Dow - getting a hard tag, still playing fairly well in scrappy conditions, getting back in defence to help out, liked what I saw, wasn't as prolific but again, hard tag on a wet scrappy night. He certainly can play forward a bit, I think if he gets a run at AFL level he should get a run up forward for stints and in the middle. Won't get tagged at AFL level.

Pittonet - Looked like that much bigger kid in the under 12s absolutely dominating the ruck. Looks like he could come back in.

Kemp - Scrappy conditions aren't his conditions. He peels off well to receive, he played pretty well, think he would be much better at AFL level and could come in to play third or fourth tall next week if needed.

Stocker - Played ok, nothing special, kicking not very good, fumbled a bit, didn't do much to suggest he should be in the AFL side. The one good thing he did was try and generate some run and receive the footy on the rebound a little.

Durdin - Good player to have on our list, really solid defender, very neat and tidy with the ball in hand.

Mirkov - If he starts taking marks he will play AFL.

Marchbank - Looked a level above, used it well, took marks in difficult conditions, reads the game well. Should play AFL next week if he pulls up ok.

Akuei - Playing full forward. I like it, see what he can do attacking the footy, took a really nice mark.

Cincotta - Doing what our AFL listed players like Stocker and Kemp should be doing, hard running, linking up, gee he looked good. Impressed me with his game, pretty close to BOG.

Cincotta is a beast, definite AFL potential.

Strong body, I think he would be a fantastic utility to have on the list (would be a cheap option to replace Newnes in that sense, higher ceiling too).
Moves like a small but he’s 186cm.
Looks hard, fast and smart.

Could do worse.

Another really unheralded VFL player who I think would make it at AFL level.

Zavier Mahar - gets telling possessions in an area of play where most wouldn't (freakish X factor without the fanfare)
you can't teach that strength. He's a natural footballer, who can get low possessions and still really hurt the opposition.

Of course things can change in the landscape of afl. But I've been told he is very invested in our club and is wanting to get the best out of himself
I've been told "I've been told" doesn't much hold water as a source. Please don't quote me, it's just what I've been told.

Do you think he kicks poorly?

Don’t want to be negative Nelly but I’m not with you on Marchy. Felt he was average. Doesn’t mean I think he can’t play or that I’m negative about him. He just didn’t impress much. His smarts got him the ball but he didn’t move amazingly well, didn’t jump, wasn’t third man up intercepting much. Was a bit of a meh game I think.

Strongly doubt he’s in next week unless injuires force it.

Watched the game again

Dow - Good to see they are trying to use Dow as a balanced mid, rather than pure stoppage. Wasn't tagged any more than our other mids, moreso a GWS strategy given they were undermanned in the ruck and all of their mids were playing defensive first. I thought it was Dow's best game for the year due to a number of reasons. Showed more urgency defensively a number of times, timing his spreads from a contest better, used better options, showing more composure and placed some good blocks for teammates. Like to see him demand the handball receive more, but apart from that, was a really good game

Stocker, Marchbank, Kemp, Durdin - All did what they had to do as a defensive unit, without too much concern. I hope Durdin remains on the list, really decent backup

Pitto, Mirkov - Would like to see them more involved around the ground and in open play, but that has never really been a strength of Pitto's game and Mirkov is still developing

Arkuei - Been calling for him to be played as a forward for awhile and the last 2 weeks show that there is something to work with. Thought he was good considering the conditions, although I would hope he plays in front more as he is dangerous, rather than playing from behind as often, looking to take mark of the year

I would call up Pitto next week, none of the others would force selection unless there is an injury

I saw him intercept quite a bit. I thought his aerial game was particularly good, especially considering it was a wet ugly game and no one was marking the ball particularly well.

Cincotta has been a bankable strength all year. We are oversubscribed for small/medium defenders, but if we were to somehow lose one, he would be a great addition to the senior list. Looked like he played higher up the ground at times last night, wing trial maybe? We have spent the season shuffling our wing options and developing players at both levels during the season. Solutions may be under our nose.

Edit: Cincotta has been obsessed with making it to the AFL, hope he gets there.
There's a lot players like him in the state leagues, and I think there's still a few I rank above him, but we have our pick of them in the DFA period.

The GWS ruckman went down in the 1st(?) quarter so he and Mirkov had a field day. Got the taps and also got involved in general play. Honestly no point in giving him another VFL game, needs to come straight in.
Knee stability remains an issue, he needs to get that better before he plays, but that will be assessed through the week.

Bingo, Maher has horrendous kicking while on the run.

I hope Trudgeon gets picked up at some stage. Love the way he plays. Still only 20 years old.
Kept an eye on him and he is one I love the sound of. Could be the George Hewitt Kmart version from what I hear. Any more info on how he is going from a closer watcher?

there are better prospects

Not many of them will tackle and apply pressure like Joel. He has a toughness that you can’t teach.
yep he has some good qualities but like Hayes - needs a fair amount of polish to be applied - the bloke I nominated in the match thread has definite AFL qualities

Close VFL watchers: is Dow a sneaky chance for the Liston if he can’t break into the seniors or nah?

Dawson (Southport), Woodcock (Southport), Dow and Mathieson would be the 4 in contention. Given Mathieson is in the lions senior side atm he is looking less likely.
