Compare Pioneers players to the players coming out of the Swans academy. Multiple players ready to contribute in their first year. Well developed.

Strange comparison though.

Most draftees have no idea what program they are joining

Swans academy players are introduced to the gamestyle 2-3 years before being drafted

Doubt Sheezel gets to *. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him go to Norf at 1 (or 2).

However, Suns might come into play... Sheezel would really suit them, with Rankine heading home. And Norf may be willing to trade down (in fact have said they would consider offers). Suns also want future picks for their bounty draft next year.

So...
Rankine (Suns) -> Adelaide
Pick 5 (Adelaide) -> Suns
Pick 1 + Future 2 (Norf) -> Suns
Pick 5 + 7 (Suns) -> Norf

New draft order:
1. Suns -> Ashcroft (matched), Sheezel
2. WCE -> Wardlaw
3. GWS -> Tsatas
4. * -> Clark/Philipou/Humphrey
5. Norf -> Cadman
6. Hawks -> ?
7. Norf -> Busslinger

Gives Norf a chance then to pick up some bookends - Busslinger & Cadman, which would prob suit them better than a mid. And gives the Suns an extra 2nd round pick next year.

I think given our list needs and where our first pick falls we need to consider taking a forward/midfielder type with that first pick.

It sounds like getting Sheezel is going to be tough and Brayden George’s knee injury puts a dark cloud over us selecting him.

Bailey Humphrey gets mentioned but I havent seen much of much of him as he was injured for the Under 18s carnival.

Does anyone have a view on if he is any good?

That's a whole different scenario and you can't compare the two...
Compare Pioneers against other NAB league teams, they will probably still fall short...

Swans academy teach their players how to play the Sydney way...
When they are drafted they are mostly ready to go in the Sydney environment...

Sydney bitch about COLA, yet they have the biggest leg up over the competition here...

Inside mid, that is a strong mark when forward. The concern is with his kicking

What do you see us doing selection wise etc

Like Arrow said, hard to say... we could do with a developing tall defender or tall forward. Immediate need for outside mid, forward/ruck, dynamic mid/fwd. But depends what happens with list before the draft.

Options by position (some overlaps, but this is close):
Tall Defenders: Busslinger, Hayes
Mid-tall Defenders: Weddle
Midfield/Defender: Hustwaite, Ginbey
Inside Mid: Szybkowski
Outside Mid: Hollands, Hotton
Midfield/Forward: Phillipou, Hewett, Mackenzie, Humphrey
Mid/Small Forward: George
Tall Forwards: Cadman, Jefferson
Forward/Ruck: Keeler
Ruck: Barnett

That's 16 players, most will fall between say pick 6 and pick 20 or so.

There are others, but most others would be targets for 2nd round.

Think Barnett will be a Ben Miller type at the next level, play anywhere down the spine

Irrespective of strategies and endlessly speculation.
What we need is shrewd & competent Trade / Draft plan going forward.
No more wasted picks and years, enough.
In Austin we trust, let’s keep our fingers crossed

Until we get through the trade period, hard to get a real feel for our draft strategy

Still think we will go a KPP, moreso defender and outside run/footskills as a priority
I would guess that KPD and then mid prospects. Maybe a half back runner given our stocks there skew older

Who are the best kicks in this draft? Who are the players who can claim the corridor with their disposal in this draft?
Who among those players have speed and can carry the football?
They are the players Carlton require

Sholl would help address the first, both in the short and longer term given his age. If we go that route, I'd also be happy to add one or both of Acres/Phillips depending on cost. Go from Cottrell and LOB on the wings, to Acres and Sholl, with Phillips/Cottrell and LOB as the depth for each wing.

Leaves our first pick to address the midfield pace issue - find the Bailey Smith type who will tuck the ball under his arm, gain 20m of territory and then kick long to a forward's advantage. Bailey Humphrey reminds me quite a bit of Smith, a bit shorter on endurance though so he's maybe more of a burst mid than a permanent one. Next closest options around our pick would be Hewett or Mackenzie I think. Whoever we take here I'd hope we have a plan to integrate them into the seniors sooner rather than later though - someone with a bit of forward craft would be ideal so they can rotate off a forward flank.

Or we look at a tall, though I'll die on the hill of taking a late prospect tall rather than using an early pick.

Trade for wings, first pick on a quick contested mid type who can kick to a forward's advantage while on the run, later picks on best available with an eye out for an aggressive raw tall who can develop their craft in the ressies.

Phillips is getting delisted by Hawthorn. Buyer beware.
