Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Can’t dislike a player? Not a fan of Henry or Hughes either. Have they wronged me to? 🤦‍♂️

Ethan Hughes just by his presence as a human diamond wrecking ball is a judgement by example of softly spoken masculine hardness.

Like a satin cricket bat.

Just reiterate I obviously think getting Sharp is a waste of time.

Stanley, JOM, AB and Aish can all play wing.

Serong, Erasmus, Young and Johnson are the ones in the guts.
Nah you need to at minimum have the option of more direct wingers (if not have your wingers be direct by design). Most of the guys you've listed aren't particularly direct: Stanley the only real exception from an extremely limited sample size. Sharp is a desirable acquisition to be a more direct winger.

JOM is not a winger. Doesn’t have the tank. Brayshaw could be played on the wing. JOM spends a fair bit of time on the bench and for mine is in the guts or high half forward. He and Fyfe could swap in and out. Problem is where that leaves Brodie.

Anyway at the expected cost of fourth round or later I don’t have a problem increasing depth to wing. Hughes gone from wing rotations. Henry gone. Acres gone from last year and Cerra spent time on the Wing. Jordan Clark and Worner preferred off half back. The added depth even with Wthan Stanley who is raw and developing is not a bad option.

I’d like to see us at least try Jordan Clark on the wing.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Matthew Johnson at a half back flank, at least for a little bit. He reminds me a bit of Mitch Duncan who has had a great career.

This preseason is huge, we literally tried nothing earlier this year.

I think they've been rotating MJ there the last month. He's started taking a few intercept marks in the D50. Him and Young being able to rotate consistently would add a lot of flexibility and keep size in the middle at all times basically

Preferably we would have all ten of our midfielders able to run through both the wing and inside the stoppages so that when one of them is getting close attention or an opponent is being slightly too accountable we can have a player switch during play and suddenly the opposition's defensive stoppage player is standing out in clear space because Serong moved away from the ball - or, they let him go and he becomes a loose.

Flexibility without losing too much predictability. Plus I want burst players at the 6-6-6 bounce stoppages, but grunt contested players at the subsequent clustered around and clogged up stoppages.

Could be wrong, but I thought he was playing wing when he was getting back for those D50 marks. Didn’t seem to be directly on a forward, just getting back to help. Doesn’t change your point though, one of Young or Jackson at every stoppage is a must, being able to rotate through wing or half back helps that.

I thought Clark was brought in to be a wingman to begin with, but then we decided to place him at half back instead.

This. We have very few natural wingers on our list.

The majority of these wing 'options' will play there for a bit then move to their more natural position. We won't win a flag with these types on the wing.

Stanley and Williams are wingers but are raw.

NOD and Johnson are inside mids we're trying to turn into wingers - it's okay but they'll be better on the inside.

JOM, Erasmus, Brayshaw are wasted on the wing. It doesn't suit them at all.

Aish is a great player to have as the 20th odd player in the team. He can play almost anywhere but isn't a specialist winger.

There's a reason the club is thinking of trying Chapman, Freddy etc. on the wing.

It's our biggest need within our best 22 and I'd argue by quite a considerable distance.

Can't agree enough. A great winger will run run all day defensively to fill space, maybe he stops 2, 3 or 4 D50 transitions from the oppo before they happen. Equally they run run all day offensively as well to support attacks that might otherwise not have resulted in a i50. Preferably they are big enough to impact or split a contest when they have to. Across a season it'll win you extra games.

... that I would expect any WAFL/VFL midfielder wanting an AFL career with a rubbish hard role to take with both hands and contribute adequately enough.

The special traits of size, speed and silky skills or movement can make them game breaking players but I think the role of covering space and offering an option for a defense desperate to kick to a mark can be filled reasonably easily.

AFL are bringing out four Irishmen to the combine.

This got me thinking - what happened to the Irish guy we were going to rookie but he got injured and went home? Wasn't he coming back?

Aren’t we maxed out on Cat -B rookies with Draper and Williams?

My gut feel is that Ultan didn't reveal the full extent of his injury prior to the club announcing the signing.

"Such is his form in a new role as an inside forward, the spectre of Fremantle coming back for him is, [Fermanagh selector Fergal] Quinn admits, “always on the table”."

I wonder if that's actual insight or just Quinn kinda talking out his ass. Seems like we might still be monitoring him, but we at the very least needed him to show something in 2023.
