Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

I'm yet to see anything from Erasmus that convinces me he'll be a successful footballer. Of course he is still young, and I would love to be proven wrong, but at this stage if we're playing a final I would have a lot more trust in Brodie to execute his role than Ras, even as sub.

Both have a lot to work on this off season. Brodie has been coasting since coming back from that ankle and needs a good kick up the ass. But I'm not ready to write him off just yet.

Fair enough - still think everything I’ve written about Brodie above is true.

If he turns it around to 2022 levels he’s obviously worth keeping. IMO if he doesn’t and we lose players we don’t want to next year serious questions need to be asked about that contract. If it’s about having a good best 22, good depth and a sustainable salary cap situation it honestly might be best he moves on. Might being a key word btw.

I was at the G for our game vs Collingwood & he really did impress.
I reckon he missed out on a rising star nom, because the organisers knew they owed Matt Johnson & didn't want 2 leapfrog him

I genuinely hope I start seeing what everyone sees in Erasmus soon

Is it because he was a top 10 pick?

He can't kick, he can't handball, he is slow as a treacle

I know its easy to have faith in first rounders but he hasn't been doing these things at WAFL level, maybe I watch too much footy but it was obvious last year just how much better Johnson projects to be and there is clear evidence this year how quickly Johnno has gone past him

Will Brodie is still better depth than Erasmus. If we're contending next year and we need to bring in an inside mid, I know who I'm choosing.
We won’t be contending for much next year if we show up again in R1 with a team that has played an average of 76 games per player.
There was not a single team in the finals this year anywhere near that level of inexperience.

Exactly why we can’t keep getting rid of our experienced guys and replacing them with teenagers. (I know Brodie only has about 50 games to his name, but he’s been in the system as long as Ryan, Darcy, Cox etc.)

Erasmus is still 19 and Johnson turned 20 before the season even started, Neil might as well be thought of as a 2022 draftee.

I know 9 months isn’t a significant amount of time for a lot of us on here but for a developing athlete it can be a huge difference when you’re in your late teens/early 20’s.

Give him time, Johnno’s got the outside class which also stands out at an earlier age, where as Erasmus will be built to be a contested bull which you generally don’t become until you’re at least 22/23 in the AFL environment.

The two will compliment each other in the middle for a long time.

Neil projected as an Elliot Yeo type with less explosive athleticism but more forward craft. In the circumstances, I actually think he's performed fine.
  • He's weak at what he was projected to be weak at, as you've pointed out. Lacks burst and his disposal is erratic. I thought he did learn the Blake Acres secret to kicking efficiency late in the season tho: bomb it down the line, and if it goes to a fifty fifty then that's an effective kick.
  • Despite the fact that those weaknesses should disqualify him from ever playing wing, he played 60% wing this season (Bounce back real hard: How Freo can respond next year). That's a testament to what is probably his biggest strength we've seen at AFL level thus far: the ground he covers at 190cm. With that, defensive work rate has also been impressive.
  • We can't really see the fwd nous that's apparently a strength of his at AFL level coz we play 8 forwards.
  • Hasn't put on significant size yet as someone who presumably will become an inside bull. I assume that will change. For what it's worth, he's got solid centre clearance numbers considering his low CBAs (10 CCs from 85 CBAs these 2 seasons. Granted, I suspect he gets some winger "hit the pack late" CCs).
I think once he packs on size without sacrificing (and hopefully even further improving) his running capacity and we stop playing 8 forwards every single game, he's gonna look like an entirely different player. I think that alone will be enough to make him best 22, but to your point needs to get the disposal right and needs to ask Fyfe about how he improved his explosiveness from the stoppage.

Erasmus reminds me of Dane Swan. Has the same body type. Once he gains a little more muscle and experience, he could be that inside bull/extractor that is difficult to tackle and bring to ground.

All the players mentioned above are twice as quick as Erasmus though

If we put Erasmus in a race with JOM who is 30 and had 2 knee recos JOM would beat him

I wouldn't be surprised if Reidy beat Erasmus for pace tbh

The game has evolved and you need to be able to run nowadays
I'm not sure if this is true or you're perpetuating a myth.
Any vision demonstrating that Erasmus is this slow?

I think your talking about his brother SlowAz, because Erasmus has some wheels

Can we give the Will Brodie trade a rest. Has 3 years to run on his contract.

Erasmus at Peel towards the end of last year looked like the sort of player that should never play WAFL again tbh.

Personally I think he'd get to that level again pretty damn quick if he played there consistently.

He's much better off developing in the AFL but he isn't a winger either...
Isn't a winger is generous: Not a wingers arseh*le.
I think he will make it though: Can win footy, excellent at creating secondary stoppages and unlike your Brodies can get end to end all day.
There are some worrying deficiencies but definatley not in Dow territory yet.

Can't disagree with this.

We've played him wing to get games into him and no other reason. This time last year I was looking forward to him replacing Mundy but we recruited JOM instead. Think he would've done better playing that role even if their strengths and weaknesses are opposite as you'll find for two inside mids.

Yes well I suppose the plan was to have Brodie and JOM rotate as second stoppage winner but it didn't work. Fyfe forward didn't work, then after going back he got injured. Brodie was dropped for being pants and JOM while competitive and good at structuring up simply wasn't winning enough clearances. The bloke can't run he's done.

I think the club is better off for getting the 10 wins and finishing okay rather than dropping JOM and playing Ras and Johnno more on ball, them getting more development but we only get 8 wins.
Winning aids cohesion and most importantly retention. We have a lot of quality young players to retain.
