What or who is this "rover" you speak of?

Was this a knight or a centurion warrior of smaller stature from a bygone era - who roved the fields of battle, slicing up the beasts and infidels that wouldst destroy us with speed, precision and courage?

Your language appears quaint and olde worlde.

I know only of conquistadores, who embark upon epic conquests in the wars of Rules Australian, who goeth under names like "on-ballers", "inside and outside mids", "run with types", "utilities" and "high pressure act, medium forwards".

A rover is pretty much what Robbie Gray is when he’s in the middle. Not an inside mid that wins the hard ball, but a classy player that gets the ball via a tap and weaves his way through play. I purposely said rover because we’ve got heaps of slow big bodied inside mids.

Here's how I see the first round playing out.

1. Gold Coast - Matt Rowell

Best player in the draft, and Gold Coast need midfielders.

2. Gold Coast - Noah Anderson

Second best player in the draft, and Gold Coast need midfielders.

3. GWS - Tom Green (matching a bid by Melbourne - GWS lose 6 and shift 40 to 41)

Some might say 'Why would Melbourne bid on an inside mid like Green?' It's really simple - they know that GWS will match it and wipe out their 6th pick which gives the Demons access to Jackson with Pick 8 (GWS has shown interest in him too), because Green is that good. And if they stupidly don't, they have just added a Patrick Cripps type to go alongside Clayton Oliver. It's win-win.

4. Melbourne - Hayden Young

Just a brilliant user of the football from half-back. Those 45 degree long kicks over traffic in the corridor is what Melbourne needs to break the lines of a forward press that they always seem to struggle with and will expand the ground. Plus he's actually a good defender too.

5. Adelaide - Dylan Stephens

There are better players on the board. But this is a pick based around the fact that Rory Atkins is a RFA at the end of next year, turning 26 and not part of their next flag tilt, and the Crows will be hoping that someone is dumb enough to offer him a ridiculous contract so they can get another draft pick and supercharge their rebuild. Plus they'll think he has the potential to be their version of Connor Rozee or Xavier Duursma, and he doesn't have the go home factor that other players in the draft might have. (Note: If Melbourne doesn't bid on Green, Adelaide will, because the same criteria surrounding Atkins applies doubly so to Brad Crouch).

6. Sydney - Sam Flanders

Best player available. Can go forward and kick goals, can run through the midfield. Exactly what the Swans need.

7. Fremantle - Caleb Serong

Good complement to Nathan Fyfe with his ability to go forward and through the midfield. Best player available.

8. Melbourne - Luke Jackson

Melbourne has a 29 year old Max Gawn going into the 2020 season, Preuss and a rookie in Bradtke. There was a reason why they traded into this draft, and Jackson is that reason. They need to start planning for the future now because in two years time they'll be up shit creek in the ruck department. Look at how Ryder declined after he hit 30, and Gawn can't handle the heat in the kitchen as it is.

9. Fremantle - Liam Henry (matching a bid by Carlton - Fremantle lose 10)

Carlton need pressure forwards. Henry is probably the best pressure forward in the draft. Fremantle aren't going to give him up.

10. Carlton - Cody Weightman

Like I said, if there's one thing Carlton lack, it's pressure forwards, and Weightman is probably the second best pressure forward in the draft. This is a needs pick, based on the Blues actually rating the players they have and wanting to find a complementary player to them.

11. Hawthorn - Lachlan Ash

A line breaking defender who breaks games open with speed, agility and kicking? Why wouldn't Clarkson go for the best player available?

12. Port Adelaide - Brodie Kemp

The cards fall our way. Kemp is exactly what we need - can defend, can go forward, can run through the midfield. Pants down lap around the table time. Don't care that he's injured with an ACL...he'll be a superstar. Plus he's from Echuca just like Wines.

13. Western Bulldogs - Fisher McAsey

Dogs need a defender to replace an ageing Jackson Trengove, and McAsey gives them the opportunity to create a dynasty style team. Best key defender in the draft.

14. Geelong - Deven Robertson

A good addition to the Cats midfield to replace Tim Kelly to give them a shot at a flag next year, and can take over from Selwood/Dangerfield once they retire.

15. Gold Coast - Josh Worrell

I was going to pick Gould here, but I'm of the opinion that Gould is like Stewart Dew - puts weight on easily and doesn't really like to train. The worst possible environment for Gould would be Gold Coast under Stewart Dew. So Worrell goes there instead...plus I reckon Worrell will be a better player due to his versatility and Gold Coast will want trade capital to entice Max King from St Kilda.

16. Brisbane - Elijah Taylor

Brisbane needs to go all in while Martin is still able to ruck, because in two years they'll go through their flat patch. Surround Hipwood with Cameron and Taylor and watch the sparks fly. This is going to be their Hawthorn 2008/Western Bulldogs 2016 season, IMO - not so much in that they'll win the flag, but that they've got a relatively easy fixture still that doesn't match their output.

17. Geelong - Will Gould

Perfect replacement for an ageing Harry Taylor. Geelong's recruitment of Josh Jenkins should tell you everything you need to know about how desperate they are to win in the now...but the selection of Gould means they can win in the future as well.

18. Port Adelaide - Miles Bergman

Just a feeling I'm getting. Bergman missed all his U16 season and half of the U17s through injury, so he doesn't have the confidence of the other players in the draft pool. Best penetration on his kick in the draft pool, best vertical leap in the draft pool (with shin splints mind you), a strong mark...would slot seamlessly into the team in the high forward role next to Rozee. Can play all over the ground. Screams a Port Adelaide pick to me.

19. Richmond - Trent Rivers

Perfect replacement for their other Trent when he retires.

Great work. Kemp seems wishful thinking especially as it requires two sides above us in the draft to lose draft picks before 12 in bidding on Green and Henry.

Williams is another to consider at 18.

It's incredible to think that if Mead doesn't get bid on before 29 we could conceivably walk away from the draft with Stephens (12), Gould (18) & Taheney (29).

Would set us up for outside pace, Jonas upgrade and an R Gray (the forward) replacement.

There's an interesting article on the AFL website about Gold Coast paying four kids $500k a year without them even playing a game. This might explain to people once and for all why we have a 'hole' in our list. Do yourselves a favour and go read it, because it may clue you in as to why we make the decisions we do.

"Clubs tend to spend more of their salary cap on their top-liners and high draft picks, with several sources saying about 80 per cent of the cap goes to the top 15 or so most valued players.

Experienced players are often left accepting base payments between $125,000 to $150,000, while the kids leapfrog them."

This is probably what put Sam Gray's nose out of joint. Too bad Sam - Connor, Zak and Xavier are better than you are now. What will they be like when they hit your age?

"It is now commonplace for first-round draft picks to re-sign on lucrative deals – often within their first season – with sources saying the going rate starts at $350,000 and typically goes up to $500,000. "

"A regular comment among the industry sources who spoke to AFL.com.au was that players talk more about their wage these days and "they all seem to know what everyone is on".

That's effectively led to 'If he's making that, why aren't I?' and has played a role in the other clubs being left footing the bill for the new standard rate for young guns."

So basically...unless you are playing finals regularly, your kids are going to be demanding big deals because they are part of the best 22. Then once they reach free agency, they'll piss off to another club to continue to make the money they were on. Or someone will come in for them if they are being 'underpaid' like St Kilda did with Howard.

This is the reason we don't pay the cap. It's got nothing to do with debt. It's about having an overdraw facility when the team is in the frame for winning a flag to pay the talent that we recruit. When Matthew Richardson talks about the club wanting the best U23 group in the league, he means the best star players complemented by the best base wage players.

I think the only way we’ll get Pickett is if Mead hasn’t been bid on by 29 and we take mini Choppy there . He’ll probably be gone by our later picks

This is the exact scenario i am hoping for.

We are going to get two players at 12 & 18 who will be solid contributors going forward, if no bid comes for mead before 29 then we really have an opportunity to go for a player with a high ceiling. Pickett is definitely not a pick 29, but we can afford to take the risk if we have locked in some good citizens early.

Ideal draft for me:

12 - Stephens (then either Kemp or McAsey)
18 (pending what happens at 12) - Weightman/Gould/Rivers/Taylor
29 - Pickett
Late 50's early 60's matched points - Mead

Rookies - Burgoyne and a genuine tall KPD (either young or mature)

Can you bank the savings though? I was under the impression that it was only a year to year proposition i.e. if you paid the floor (95%) one year you could pay up to 105% the following year but it couldn’t be rolled over into any subsequent years. I might have this wrong but I don’t think you can (for example) pay 95% for 4 years and then splurge in the 5th year with an extra 20% in your pocket.

Also the cost-cutting scenario seems more consistent with the Club reportedly asking Boak and Gray to accept some delayed payments in order to make the books look better this year.

You are allowed to pay 95% of the cap and that extra 5% can be spend in the following year.

Lol at the idea a club that may be struggling financially is going to turn it around virtually overnight because they only paid 95% one year like that would solve all of their problems

Never mind the inequalities in fixtures, asa’s, board tampering etc that is the real problem.

The favourite Vic teams get great timeslots

The cost in travel over a season between a team like freo and Collingwood must be enormous. The cost of flying and housing a team + coaches + support staff so approx 40 people every second week vs 3-5 times a year must be 6 figures.

Port are losing their supporter base because afl appointed board members block change that they don’t see as necessary because it’s not important for them for port to succeed, only to be mildly viable.

The equalisation opportunity called the draft has been taken away from the bottom clubs since all the picks go to expan teams and nga academies. Meanwhile the top clubs can lure free agents on modest pay with the promise of success and asa’s.

But yeah, paying 95% is gonna help a club that is struggling financially Gil, you ****ing headcase.

I’ve got no problem with the scheme itself, but let’s not pretend it’s anything else other than a cap manipulation tool.

Gould confirms he was 106 at the combine with skin folds of 78 in this mornings rag.

He has since "trimmed down" to 100 and 60.

Warning bells for me about his ability to maintain his standards.

It is easy to be disciplined for 8 weeks and lose weight for the draft it is harder to maintain that for a decade.

Apparently Sydney told him he wouldn't get drafted at all if his folds weren't down to 55 which whilst it seems unlikely says a lot about how nervous clubs are about Gould's skin folds.

Gould is a strange one for me. On one hand there are the obvious warning signs with his weight/skinfolds. On the other hand, I've actually seen a bit of him play (unlike most other draftees). What I see when he plays is a good player. He moves OK, reads the play pretty well, plays tough, is a good kick. I think it all comes down to his personality type. Is he a bit lazy? Does he have the dedication and desire to make the most of his career? I hope we do our homework here. Could see him being a very good player , one might almost say a Shannon Hurn type :) or he carves out a solid SANFL career after a couple of years on a list.

Thanks for the overview, but you want us to pick 2 seriously injured players? Won't happen, shouldn't happen.

Bergman at 18 would piss me off, would be such a nothing pick at Port imo

That’s why I think it will happen. It would be like the Duursma pick.
