So I been doing the gardening for 3 days and I've been stewing on this.

I think we should make a play for Nat fyfe.

2 year deal. Where we expect to get 12 months from him.

Next year Steele is 28. Crouch 30. Ross 31. Wood is 31.

Nat fyfe right now looks an ageing shell of himself with recurring injury issues.

But here's the thing. Freo have an appalling injury history especially in treating them. Colin Young has been very vocal of this, where basic things have been missed.

I think we can get his body right and manage him. He gives us another big body mid to go with Steele. Someone who can chop in and out of the fwd line. Perhaps with owens, poo and or wood. Even Gresham.

He's a very good trainer and knows Ross. He'd be another excellent example for the younger guys. He has damage factor fwd of center. Has aerial presence around the ground.

We won't get fyfe in his prime but we will get a very serious footballer who will take the focus off guys like owens.

Also don't get seduced by the broken down fyfe who looks in survival mode who has a big difference of opinion with his senior coach.

He'd cost similar to Sam Mitchell to wce. Or hodge to Brisbane. Aka **** all.

Given the mature nature of our midfield and the green shoots we've seen from the kids. I don't think we need a huge signing here we just need to support what we've got and try bring knowledge in. Keep rising the training standards.

We also take a piece off the table at freo who make no mistake will be back to finals next year with another soft draw.

I always loved the romanticism of getting Bing but the question of the relief ruck role was something I could never satisfactorily answer. Until now, that is.

I genuinely think we can afford to have x2 Kings + a third tall such as Membrey or Caminiti (I’d prefer the latter if his apparent trajectory is anything to go by, but I’m not Membrey’s biggest fan). This is because Owens is showing excellent promise as a relief ruck, spending the rest of his time in the forwardline/midfield. I believe he’s a much closer match to RoMa’s play style of less tap finesse but elite follow up work with contested possessions, tackles, and clearances.

It might be significantly easier to just rotate between these two, than to force some poor sod in there just because of their height. The excellent bonus is allowing us to play 2 genuine key forwards plus a third tall (a role I think Caminiti can play well, given his pace and attack on the ball).
In our new game plan, we needed forwards to be able to put on elite pressure if they don’t mark the ball.. That’s why Owens is excelling in this role because he is quick and great at throwing his weight around.. Max can be bit of a liability when the ball hits the deck which then ask the other forwards to work harder to compensate, having 2 kings just exacerbates the problem. I for one also likes the romanticism of 2 brothers playing for us.. but the hit to salary cap (assume 800k+), draft capital (assume 2 first rounders) and practically from game plan point of view, it doesn’t add up as well.

Definitely think we're getting ahead of ourselves if we say we don't need to draft any more mids.

I'd still go best available, having an excess of quality KPFs could help us trade for quality mids.

Only positions I wouldn't like to see our first round picks go on are:
  • Ruck: Too much of a gamble, too long to develop and likely to leave for opportunities
  • Half Back Flankers: we have more than enough and they're a dime a dozen
  • Small Forwards lacking explosive pace.

I have loved Fyfes career, at his best he was my favourite player in the league. But surely he's done.

Like others have mentioned, M.Crouch is a cheap as chips depth option.

I'm not sure what Fyfe would bring from a leadership and coaching perspective that we don't already have in our assistant coaches (God I hope we keep the three of them as long as possible).

I agree- surely cordy is just keeping Hayes' seat warm for now.

Speaking of locks when fit- coffield is faaaaaaar too good to play at sandy when fit- not matter how well the team are performing.

He's not a mid, not a fwd (probably) not a wingman.

Without sincs or nas being moved, and with stocker currently undroppable- where does he play?
Reckon Sincs goes more mid, Coffield a perfect replacement.

He looks done but he shouldn't be.

His pre season is too strenuous. He's taken too much upon himself to lift the side to a cup.

The management of his injuries has been pretty disgusting and threatened his career in a very serious way.

The way he's been used now and what he's been instructed to do is so far removed from making fyfe efficient.

The side that gets him will see a much improved fyfe.

We give up **** all in this play but the potential for it to pay off is huge. It could be a defining factor next year.

We've been as exciting as herpes in that time. At least we look like a club on the up this season. We could only buy players who wanted money before. If we can sustain performance under Lyon we will get players for the right reasons.

King hasn't played yet under Lyon but what Hammer offers is an extra defensive forward. If we can turn Max into a defensive weapon I'd feel more confident in paying it. We'd want to ruck Ben as well I reckon.

I'd rather chase Ned Moyle after that game. You'd get him cheap and he looks like a ready made young ruck.
Max Heath owned him in the VFL last season. I'd rather keep Heath and let other clubs like the Bulldogs offer $450,000 to pry him loose.

Coffield could be such a boon to this side. Even if we just got him back to 2020 form he would make a big difference.

If we can get him back on the trajectory he was on, the sky's the limit for what is already a very good backline.

Coffs second half against the dogs in the elimination final was Sam Fisher-esque

And because I'm on a roll. Liam Ryan.

Wonder if Fyfe would be willing to play for close to minimum wage, if he were I'd be a lot more open to the idea.

Yeah it's a pretty crazy idea.... I would have thought he would wanna be a 1 club player.

If we did get him maybe Owens could teach him a thing or two [emoji6]

Moneys not an issue for him both he and his family are absolutely loaded.

He's chasing a flag.

I haven't seen anyone say we don't have to draft any more mids

Just been pointing out that we do now currently have a really good core of young mids

We used our 2022 first round pick on a mid (Phillipou) and our 2021 on a wingman (NWM)

We also used 2 second rounders (Hotton/Owens) and a 3rd rounder (Windhager) on mids in that time

If the the 2021 draft was done again today both Owens and Windy would go first round

Bringing in a big recruit no matter who it is doesn't mean you can't bring in other players. There will he other draft picks and we are also at a position where have probably got the best depth we've seen at the club for some time so expect to see a few floated at trade time.

The big question in my mind is are we a two or three tall forward line?

For me, given the game style of high pressure and our running our opposition into the ground, I’m for two talls.

Something like….

Owans Membrey Gresh
Butler King Higgins

7th as a rotating mid - Steele, windy ect.

Unlucky for Hammer and Hayes.

What do people think?? Two or three?
I see our best Fwd line as

HF: Owens, Hayes, Gresham
FF: Membrey, King, Higgins
7th: Butler

Depth: Billings, Caminiti, Phillipou, Sharman, Peris, Heath, Keeler, Alison...

Going with the old crew because I can't help but believe they'll have 10-25% improvement in them also.

Gresham, Cordy, Owens, Phillipou, Sharman could all play elsewhere also and get spells forward. So much flexibility with this side.

quie

He was a shadow of his former self on Saturday night, he would have benefitted from a few games in the VFL to start the season.

After watching the GCS VFL side play they mirrored their AFL side. I am convinced they and Fremantle have the worst game plan in the competition. Stewart Dew is an absolute dud and he gets sets on players and cruels their careers. They have that much talent in their VFL it is ridiculous, yet they only ran over Sandringham with a 5 AFL listed players in the last 1/4. It was all about their game style, they stats pad having 100 more disposals than Sandi and dominated possession but couldnt score.

The entire GCS club looks like they are not enjoying their footy I doubt its a good environment. Gubby Allan and SOS have the right idea looking at GCS they have a heap of wasted talent running around up there.
Some blokes there I really like. From the VFL on the weekend, Jeremy Sharp is one. He was looking the goods two seasons ago and has an unbelievable tank but fell out of favour. He would absolutely love to play under Ross you'd think.

Alex Davies I like also (and Half Japanese! Could make the club the official club of Japan). Bodhi Uwland will be good.

Special mention to Elijah Hollands. Looked ordinary on the weekend but could be Stocker 2.0 in a new environment.

Not the worst idea if we are just off a premiership after this season.

Had a look at the Hawks board. They are looking ahead to the possibility of drafting Harley Reid. Reminds me of this board in 2013-4 when all we had to look forward to was the draft and playing football ran a distant second. What a depressing period of being a supporter. Poor feckers have a long, long road ahead.
Only to be disappointed at the end of the year because we reached for the chubby full forward instead...
