weekend whilst being injured. That might help with getting recruited. Anyway, he has the chiseled jaw line, maybe he might appeal to the next gen of female supporters :)

As for DeKoning, yeah his marking looked good at the Champs, but he didn't really set it alight in the U18 competition. They are obviously planning for future needs with a Key Defender, but I don't know about this one. Looks like a bit of a reach for Key Defender in a weak draft for Key Position. They also say in the draft guide his ceiling is "average".

Time will tell. Let's hope Wellsy got it right.

coming into the year many people had cooper around top 10

Anyone but Bianco, don't rate him. Screams Lang for mine.

In order of preference:

Robertson
Rivers
Gould
Rantall
Williams
Taheny
Jones

Will probably edit tomorrow, forgotten someone I'm sure. If tonight proved anything, it's that Wells is always a little left field and unpredictable. Not that we didn't know that already. Still can't believe passing on Kemp after his comments today, smokescreen obviously.

Add Sharp in there.

I'd love Sharp with Pick 36. But I'd be staggered if he lasts to there.

I don't think we will recruit either of Comben or Bryan now, given we chose De Koning.

would love dylan williams. think he has maybe the highest upside of everyone left, kicked 14 goals in the finals series last year. few injuries stop him from having a consistent year. might be biased though cause he played junior footy at my club and went to the same school as me lol.

If we were focused on looks and recruiting our next golden boy we would've picked Kemp or Robertson. Seems to be a theme of the night.
