Kicked 5 on me in a half while proceeding to tell me he got home at siix am still hung over, I got moved he went on to kick 10 I think for the day😂
I played on him as well, but I was just a fetus, so in retrospect it was an odd selection choice for a KPD and potentially a violation of safety standards.

A different era.

Lifted from "The Footy Almanac"

.

There are plenty of other funny anecdotes on the site but the following paragraphs are an insight to his early career.

Grenville Dietrich: The Man, The Myth, The Legend
Grenville Dietrich, what a character, but I wish to highlight also what a sensational footballer. He was blisteringly quick off the mark on a lead. Grenville is the second highest goal scorer in North Adelaide Football history and also third in SANFL history re. kicking 10 goals in a game or more nine times, only ranking behind the footy equivalent of Don Bradman, the immortal Ken Farmer and Bruce Schultz.

Back to the beginning. Grenville grew up in Mildura, playing A grade footy at the age of 15. Grenville also represented Victoria in the victorious Victorian Teal Cup side in 1977 and was rewarded with All-Australian selection at Centre Half Forward with such players as Roger Merrett, Doug Hawkins, Mark Bos, Glen Hawker, Justin Madden and Neale Daniher just to name a few; it was truly a fantastic side. Grenville came down to play for Richmond in ’78 but unfortunately did serious damage to his ankle ligaments during his brief time at Punt Rd. Grenville also lived with Kevin Sheedy and remains friends to this day and a huge supporter of the Tigers.

Grenville returned to Mildura and in 1979 was actually recruited by Central District. Following a trial game at the Ponderosa, he got in to an altercation with a supporter in the toilet and in Grenville’s own words there was a fair bit of claret spilt, not much of it his own, and unfortunately he had a white shirt which highlighted the drama. He was summoned to a meeting in Kris Grant’s office on the Monday morning and given a bus ticket back to Mildura (remarkably, Kris Grant is still working for Centrals today, be interesting to know if he is the longest current serving official).

So back to Mildura, where he was eventually spotted by David Kearns and recruited by North Adelaide, making his debut in 1982 against South Adelaide playing at CHF (don’t think Grenville ventured out to CHF that often during his career!). Grenville made his name as a full forward and is the only player, in 1983 and 1984, to kick over 100 goals in a season consecutively but not never win the Ken Farmer award (leading goal kicker in the SANFL). (Rick Davies did kick 151 in 1983, a league record).

Grenville had a reasonably consistent year in 1985, kicking 70 plus goals, played in the second semi final only for Mick Nunan to suspend him for missing a Friday night training session (Grenville thought it wasn’t compulsory). North Adelaide supporters will always wonder what if re. the ’85 season.

I always liked the story that after training he’d ride home on his bike, pick up a pizza on the way, balance the box on the handle bars and eat it while he was riding along!
There was a story that Grenville was out late one night and didn’t have taxi fare home so he went into a pizza shop and ordered a home delivery, then jumped in the car with his pizza and was chauffeured home for cheaper than a taxi.

We certainly should not be shying away from small forwards in the back end of next draft.

You are right on the money. I wouldn’t be unhappy with us taking a quality small forward in the first round. Or even swap it for Rankine.

If we can get a player close to the quality of Betts, I’d be ecstatic! What he did for this club should never be underestimated. Was so exciting going to AO every 2nd week with him playing and you always felt we were a chance in any game because of his x-factor.

1 or 2 quality small forwards under the feet of Fog, Berg, Thilthorpe and maybe McAsey for the next 10 years is a must.

We actually wasted the years we had Tippett without a quality small forward. Tippett never got out marked and if we had Betts under his feet we would of won a lot more games.
Just hope history doesn’t repeat itself and we waste the next 10 years playing average small forwards.

Murphy is a pretty safe best 22 at this point in time, the joys of being a specialist player.

Not a lot of options to overtake him either. Newchurch perhaps? Best case there is probably midseason (ala how Cameron ended Petrenkos career) though, but there is a fair bit of work to do from where he was at in 2020.

Murphy and Kelly were the only senior types genuinely dropped last year. Mrouch was for 1 week, but I think that was more a wake up call. I don't think Murphy is safe at all, I think they know they need to do better than him.

Oh no you’re still going on with this stuff ..... pick your top 28-30 players from our list then check how many haven’t played yet or have played less than 20 games

plenty of debuts and youth on the cards

Thilthorpe Berry Pedlar Rowe all likely to get multiple games...... even a Gollant debut wouldn’t surprise me

cook needs to build his body and has been injured so might not be until next year

murray is a chance to get listed and play regularly

guys with less than 20 games to feature regularly include McPherson Shoenberg Mcasey Hamill Scholl Hately Jones and possibly McHenry and Butts

so tipping 5 debutants and more games into at least 6 inexperienced guys ( not including Davis )

I just repeated something I heard on AA, it wasn't a personal opinion. It was backed up a few posts later by someone else who heard the same thing and by another who heard it but thought he may have been referring to round 1 only. I qualified it in 2 other posts saying it was only a Rowie opinion based on something he heard Nicks say, not something I heard myself. I didn't bother reading beyond your first sentence, I would presume everything you posted is also purely wrong or plain wishful thinking.

I think someone thinking they heard Rowe say something like this isn't really the same as Nicks saying it.

Which I qualified very clearly in 2 subsequent posts. And I wasn't the only one that heard it said. * people love to read s**t into posts, I passed on my recollection from a sentence from Rowie to provide context to some of the discussions. Nothing more, nothing less. It wasn't a long discussion, so I and treeman could be off, but I do now remember Pembo coming across a bit disappointed with what Rowie said or framing the question in that manner. Either way he said something of the ilk, I don't get emotional about, weird so many do. It will be what it will be and we Dan argue it ad nauseam in the changes threads.

I heard Rowie say that yesterday with Dave and Will.
I can't see it being true, if it is, it's a worry. You would want at least 3 or the draftees having some sort of decent go this year.
Not the round 22 or 23 job either.

I'm pretty sure that was about being selected for Round 1

Betts was a rookie, they can be found everywhere.

We aren't getting Rankine so people here need to stop dreaming.

In modern footy, saying definitively that we are or are not getting anyone before the paperwork is lodged is a fast way to looking very very silly. A Rankine trade why admittedly unlikely, is in no way an impossibility.

And is certainly not the hill I would be willing to die on!

I'm willing to say it definitely won't happen this year.

In future it absolutely could, but not this year.

Advertiser reporting we're in active negotiations with Shane McAdam and trying to get him signed up prior to the season starting, hoping to get it done in the next fortnight.

Murph is one of those players who often looks on the verge of being dropped and pulls out a 2 or 3 goal game and keeps surviving. He also seems to be one of the few forwards we have who attempts to apply defensive pressure (even if he is limited by is size).

Our declaration that we will not be debuting any players this year is an “Ongoing Concern” (still waiting for your response to the auditors O.C.).

I think it is imperative that we find anything said by someone who heard something from someone at the AFC that can be given a negative spin and start yelling at the moon. Keep the bastards honest, I say!

I can’t wait for the internal trial on Saturday. If the Blue team has a BIG win and Chase kicks a bag of goals the usual suspects will declare
1) We have no depth
2) Why can’t we find a decent small defender 🙄
