No, but by the time we are they will have 50-70 games under their belt.

Or they could have 25.
Also seeing a potential young star dominate has implications on other younger players signing on as they can see where the club is heading and want to be part of it. I can guarantee you Butters and Durrsma weren't ready but they backed them in. It's amazing what impact this would have had on all other younger players at their club knowing that if they lift their game to another level in the SANFL they will also get opportunity. We btw wouldn't have played Butters or Durrsma likely until their third season in which case they would have been at a different club.

Is Ben Davis injured?

The Age thinks he is but I’ve seen no mention from the club?

Both Jack Watts, and Justin Koschitzke were played R1 after their Draft Year, for no other reason than Membership Drives ....... clearly were not ready & their careers impacted

Now that's all arguable .....but what's the rush, are we likely to be a Top 8 contender this year ......hardly
So take it on a case by case basis?

Hawks weren't top 8 contenders either.

I'd want to back our recruiting team far more than we do.

If the experts we've hired at the club to recruit players say a player is in the top handful of players worth picking, then you should ******* play them and put them in the role we've assessed them to be good at

And if the experts we've hired aren't good enough to be making those assessments then why have we hired them?
You do realise when draftees are drafted it's not about where they see them in their 1st season of AFL it's mostly about projecting where they'll be in 3 or 4 years...

Tom Doedee is a fine example, Tom had virtually only played one year of top level junior football having basically concentrated on basketball until then apart from kick to kick with mates and a few games of school footy for St. Joey's College. He was picked on future potential very similar to our Brayden Cook this last draft.

One size does not fit all with new draftees.

Of course.

But do you think we pay any attention to these projections?

How many times has Hamish told us how a guy is an in and out midfielder, only for us to play him forward pocket? Then Hamish gets on a podcast and sounds frustrated about lack of senior opportunities and being played out of position

And all those carrying on about Tom Doedee not being played earlier than he was obviously didn't pay attention to his kicking which was to put it mildly nowhere near AFL standard and it took some serious work by both Tom and our coaches to get it to where he is today.

Didn't a certain poster say Doedee was the worse pick of all time & couldn't get a game .....who was that :D

Exactly

Use the softly, softly approach Hawthorn used with Roughead and Franklin who they wanted to build their forward line around.

Patience. No hurry.

have had a look at what the hawks did in 2005 after their star studded draft haul in 2004, they were back in finals in 2007 and won a flag in 2008.

buddy debut round 1 and 20 games
Rough debut round 3 and 16 games
Lewis debut round 3 and 19 games

Do I detect the hint of a smile breaking on Fisch's face? :)

Didn’t help himself that he chose to stay in schoolboy footy for an extra year and not pit himself against bigger bodies
Danger stayed in Vic after being drafted, didn't harm him.

Melbourne tried making him the #1 KPF in an absolute garbage team, it's a cautionary tale although RT is better equipped

We were playing Jake Kelly instead of Doedee

And at the time Jake Kelly was in his 4th season and on 10 games...

Kelly did exactly what you want a lesser player to do, when gifted an opportunity (noting Doedee was injured at the start of 2017), to take it with both hands and bury the more highly rated opponent. If you believe this is prioritising a mediocre experienced player over a talented youth, you really need to google what experienced means.

You have much better examples too boot at this club too. Exhibit: Thompson one year off retirement over Lyons, Lynch/Jenkins over Fogarty, Douglas over Gallucci etc.
