Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Isn't Kuek contracted for 2024 now? Thought they announced it when he did the ACL.
You’d have to delist someone. Have them train by themselves till the SPP period starts when Kuek can be placed on the LTI list and then that player who was delisted takes his spot back in the squad.
Kuek won’t play at all in 2024.

Not disagreeing with you but I don’t think we can afford to only have 3 or 4 new players on the list next year.
Over the course of the season our depth has been severely exposed compared to the best sides.
For example, I would keep hamling around for the next year ahead of all the following players if I had a choice:
Corbett
Emmett
Banfield
Hughes

And probably Kuek and Worner too, though to be fair both these guys are unproven.

Unfortunately for Joel, the club chose to contract all those guys beyond 2023. That’s a separate debate and was a mistake IMO to give all of them a contract to 2024, though I accept we had to give some of them new deals. When the club gives out multi year deals to guys that are in their mid 20s and still only the 30th best player on the list - you find yourself in these situations.

We need to take 4 new players in the national draft in my opinion.
We will lose
Colyer
Benning
Wilson

All for certain.
Then we have to add both Banfield and Treacy to the main list from the RL as they are both contracted for 2024 and cannot be rookies.

That leaves one place in the ND. We can delist hamling like you suggest and re rookie him - that would make 2 main list spots.
Then possibly someone like Corbett could be delisted but we are obliged to re rookie him - that makes a 3rd list spot free in the ND.
We would have to pass on the north Melbourne 4th rounder in the ND.
We would also be passing on all our rookie draft picks for any new players - for the first time in history.

Of course of Henry moves or Sturt, that Could free up a 4th or 5th list spot. But we don’t want that do we?

That’s also not accounting for ANY new arrivals via trade or FA, such as Jeremy Sharp or anyone else.

I don’t think it’s realistic.

Good summary.
Sturt, Henry, Hamling, Wilson, Colyer, Benning , Williams, and Stanley out of contract.
I feel when bottom 6 you should be drafting 5 or 6 people a year in search of A graders and B graders.

We have too many c graders on our list

Hamling should be offered another year. Pearce, Cox or Ryan are very unlikely to play every game. Possible that at least one of those will miss multiple games. Hamling has shown he is back to AFL quality and is great depth. He is 30 years old but looks to have another 2 years in him. Even the mob up the road would welcome a good defender for a few years until they can develop one.

Sturt was fine. Wouldn’t lose any sleep if he went elsewhere. I’d be happy to keep him if it was a contract friendly to us.
We finally start to play guys who are forwards, Sturt, Corbett were good.
I’d be keeping these guys, and for their ages haven’t played alot of AFL.
Sure we need to look at small forwards, but the medium tall depth is ok.

Wagner is another feel good story, we have found some players this year.
Colyer, Wilson and Benning are the obvious outs.
Henry leaving would be disappointing, and the 4th out but regardless we have
proven that we can develop players and are a destination club for second
Or even third chances.
Young to the centre, with Jackson and that midfield is looking so much better.

We need to turnover at least 5 players right?

AFL rules say three but I’d say five is closer to sustainable list management. You can take less picks in the National Draft by upgrading rookies but ultimately by upgrading rookies you’re freeing up a spot on the rookie list and most likely drafting another player in the rookie draft.

As said by other posters it’d be a strange year to make minimal changes but it’d also be strange to 2-3 of the players we currently have out of contract. This club also barely ever pays out contracts. Something has got to give here and atm I’m not quite sure what it is.

Reidy
Conrad Williams
Colyer
Wilson
Benning

Hamling and Sturt are 50/50 at this point.

Reckon we retain Reidy if we trade Darcy. I think we convert Darcy into a first and a quality mid. He doesn’t have the aerobic capacity and taps to no one. Cash in while the currency is high.

Williams is a Category B rookie.

Firstly he wouldn’t count towards the five players. Secondly he’s got some very good attributes that I doubt we’ll find from a Category B rookie prospect so we might as well keep him.

I wouldn’t delist Reidy either. We need that back up ruck on the list and for me he’s shown enough that I think we’d find it hard to find anyone better in the state leagues.

Personally I still think Hamling is in a lot of trouble tbh.

It’s aggressive list management but Collingwood seem fine without Grundy!

Eagles won a premiership with a couple of spud rucks in 2018.

Everyone knows it’s the right thing to do, especially as Treacy is holding his own as a back up ruck.

He I agree and I think going by Jlo hugs etc it may of been his last game possibly. He has performed admirably though. Cox will be back soon though.

Corbett will be delisted (and rookied for forms sake presumably). If Hamling is retained it will also be on the RL. That's five ML spots without Henry or Sturt leaving plus a LTI for Kuek frees an additional rookie spot.
Need Brodie to get fit and get back in the team for the last 2 or 3 games and let him run one way all game getting 40 touches so we can hoodwink someone into trading for him.

They won’t complicate the matter delisting Corbett to rookie him..when they can just rookie an out of contract Sturt who should repay the faith to the club.

The difference is we don't care if Corbett becomes a free agent, whereas if we want to retain Sturt why make him one when we don't have too.

Sturt I feel conflicted. He kicks goals and is a great distributer of the ball by foot (and long too). He runs good channels. However his composure under pressure ball in hand is bit suspect and his ground ball work is not great which is bit of problem for someone who is not a key forward. I get the feeling if he won't sign under the terms we offer he'll be delisted.
