Here's a question. Would you prefer:
- One of Phillipou, Humphries, Clarke, Busslinger & One of Hayes, Keeler, Charlie Clarke, Hustwaite (Keep Pick 8 & Amon Compo)

OR

- One of Brayden George, Hewett, Hollands, Jefferson & Two of Hayes, Keeler, Charlie Clarke, Hustwaite (Split 8 into a late first & an early second + Amon Compo)

*Assuming we get ~26 for Amon and keep it

I think I would prefer George, Keeler & Hayes to Humphries & Hayes, for example.

I'd want option 1.

Option 2 isn't a horrible idea, but I just look at our top 10 picks since 2011... there's only been three. And we've nailed all of them:

2011 - Chad Wingard, 2 x AA
2012 - Ollie Wines, 1 x AA, Brownlow medallist
2018 - Connor Rozee, 1 x AA

Top 10 might sound like an arbitrary number, but we've only had the three in that timeframe and only one in 10 years. We're not a perennial contender that can keep topping up and don't need top 10 draft picks, so I think if we have the opportunity, we hold on to it - and Geoff Parker knows his top-end talent.

Personally don’t give up too 10 picks. This isn’t 1998 and those kids taken 13-80 are magic beans. Take the top end talent over 3 maybes.

I know I ain't directly answer your question but here are my thoughts:

1st Choice: Draft Phillipou or Humphrey using Pick 8, with pick 26 I'd go with Charlie Clarke, and James Van Es with pick 53 (we may need to trade up to mid 40s)
2nd Choice (if neiher Phillipou and Humphrey are available): Move on pick 8 and Amon compo for 2 firsts (and a 3rd rounder or am I too optimistic?), pick Hollands and Brayden George with the 2 firsts.

For me, this is a draft that we might look back in 5 years to say that there were some steals. If Amon compo is pick 27, I wouldnt mind us giving that away for a few picks in the 30s and 40s. Suns have 31,34,43,52 which I am keen on to swap for 27 and 56. They wont be using all those picks given their salary cap issues and this draft is even after pick 20. If we can unearth even 1 or 2 gems using those would be great. Suns would then have pick 5,7, 25 and 27

I'd be having a look Kobe Ryan, Van Es, Dowling, D'Aloia, Darcy Jones with those plethora of 2nd and 3rd round picks.

The first option by a mile IMO.
The latest ESPN draft has:
6. Adelaide - Jhye Clark
7. Hawthorn - Cameron Mackenzie
8. Gold Coast - Mattaes Phillipou
9. Port Adelaide - Jedd Busslinger

GC will trade out Pick 7 (8 after somone bids on Ashcroft) for their salary dump; alas for us, they will get Pick 6 from the Crows (for Rankine).
Who know if the earlier pick precipitates them changing their selection

not kobe, hes just more of the same that we have plenty of

In what way? Kobe is a genuinely good midfielder both inside and out, hard at the ball but also good at the spread and can kick goals.

Jakob is a rebounding half back, which is definitely something we have plenty of. He's very good though.

Edit: I get attached to players I like, so I'm probably biased, but I think Kobe Ryan has a very big future at AFL level. Here's a highlights vid uploaded by the SANFL yesterday:

Is Luke Parker a good comparison? Just does everything well without being elite at any one thing?

shit id be all over him if he was luke parker like

i see him as an outside wingman/half back, and i think we have enough of those at the moment.

Dursma could barely get a game and i think X is a much better prospect

as a side note - he does have a couple of younger brothers who are guns (maybe better) and a sister who might be better than them all

That's not a good highlights tape. Would want to see a better one than that. Looks like a late/rookie pick there.

What exactly didn't you like about this highlights tape that came from one game of his season?
I understand that's only one game. I'm only saying that specific tape wasn't impressive and I'd want to see another.

I can't see anything to do with his speed or marking in it. His ball use looks pretty poor with a few of the clearance kicks where he's just slammed it on the boot. He's clearly got some ok vision, and gets out a couple nice handballs but that's about all that video shows. The rest shows a kid that is very small and likely not suited for that inside mid role at AFL level, a lot of flat footed stuff in the clearances, no bursting out/breakaway stuff, evasion or other exciting movement around the contest.

As I said, I'm just talking about that single video. I'm not saying he isn't better than that, he may well have some incredibly exciting highlights in other videos, I'd just want to see them to think of him as anything other than a late/rookie pick type from those highlights.

This board and people in general gotta stop focusing on what players can't do and focus on what they can do. We look for a player to have every skill which isn't possible. Picks you use after 30 are to be for role players and the premiership teams normally have a fair few solid role players whereas our club barely has any

I think it's pretty severe to jump straight to late/rookie pick just from that though.

It's an 18 year old who hasn't come close to being fully developed physically yet, playing SANFL reserves in the finals against players older than him, being best on ground with the most disposals and a fantastic goal, laying 9 tackles and getting 8 clearances. Sure, he might have "thrown it on the boot", but sometimes that actually is the best option and was in those highlights. They always went to at the very least a contest and those quick hands he fired out (which were incredibly clean in all situations) always went to a player in a better position than himself. Quick decision-making, neat kick and a willing tackler. I was just shocked anyone saw negatives in that video at all. Especially starting off with a goal off a sidestep from 40 on an angle.

He may very well end up being a late/rookie pick, draft boards have him all over the place, but he couldn't have done much more performance-wise this year and I'd be stoked to pick him up.

Good post Honeyboy. This is what this thread is all about. I remember I liked a kid called Cooper Sharman a few years back and I think Maaca didn’t mind him either. We didn’t take him but he eventually got to StKilda and while he isn’t a world beater he is playing some AFL.
It actually gives you an interest outside of just watching Port.
Might be a bit of fun for Posters to tell us the players they rated that others might not have that have played AFL.
It will be a bit of a change to post and read something positive on this board.
Macca who is your best Roughie that you picked?

And fair enough, its all in the eye of the beholder. I would want to see more to form a solid judgement. I more didn't see many positives personally other than the quick handball vision, but as I said, that's mainly just because it is a singular video and I don't think it's a very complementary one.

I may have been looking at the wrong player but I saw a player with quick hands that feed to a team mate in space, bombs from congestion to advantage of his team. Tacked well without getting into their back causing either a turnover or a free kick.
The highlights from one game look better than some of the first round possibilities. I know there would be deficiencies not shown, but could be a great pick up.

To go further, look at Parker’s success rate with first rounders

Rozee, butters, Georgiades, duursma, Bergman, sinn, jones, Spp, Marshall.

I would say that’s an amazing success rate. There’s not a bust there imo even tho I think pick 16 was a bit early for jones but a bid dictated that.

Ryan would be a great get if hes there with the Amon pick
Which Ryan?

Jakob ryan or Josh Weddle btw? Very similar players from my viewing tho Weddle is taller and might be close to an actual key defender height now?

I’m pretty keen on Weddle at the right pick.
