On our shopping list this year are a few things.

1. A youngish but best 22 KPD.
2. A developing ruck (dependent on Hunter’s season)
3. A star mid.

You have to remember that we are getting a hell of a lot of money off the books this year. Carlisle, Dunstan, Geary, Roberton will all be gone plus youcould possibly throw in Ross and Webster. Also we only have next year of Hanners shocking contract to pay as he can’t reach his trigger for the fifth season now which is a huge relief.
I think we will be already into the ear of a couple of mids, we think we are just a couple of pieces short of really contending hard.

Is the mention of Ross based on anything you know or just a stab in the dark?

We've been a better "team" with him around. Saints have had alot worse contracts than his. Fact is, when we are a flag threat, he will be wound down. Better paying him big coin than most of the others on the list when we got hin

Yeah I don’t buy this. We’ve paid him nearly $2M for 13 games. No amount of jokes around the locker room is worth that.
We need to just own that it was a shit trade, but we’ve got nearly every other one right since then.

Watching Caldwell the other night made me more disappointed we missed out on him.

Looking at our side now though I can understand his decision to choose Essendon. Our midfield depth is as good as anyones.

The Crouch decision most likely spooked him. Crouch cost us nothing in draft picks so we can't complain. It's going to be interesting watching his career though as it's top end talent in the midfield that we need.

Purely in terms of playing, yes, but he was the first big name signing, then came the five, then last year. He was an instigator IMO and the season is yet to start so wont write him off yet.

Do the mid's names rhyme with Mac Zerret and Kosh Jelly?

What would he cost though?
Taranto would be great , but telling the truth with Steele , Crouch , Hunter Clark , Gresham most of the midfield time would be used up by these guys then throw in Jones , Higgins , Sinclair and Bytel really I would attempt to find a young key defender.

It just shows how brillant the Howard trade was , being able to pick up Howard was a masterstroke by our recruiters - finding AFL quality key defenders is as hard as finding key forwards and we were able to pull off both with King and Howard.

Kane Cornes was absolutely bleeding when he was traded to us hahaha

People are over estimating how much we would have in our salary cap at the end of the season. Of those mentioned above, Carlisle and Geary would be on very little. Dunstan on an average amount and Robbo's contract was likely front loaded considering on when he signed it.

Doubt we have the money to be going around throwing it at another Free Agent midfielder when that's far form our biggest need right now.

If we’d traded-in Caldwell then I doubt we would’ve been able to trade for Jack Higgins. We wouldn’t have had the draft capital to get it done.

It’s an interesting one. I think Caldwell will be a very good player, but I’m pleased with what I’ve seen of Higgins. He’s going to be a dynamic player for us and he seems to love the club.

It could be one of those scenarios where both players are good for us but we couldn’t have them both.

“Very little”. Geary is on $500K, Carlisle is on $300K, Dunstan $400K and Robbo will make nearly $700K (its complex though as he gets an injury lump sum payment as well). Throw in Webster $400K, Ross $600K and it’s easy to see how we will in fact have a lot of spare money if some of those players leave. Obviously we need to keep in mind that we have a few coming out of contract too that will eat up a chunk of money.

Geary is not on 500k

Can't see why we couldn't have got Caldwell and Higgins tbh.

We still had a first rounder in the draft after the Higgins trade.

Think it was more to do with what he wanted rather than how we could get it done.

In the end we got a mature big bodied mid that can come in and help us compete now and he didn't cost us a draft pick so I'm not complaining.
