Zac taylor i would have loved richmond are killing it but draper and butler are such good value you cant pass them up..both will go round 1 in the real thing...still one player i am very surprised is available and hopefully we get him at our next pick.

Pick 13 Essendon Tyler Sonsie 181cm 76 kg Midfielder Eastern Ranges

Tyler is an inside/ outside midfielder who had a topsy turvy mini season.
However his form as a 16 year old was fantastic and I really liked his game for Box Hill this year- 24 disposals 2 goals and was not fazed by bigger bodies.
Tyler kicks the footy well, is clean under pressure with good decision making skills and has the rare knack of being able to make something happen.

This decision came down to Tyler or Mitch Knevitt. I just feel that Sonsie is too classy to pass up. Knevitt is the big body inside mid that the bombers crave but Sonsie is the better footballer for mine.

Sonsie will begin his career much like Archie Perkins and play that high half forward role and will get some midfield minutes as the season moves on.
ironically I think Perkins might be the big strong young inside mid the bombers can develop.

If Tyler develops he can be a similar player to Trent Cotchin and I think worst case he becomes David Zaharakis who was a good player in his own right.
Alot of good players still left on my draft board cant wait to see who gets to our next pick and you take

We're open amd ready to draft! Please remember to tag the next list manager when you've selected. If you're a spectator remember to be respectful to the selectors

giantroo up with Pick 1, hard choice I know
Since Jase Burgoyne has yet to decide if hes gonna nominate as a father son selection in this draft is he F/S or Open pool

We have 2 picks in the next 4, and 3 players I'd be happy to take for our needs - Roberts, Aleer and Motlop - cannot complain with the available talent left, and just goes to show how even this draft really is when you have players of this quality sliding so far.

With this draft i looked at Richmonds entire list, placed them into def, fwd, mid, ruck etc.
Then ordered them in age, then asterixed the DPP’s.
Then on a field i ordered out Richmond’s best 22 and second 22.

Most of you, or at least Richmond supporters, probably know, without doing all of that what Richmond’s needs would be, but once doing this exercise it glaringly showed those areas of need to develop young players in.
Many players can already play in different positions and that has been a strength of the Richmond side of recent years, being able to plug a hole if need be.
BUT, there are a few areas that need addressing if the age factor and injury start to hit the elderly citizens at Tigerland again.

From there, it showed that Richmond needed a young KPF to develop, a third tall type, a few young small forwards and a ball/clearance winning mid or 2.

My drafting strategy was simple, best available first, then cover areas of need with players that have speed, good decision making skills, and excellent hand and foot skills in play and play team orientated football.

When it comes to defenders there were a few to think about but none, other than Bazzo, that i thought warranted a pick 30 on. If Bazzo lasts till picks 28, 29 and 30 then he would be a perfect get to add another youngster to the back line developing team and if not, the rest are all rookie worthy at best, nothing i would use an early national draft pick on.

Alleer, although he is very athletically gifted and can jump, all he ever does is fly for marks and hit the deck, then take his time trying to find the right option as his disposal and the options he takes are no way near AFL standard.
All the vision i have seen of him show him try for a spectacular mark (granted he takes them too) and crash to the ground then take his sweet time, he could easily fix this, but im not wasting a draft pick on it, considering his disposal and incorrect options that he takes after a mark, late draft pick at best maybe or rookie, as there are others that fit into the Richmond style of play way better especially this early in the national draft.
In THIS draft, Alleer, Pegoraro, Schlensog, and others could develop well, but from a rookie spot from Richmonds point of view in the draft range.

Jye Amiss was my target at 9 as i did not think Hobbs or Ward would make it to 9 and it was too early for a speculative mid choice, but after seeing Ward make it there i pounced, as Tigers do, and made him mine.

After that pick i saw Freo go for NWM and i thought….could Amiss make it to 17.

Alas, Brisbane snatched him up and that left me to go with my pick 17 first choice anyway, Jacob Van Rooyen. He not only fills that KPF role but he will be an added bonus to the coach for his ability to play in defense as well. Almost killing two birds with one stone.

From there i had my other targets, and saw them fall away to others, except Taylor and Murley, and i mentioned in my Howes write up that if Bazzo was available he would have been good value at that 30 pick.

I was always going to go Murley and Taylor with Pick 28 and 29 therefore leaving 1 spot open for best available that suits a need, Howes was that pick.
He can play fwd, wing and his skills could also allow him to explore building his defensive side as well by playing down back. He is so athletically gifted and has such a spring i can envision him playing a Jeremy Howe style defenders game, (no relation, that i know of), or just as that 3rd tall fwd role running up to the wing and linking play back to the big guys or finding space, like he does, and taking marks and kicking goals.

All in all, i was very happy to walk away with that haul for the Richmond faithful, and i hope they agree with the kids i chose, and see that i tried to cover areas of need but also that i got players with exceptional skill, excellent game sense and team orientated players that are not afraid to have a crack, that was the goal, and i think IMO i got who i wanted and filled those needs.

All being said there are definitely still some talented players left on the board and it goes to show that this year bats deep, and unfortunately there will be some disappointed kids at the end of the year.

Thanks Gratees for the use of your images, thanks to PMBangers for organising this again, thanks to AFL Draft Central for some of your write ups that i quoted on a couple of the players, and thanks to the other drafters for being involved.

if allowed would of you made trades

if allowed would of you made trades
If both of Amiss and Van Rooyen were gone by Richmonds pick 17, i would have picked Knevitt at 17, then moved to trade the latter picks or a combo of them to move up to Fremantles pick 19*(21), North;s 20*(22) or Hawthorn's 21*(23) to make sure i got Bazzo at least to cover a need.
That would have netted me, (if they traded) Ward, Knevitt, Bazzo and Taylor.
Leaving 2 spots open to use however.....for Rookie and/or preseason draft or DFa signing and/or mid season draft.

Pick 34 - Leek Alleer
Pick 34 - Geelong - Leek Alleer (Tall Defender/South Australia)

Alleer is the leading mature age prospect this year and for good reason. The athletic freak from South Australia has had an amazing year in the SANFL as an intercepting defender for Central Districts and had some amazing testing numbers at the draft combine. For me he's the second best intercept defender in this draft behind Bazzo, and his athletic profile will make him a force for forwards to deal with. He's also a ready made option and can slot into Geelong's defence from day 1

ALSO CONSIDERED: Brady Hough, Jesse Motlop, Corey Warner

Least it’s somewhat of a mid that’s a positive.

Don’t mind this selection however I’m sure many would want the defender that’s just gone next. Personally I want a mid first though.

They’re not a great deal of KPD quality in this draft and you don’t reach on a player just for the sake of it. A first year key back isn’t going to have much impact on the Sydney list next year anyway. I previously mentioned in another comment that Van rooyen was who I was eyeing off with pick 18, it just so happens that he got taken the pick before.

Hi Smythe

Thank you for the thorough explanation of your rationale and process. If all the other drafters could do likewise and perhaps we can allhave a discussion on how the draft panned out would be great.

It looks like everyone covet JVR from pick 16 onwards. Most likely he will go in the first round then.

Alleer did go the pick after. At least this one is a midfielder, and the next one we can actually fit a need. Just not sure how the club would feel going general defender then a forward-mid but if they felt Long is going to be a genuine mid then he might be the one. Can’t see us going the first one, but as you said your number 1 choice was off the table. I’d expect us to go inside mid at that selection to be honest

I was hoping Aleer lasted until my 3rd pick. Personally I rate Long in the top 25 and he’d sit comfortably in the first round if he hadve been able to play more footy this year, so it wasn’t even a question that I was taking him next. He’ll end up as a midfielder in the long term.

Actually like the Long selection. It’s a midfielder, I doubt we’ll take the one at 19 though more that we have other needs not that I don’t rate the player though. It’s always a tough gig at this range as you are splitting hairs between 20 players

His kicking worries me a tad but i think if a guy is as good at intercept marks as him it makes it worth it and you can surround him with other runners and kickers to help transition the ball out. His ceiling is the highest of any of the talls in this draft i reckon and he fills an obvious need for us by position so good pick

Currently hyperventilating. Can we can the afl and let them know we've sorted it and these guys are coming to the cats?

Recruit Schlensog and Brander as rookies, and Stengle as a DFA, and then end up with these 3...holy hell...that would be some sort of draft (not to mention we still have 2 picks left in a decent range).

So bloody unlikely though, haha
