Callum Twomey on afl.com draft chat:
Cox is versatile but I get your point about not being a proven player in any locked down spot. It's also a bonus and think he can settle in at either end of the ground. Darcy Moore wasn't proven in his position coming through. The difference between Cox and Aaron Francis is Cox has genuine running ability and works - his brilliant six-minute run in the 2km time trial showed that. Essendon, GWS, Adelaide among the clubs having a look.

The Giants have to look tall at some stage of their run of early picks. They have five selections inside the first 29 picks and should get a tall forward in there somewhere. Is it Nik Cox? Could Matt Allison be available later on? Unfortunately a couple at the very top-end would be good Jezza replacements but will be bitten off.

Didn't realize until I gave this a listen that former giants academy player and one time swans rookie Sam Fisher won the Sandover Medal this year after finishing in the top 2 of the blues vfl b&f last year. So hopefully he gets a chance again in the afl from someone.

I know this wouldn’t be a popular view but I reckon Geelong might go after one of our inside mids next year. With Selwoods end nearing, I could see them going after Hopper/Taranto.
I’m not that against it to be honest. I reckon we need more burst in there. It would allow a XOH to move in there... and he’s quicker than Hopper and has a better tank.
It’s looking likely that Green might be the best of the midfield bulls, so with him and Taranto in there that is more than enough stoppage power.
What do you guys think?

I think Geelong will go after anyone.....and everyone

I definitely think they'll ask the question of Callan Ward, fit's their preferred age demographic perfectly 😂

Ummm... just watched Cox’s highlights. Make him priority 1.

Doubt that he'll make it past Essendon's trio of selections 😒

Also given your recent departures I'd have thought your club would be looking to regenerate with more star power from the pointy end and it's "Fab 5" that's currently being frothed over.

I actually like Cox more than any of the Fab 5. 2m tall, runs the 2km in 6 min, great kick off either foot. Takes good options. He kicked a set shot off his left foot from 40m... taking the piss. In 3 years, when he puts on about 10-15kg, I reckon he’ll be possibly the best pick from this draft - either him or Ugle Hagan.

And he’ll be multiple AA.

Not to mention future captain 😉
Not sure about his leadership capabilities... be hard to go past Tom Green as a future captain.

OK, current situation with GWS list (italics denotes an internal list shuffle):

Main list: 38 - 10 + 3 = 31 (target: 36 to 38) [Off: Shaw, Jacobs, Williams, Corr, Cameron, Langdon, Caldwell, Hately, Buntine, Lloyd] [On: Buckley, Hogan, Preuss]

Cat A Rookie: 5 - 3 + 2 = 4 (target: 4 to 6) [Off: Sheridan, Reid (commitment to re-take), Sproule (possible re-selection)] [On: Buntine, Lloyd]

Cat B Rookie: 2 - 1 = 1 (target: 0 to 2) [Off: Buckley]

Total main + rookie-A list: 35 of 42 (minimum 37) comprising 31 + 4.

National Draft selections available: 10, 13, 15, 20, 29, 52, (88). Note: 88 is bracketed because as we've committed to re-select Reid it really isn't a viable pick.

So, if we blow off Reid & Sproule, we could take 7 picks in the ND. Given that we've committed to re-select Reid, we can effectively take 6 picks plus Reid back on Rookie-A, which would be 37+5. Alternatively, we only have 5 decent picks in the ND, so we could use those 5 picks in the ND, and take another rookie on top of Reid (be that Sproule, Shane Savage, or someone else), which would be 36+6.

If we select Savage as a DFA before the ND onto the main list, then we'd stand at 36 of 42 @ 32+4 plus the commitment to Reid, so either 5 ND selections for a 37+5 list or 4 ND selections allowing another rookie selection for a 36+6 list.

If we're only going to take 4 selections, then a pick swap of 2 of our existing picks into a single earlier pick would seem to be on the cards. I presume we're trying to do that. And I guess we've got a few avenues to get Savage including the final Supplemental Listing to keep maximum options open.

I won't repeat my earlier discussions on who I think we need to target in the ND, but broad categories I certainly see us targeting: tall back (could be DGB, Cox, Reid or Chapman), running back, balanced midfielder, outside midfielder, small/medium forward.

I think Josh Green is the possible Rookie-B selection, but if he's selected at the ND we probably don't match (but I'd be surprised at such a selection).

Only my opinion but I would like the club to try and pick up 2 tall defenders early on in this draft, with Corr leaving that opens up a spot in the 22 and then I cant see Keefe going on beyond next season and Davis I see as having 2 seasons so by that time the 2 should be playing on a weekly basis
So for next season a back 7 of
Ash Davis Haynes
Cumming Taylor Whitfield
Kennedy
Possibly Perryman, Savage, Keefe filling in depending on needs and also if they do draft the 2 talls hopefully the team is playing well enough they can slot in for a game or 2
i just hope they play Whitfield permanently down back and he recaptures his 2018/19 form

It would have been good to see Townsend back at the club but if he does get another spot at the Gold Coast I am not sure what kind of playing time he will get with the large list they have and they will need to give the youth a good go in the team i would have thought as opposed to a 27/8 year old journey man

Ok so what round next year are we starting to worry about ASH leaving? 8?
Hopefully they’ll play him every week and he’ll have established a strong rapport with a stable back 6/7 early in the season.
Will be interesting to see who takes over from Shaw as the vocal leader in defence.
I expect Finlayson to move back to replace Corr.
Agree with others that it would be best to leave Whitfield back.

If one of our forwards goes back, surely it’s HH before Finlayson. Jez doesn’t have the mindset for a defender.
As for retaining Ash... surely we can front end his contract a bit after the amount of money that we freed up with the departures.

I'm bullish on retaining Ash.
He'll get opportunity and a reasonable contact.
He is from country Vic so we'll be away from home regardless and although over stated in general, he actually loved the Giants an in particular Whitfield, as a youngster
