Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

Surely Nicks is quietly seething with the incompetence of Reid and co. Next year is make or break for his coaching career and he has lost 2 quality senior players who would have helped him make the 8. None of Burgess or the handful of picks will make any difference to the 2024 end result.

at least give Nicks until at least R5 next year before declaring him a dead man Walking.

we didn’t target Oliver, he reached out to Burgess and we were getting our house in order if Oliver decided to pull the plug on Melb

that is a very different situation

You said those on long term deals, so you included Oliver. So whether we targeted him or not, he’s a player you’ve included who we tried to get.

Do you have a list of the players we should have targeted? I guess we could have got Chol. Who was a target. The club failed in that. After all, all they had to do was to offer him a 6 year deal at $800k per year. I'm sure that would have convinced him. One other failure we can attribute to the club.
There are no players in the AFL we should have targeted, none.

Rubbish comment. Surely Nicks was involved in the signing of the current contracted young players. He must have seen enough of them on the field and at practice to see that they have natural improvement going into 2024. We have currently 1 list spot for a draft pick so there will have to be some creative work done to somehow open up another 2 list spots before the draft night as we must nit waster the 3 picks we have. I do not know how they do that whether long term injured can be somehow taken off the active list or contracted players moved to the rookie list or even delisting contracted players. They will get it done somehow! The other problem is contracting Borlase. Can he be further rookies again?

According to Wayne, if they are contracted with multiple years they are the only players worth going for

I think everyone who says something as bone jarringly asinine “show me who was available” should sentenced to 7 weeks hard labour reading the collective wisdom of ABAB translated into Swahili

I know, we chose to target players with 2 or more years on their contracts, do you consider that a wise choice?

Later in the piece. Initially it was Day and Redman. Really disappointed we could land Day in the end. Word I had late in the season was we had tried other “ A” or near A grade mids but all were ungettable - but we saw this as the key area. That seemed to change late I. The year due to injuries to KPD in Cox and then Petty

It does seem like majority of gun players are contracted years out at the moment. Whether clubs got ahead of the CBA or concerned about draft quality following Covid, most have been signed up to long term contracts. Majority of clubs aren’t running with many list spots available

Bugger off mate. At least give the guys a chance. Plenty of improvement to come from a Rachele and Pedlar in particular. Those two alone could move the needle enough

happy that we have kept our draft hand as you build premiership squads through the draft and add cream like Dawson and Izak through the trade period

there was not much cream requesting trades in 2023, just fringe and role players being over priced by clubs

now looking forward to the draft and seeing the improvement in Pedlar, Rachele, Izak, Sig, Max, Worrell, RT, Fog, Butts and hopefully players like Zac Taylor

There are some decent and cheaper options next year for midfield options. Sparrow, Phillipou and Powell all out of contract, hopefully land at least one of those 3, preferably out of the first two. Cumming as a FA to add some class.

Connor Nash as a left field option as a big bodied mid is someone else worth putting a 4 year contract in front of and see if you can lure out of the Hawks. Unlikely, but worth a shot.

If Nicks can't make the 8 with our current squad in 2024 he doesn't deserve to be in the job.

Not too concerned we missed out on Petty as don't see him as a priority with the picks we needed to give up given he contracted.

Would have liked us to bring in another experienced played with 2 outs. Imo we should have shown more interest in Billings as went cheap & area of need.

Probably upgrade draft picks prior to draft.
