Not knocking the kid, just was told that by one of his teammates.

What’s his style? Accumulator? Impact?
His teammate is really underselling his game, he was clearly bog.

Impact is his big thing, as a midfielder he can win a lot of the ball and have impact at the same time. His quieter games can be as a forward which came as a 16 year old playing NAB League. He had 20 disposals playing midfield against Dandenong and remember him beating Hayden Young in a one on one contest despite giving up experience and size.

The Northern Knights kicked off its season with a Good Friday win over Western Jets and may have discovered the next excitement machine.

In 30 degree heat at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve the Knights outlasted their NAB League rivals to claim a nine-point win, 8.13 (61) to 7.10 (52).

Ned Long was best-on-ground with 26 disposals and three goals rotating through the midfield while Joel Fitzgerald was the game’s leading possession-winner with 32 touches, 12 marks and four tackles.

However, it was Dominic Akuei’s performance that had tongues wagging with his marking, athleticism and versatility an intriguing combination.

The 196cm Old Trinity youngster started at full-back and took several intercept marks before being moved into the ruck, showcasing his mobility and leap, finishing with 12 touches, 13 hitouts, three tackles and a goal.

Knights coach Leigh Clarke said he expected to start getting some calls for more background on Akuei.

“Dom continues to literally come forward in leaps and bounds, he played full-back and took some amazing marks,” Clarke said.

“We had to swing him into the ruck because Fletcher Parkinson dislocated his shoulder so he stepped in against an AFL-listed ruckman from Geelong (Paul Tsapotolis) and almost jumped clean over him.

“It shows he’s able to impact in multiple roles and his mobility will also allow him to play on the wing, at his height and physiology could become a really exciting prospect.

“He won the 20m (sprint) and jumping at our testing day, which shows the kind of athlete we’re dealing with.”

Long was an emergency for the Vic Metro Under-16 squad in 2019 and will be looking to break into the under-19 squad for this season’s national championships.

The midfield-forward showed plenty of potential playing through the midfield while posing a threat when resting forward.

“Longy is in an interesting space, I know young kids want to develop as midfielders because that’s where the glory is but we had an honest chat after the game and he showed his best impact up forward,” Clarke said.

“He rotated forward from the midfield and showed he can compete in the air and it was a really strong game for him.

“We want him to have a big first three games and then Longy will head off to private school footy with Melbourne Grammar.”

After a scrappy start, the match kicking into gear in the second quarter with both teams booting three goals and the Knights holding a 13-point lead at half-time.

Despite the heat and the Jets already having a game under their belts, the Knights were able to hold firm in a second half arm-wrestle.

Josh Ward, Patrick Dozzi and Ewan Macpherson both finished with 22 disposals while skipper Joel Trudgeon had 20 touches and six tackles.

“The kids, families, supporters and staff are all very happy to see them out playing again, it’s something they’ve all worked so hard for,” Clarke said.

“It was challenging conditions for both teams – 30 degrees in the first hit out back – and Rob Chancellor and I were able to watch the boys play four good quarters of footy.

“Physiologically, it’s a credit to the conditioning staff of both sides, the boys were able to get through four quarters because I thought we’d have players leaving the ground significantly impaired by cramp.”

Parkinson was the only major casualty for the Knights with the big man to have scans on his shoulder this week.

The Knights return to Preston City Oval on Saturday, April 10, for a Round 3 clash against Sandringham Dragons.

NAB League Boys: Sandringham Dragons defeat Oakleigh Chargers at Moorabbin
Nick Daicos, Josh Sinn, Blake Howes and Lachlan Rankin were all prominent in an absorbing match at Moorabbin.

The match promised a lot, and, in the assessment of one recruiter, delivered it and then some.

The Sandringham Dragons won it, coming from behind to defeat region rival Oakleigh Chargers by 16 points in their season-starting NAB League Boys match at Moorabbin today.

The Dragons hit the front for the first time late in the last quarter after energetic small forward Eren Soylemez caught Chargers defender Scott Beilby, who had played on from the kick-out.

The clever Soylemez nailed the set-shot, to the delight of the Dragons supporters thumping the advertising signs on the fence.

Ruckman Jacob Edwards took a strong mark in front and added another to extend the advantage to 11 points.

And the final margin was increased to 11.16 (82) to 10.6 (66) after the final siren, when Tom Blamires put through a long shot.

Teammates swamped him; there had been some heat in the match, and not only because of the warm weather, and the Dragons were chuffed to get the better of an opponent powered by Nick Daicos.

One NAB League watcher appraised the crowd as the biggest he’d seen in the competition outside of a grand final, and many in it were Collingwood supporters who had come to run an eye over Daicos, son of legendary Magpie Peter.

They would have left Moorabbin chuffed with what they saw from the No 3; he cruised around the ground collecting possessions, using them with sure touch and kicking three goals.

What a prospect.

On the Dragons side, Josh Sinn, Campbell Chesser, Blake Howes and Finn Callaghan, all highly rated, had plenty of good moments.

Sinn, Callaghan and Howe were named in the best, alongside Lachlan Riley (son of Bomber), Charlie McKay (son of Andrew) and Dingley’s Lachie Benton.

Callaghan, a left-footer and the son of former Australian Commonwealth Games athlete Brett, was one of the players who gave the Dragons a spark when they needed it.

Kicking with a breeze to the South Rd end, the Chargers slipped away to a four-goal lead in the first quarter, with smooth-mover Lachlan Rankin kicking the first two goals of the game.

Recruiters converged on Moorabbin for the match.

Youseph Dib, given a 50m penalty, and Daicos, from a set-shot, followed up for the Oakleigh team.

Former WA Colts star Logan Young got the Dragons on the board, but Patrick Voss, floating across the goalsquare to mark, answered it, and at quarter time the Chargers enjoyed a 22-point break.

But the Dragons got busy when they had the breeze, Soylemez, Howes and Bentleigh boy Luke Nankervis goaling to all but tie it up at half time.

The third quarter was like the first, the Chargers having the better of it with four goals to two.

But their lead at the last change wasn’t enough, with the Sandringham side rattling home with five goals, Soylemez finishing with three.

Coach Jackson Kornberg told his players after the game that they’d showed “grit’’ and been “ruthless’’ to overhaul an accomplished opponent.

“Boys, we were under siege,’’ he said.

“Cramps left, right and centre, hot day, down by three goals at three-quarter time … to grind it out and to get a result, it’s super, something you should all be proud of.

“As a playing group, to know that we don’t have to win pretty, we can win dirty as well … it’s a great win, boys.’’

Rankin, red of hair and sharp of skill, kicked three goals for the Chargers before limping off in the last quarter.

The match attracted dozens of recruiters, who set up camp on the outer wing with their fold-up chairs and binoculars, pens at the ready.

One of the scouts said at least 15 players involved in the game could be drafted.

Sandringham Dragons 1.3, 4.7, 6.10, 11.16 (82)

Oakleigh Chargers 5.1, 5.3, 9.4, 10.6 (66)

Charlie McKay (Son of Andrew) is a 19 year old and eligible for the mid season draft. He was 3rd BOG for Sandringham on the weekend and has been one of their best in pre-season.

Like Cody Raak (Essendon NGA), he is only F/S eligible for the main draft, if he nominates for the mid season draft he can be taken by anyone.
