Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Jokes aside if you look ahead more than twelve months we always needed reinforcements at half back. If it wasn’t this year it was next.

Wagner looking capable would have made me think twice about this opinion. Young’s move to the midfield means I still think we require a reinforcement or two.

By the end of 2024 I don’t expect Wilson or Hughes to still be on our list. If Young plays midfield I expect Aish to be part of our best back seven - he’s 29 next year.

With Worner playing HBF at times I’m thinking maybe one HBF in the next 18 months.

I'd only be ok with losing Darcy it if we bought in a serviceable ruck partner for Action J, I don't want him leading it all the time because he's such a weapon elsewhere around the ground.

Sean Darcy doesn’t come close to Max Gawn, I have a couple of issues with Darcy.
Removing the season ending ankle - he is a big unit that lands hard and gets hurt frequently- and I’m not meaning ruck collision injuries…
Others have noted as well that in games, he has a season ending injury and then plays the next week- lacks some hardness
The evolution of the game ‘appears’ to be that a move towards an ultra mobile athletic ruck….I am worried that Darcy will soon become a dinosaur with how the game is evolving.
A leaping ruck gets clearances in the guts but a bulky/hulking ruck wins the clearances from stoppages around the ground, I just hope we do not pay massive overs for two ‘rucks’ - one of which has believe has currency now to get us missing pieces more important to complete the puzzle.
We absolutely missed Darcy early in the season but his influence was lessened with our mids not being able to utilise his ruck dominance.

I wasn't commenting on Darcy's abilities, I was simply pointing out that getting excited about Jackson shredding Fort isn't warranted and I used Max as the example of who Fort isn't.

Not really. We gave 3 picks but we got Jackson & 2 picks back. I can’t track it exactly but I think we used the other picks on Emmett & Wagner. That might not be exactly right but it’s something like that.
Melbourne used our 13 (pushed back to 15) last year on Mathew Jefferson a skinny tall forward yet to debut plus whatever they get this year with the 2 picks 1sr & 2nd Rd.
So you would have to compare whoever ends up being the best of the players they get with our picks v Jackson and then the other 2 V Emmett & Wagner who is already playing best 22 for us.
If they get 3 gems it leans their way a bit but they’d have to get something pretty special to compare to Jackson.
I rate Jackson as Fyfe/Bont good in terms of his sheer ability to take a game apart on his own & I’m happy giving up 3 decent picks for him.
When you add Wagner who may end up a really solid player for us it’s good business but I’d do it for Jackson on his own. He’s very special.
Edit. I see above it’s Wagner, Knobel which is potentially even better.

I will consider our off season successful if we sign Henry & Sturt.
Do what you do with whatever picks we have but please football gods let Henry stay & don’t let us be so stupid as to not offer Sturt a contract.

He's hardly going to say 'freo have found one for the future but he'll be playing elsewhere' is he?

No, we already feel like we lack midfield depth. Brodie seems like the type who is ready to step in when called upon.

I would be happy to have Brodie hanging around even if he only plays 5-10 games a season for the rest of his contract. He is also capable of winning his spot back and playing more than that.

He may not be best 22 but pressure on spots is good.

Then when injuries occur you aren't relying on 19 or 20 year olds to immediately be at the level.

We don’t HAVE to trade /delist heavily this year.

If Darcy demands to go I’d consider it.
I think next year he’s a FA? We’d get good compensation by being able to force a trade.

Next year we have to consider the future of Hamling etc. Sturt looks like being re-signed this year.

Emmet, Kuek and Corbett also next year. We have more picks next year.

I’d like us to sit tight tbh.

Honestly I expect minimal changes.

Henry and Sturt are the unknowns at the moment. Reidy and Stanley also unsigned.

Wagner a nice surprise to retain his place in primary list.

Corbett for mine odds on to be delisted and moved to rookie list. Big decision coming on Hamling.

If someone came and made a decent trade offer for Tabs then sure but the odds are very long on that happening with his injury issues the past two years. Same goes for Hamling.

Delist: Wilson, Benning, Colyer, Hamling, Corbett.

Corbett under contract to be selected as a rookie. Can’t imagine anyone else bothering to select him before us and status as delisted free agent is no concern either.

Very likely that one of Sturt or Henry leaves. I personally would like both retained. It seems likely that Henry decided (or more likely Colon did for him) mid season and he will be traded. He is definitely a decent second round pick. We should start at first round. A fair outcome would be to upgrade our early second and upgrade one of third round picks. We have four picks and for mine won’t be using anything extra.

For example:
21, 51, Henry > 15, 34
(Note: 15 and 34 are Brisbane’s 1st and 2nd allocated to WB and based on Bris finishing 4th)

Melbourne likely have 16/17 and 35/36 which is similar.

(Values Henry at pick 36, which is lower than I’d like but the outcome is preferable that a stand-alone pick).

We go to draft with 15, 34, 40, 58

I wouldn’t assume anything about Chapman given the year he’s just had. And I want Young welded to the midfield. There is no rush to clean the list

One more year of Hamling will not be the be all and end all of the list management. We’d be replacing him at the bottom end of the draft.

I'd be down for 3 picks in the draft (trade up our mid 50s pick) and then taking a rookie

Just can't see us needing Hamling for more than 5 games, so no point keeping him

It would require their first this and next even if we had to send something back but I just dont see it happening. I think Geelong are starting a proper clean out of older players and need more draft picks, not less
