Potentially a young coach, effective game plan, exciting list with up to 5 rising stars in 2019 alone. If we wanted to make a play, we would be very close again.

And we were very close with the others, but they chose to be be paid handsomely to remain at their successful incumbent club.

Let's be honest here, most teams have effective gameplan...............just that most of they doesn't work on the day. Our best recruits have been the decent B graders. If we can have a continuous stream of Higgin, Polec, Pittard we will be well served, whoever is looking at the free agents is doing a great job. I heard we are looking at Papley and Ellis from sydney and richmond respectively. Gut instinct tells me that these two will be immense gets. Just look at richmond, their flag while on surface is won by the cotchins, martin, riewoldt, rance, the players who made a real difference were actually the likes of astbury, mcintosh, edwards, houli etc who fill their roles to perfection allowing the superstars to flourish. We still a bit filling of roles to do, the next 2 years are vital as we have ziebell and cunnington at their prime and forming one of the best 1-2 combo.

We're not in for Coniglio because we have his type covered. Same reason we didn't flirt with Shiel last year.
If you get half a chance with a bloke like Coniglio you jump at it with both hands reguardless of if we need his type or not. You cannot have enough players of his calibre in my opinion.

100% plus coniglio is a free agent so keep pucks and bring in elite talent

Free agents (1 of Ellis, Astbury, Tomlinson, cogs) need to be the target to keep our first pick this year unless we can trade for a Taranto type

The ‘we have his type’ line doesn’t wash with me. He’s a top 5 mid in the comp, better than Josh Kelly if you ask me. If there’s even a hint we could be a chance to sign him we should be all over it. Shiel and Coniglio are different types of players also. Coniglios skills are superior, and he’s better defensively.

By no measure is he a top 5 mid in the comp bar personal opinion.

He's simply not worth the money being thrown about. And even though we could squeeze it the fact we're not in it means one of two things - we don't want him or we know he doesn't want us. I'm content deferring to the guys handling the money.

If there's a third thing it means the club has learned to keep their dealings secret.

Your third point is a very salient one. Maybe we are keeping our proposed trade dealings close to our chest, and away from the prying eyes and ears of the media. That’s the smart way to go about it.

I'd hope it's the way we do any business here on in. Other clubs have no problem keeping their cards to their chests.

Well I hope your 3rd sentence is accurate. Don't agree at all with the first 2. Coniglio is a star. Higgins and Cunners aren't playing forever.

They’re pretty close on season averages. Jy's numbers are better since he’s gone full time mid, and Florent is playing more fwd/mid. He’s no mug.

Not much difference between Jy and No1 Macgrath stat wise either. Imagine the difference in trade value people would come up.with if they were available. Thought I wanted Florent on that draft night, couldn't be happier with Jy. Taranto probably the only one id take ahead of Jy now.

Prob not reported but we got the no, we r not chance to be even in the running. To those type of players, coming to north is reputation killing. These players aspiration is to get to a big 4, nab a flag or two, fully setup for life. Also theor managers have a lot Tovar’s play for, if they got their superstar players to north it’s considered a bloat in their cv as u took a superstar from a small club to another one, no future players want them to be there r manager. For instance, if u r a job agency, do you want a reputation of having regular success of delivering candidates to the big 4 accounting firm or those family ones in Frankston? Lest not suffer the humiliation and get the right players first. A very strong foundation is a sure way to sustained success. We have the star power already but we need a bit more work in establishing the foundation namely a ruck to replace goldy, an explosive counter attacking small defender.

We've snared some absolute high end bargains in Simpkin (was rated top three before the leg break, got him at 12), LDU (Freo will rue not taking him at 2 for many a long year) and Tarryn (homie they should have brought back that freakin' mini draft thing where blokes are taken before the real draft just for Tarryn, he's that quality) at 8.

And the back end drafting a la Zurhaar and Larkey late has been top shelf.

I'd rather keep cap room to pay the emerging kids.

It was literally Brad's idea to go the big fish strategy, he convinced the AFL to change the rules and let clubs "bank" cap, thinking he was ever so clever and would STRIKE and it would end up happy days.

Its like how I once went on a date with this very hot Russian woman, and had convinced myself the hipster movie, funky bar and general chat couldn't fail.

And I ended up walking home half cut kicking a stone down the cobbled streets of a European city, not having signed Josh Kelly, Dustin Martin or Andrew Gaff.

Good post, except supporters shouldn't fall in to trap of thinking that every recently well performed team could significantly benefit clubs down the ladder with their sides peripheral discards. It's a fallacy.

If Ellis wanted to come to North on our terms then I would be happy to see him on the list, but it wouldn't be for major coin, nor for any significant type of trade. On current output he'd be on our periphery too.
Then why? If on periphery why?

Slightly disagree with Hrovat, he served his purpose as he came in at a time when our club let go a lot of the senior players and was in the process of gutting the deadwood. Credits have to be given to brad for his work in 2017 season when he rejuvenated our list to a point where we have a very solid foundation, only need to unearth a few stars and we will be right back in the game. The rat player well in a transition season in that he applied himself decently well as a small forward but of course, he was quickly replaced by the more talented ones we acquired. Him at carlton and gold coast would be a mainstay. In fact are we contemplating shipping mcmillan and wright to gold coast for some 2nd and 3rd rounders so we could trade upwards.
Disagree with hrovat unless you are talking VFL. Hrovat will be playing for Port Melbourne or Balwyn at best next year. Unlikely anyone wants wright or Macmillan. They are not sudden gems with upside that suit any contender's system. I am grateful to them both for their service. Did their best for the club and I appreciate it.

Trade upwards!?
As the unicorn said to the dacia

Well gold coast always needs experienced heads, ship out deadwood like wright, mcmillan, hvrovat. Gold coast really needs specialist players at either end of the ground to hold fort while the youngsters run around in the middle. The 3 of them for 2nd and 3rd rounder.

That is just vastly overly optimistic. McMillan I could see playing a role for someone like Gold Coast. Wright looks like he is cooked from too many injuries. Hrovat is a good VFL player but no more.

Not entirely.

Was more the salespeople that contributed to the missed opportunity. Had we offered Kelly $1.5 * 10, would he have said no? What about De Goey? Could $1.35m * 7 have got the chocolates?

We are doing the same with Horse, $1.25m P.a is probably only $2k per week after tax more than he is getting now - would you uproot your kids during VCE or whatever for a tiny bit extra walking around money?
Can't shake the trollness of your grandiose and always running too far past the finish line.

Twelve year old kid, arrogant eighteen year old kid, lonely person with library card whose carer gets bored with him quickly, real estate agent?

Wind a tiny world up on the internet. First rate campaigner mate. Get some help, or talk to people that have something in common with you as friends.

Good night

Started thinking about the players coming out of contract this year.

Goldstein - would try to retain. There's a risk an interested buyer comes offering him big overs in which case we'll have a choice to make but in no way would I not be trying to keep him at Arden Street.

Durdin - tracks on a similar trajectory for another couple of weeks and he's earned a 1-2 year deal

M Williams - surely a formality? 2-3 year deal

Larkey - ditto. 2-3 years. Get it done North

Hayden - another year on the rookie list to see through his rehab

Watson - in a bit of trouble unfortunately perhaps due to lack of opportunity or a having a definitive position. Would be interesting if he'd be retained if we didn't have to make a mandatory 3 delistings

Wright - sadly might be heading towards retirement due to body not holding up and younger players playing a similar role

Thompson - stays fit and a 1 year deal is a no-brainer

Hrovat - just not getting a look-in. Great VFL player, fantastic energy and attitude but a mid 20-s player barely getting considered for selection doesn't bode well

So predicting Watson, Wright, Hrovat to be the minimum delistings.

The rookie Toms - Murphy, McKenzie, Wilkinson - might all be in a bit of trouble depending on contract status due to their bad luck with injury.

Calling Sammy Wright "deadwood" should get you w a whack in the chops mate.

Sam Wright's done more for this footy club than you ever will.
