Love your thinking, you are right with your no no no no.
We should go to the draft and get some more 18-year-old midfielders because the 20-year-old midfielders will guide them?

Or should we be targeting some superstars? Maybe Matt Rowell? Nick Daicos? Tim English? Issac Heeney?

End of the day we are a developing and rebuilding team, we lack on-field leadership and we lack ready-to-go talent. Asking a player in their prime to leave their club and come to a rebuilding club is dreaming, maybe we can pull it off with some sweet talking but prying a 25-year-old who's club is probably closer to the Grand Final than us to leave their team will set us up like every year when we tried to get Martin, Kelly, De Goey, and Heeney in the past.

We have the talent, we just need to get competitive and also give the kids someone to look to on the field who isn't Corr or McDonald who hang their heads down.

Comparing Hall, Greenwood, Sheils, and Walker to Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Mcrae, and Clarry......not sure about that....

We've got the war-chest, let's spend it for once.

Why not? The assistance package was for last year, if we are still this crap by the end of the year, then we need another assistance package or another version that doesn't just focus on draft selections.

It's actually in the AFL favour to use NMFC as a test case of modern team rebuilding from the ground up as we won't be last team to raze the list and perform a ground up rebuild.

The AFL stuffed it up from the start. Every other supporter keeps brining up priority picks as some incredible gift but in reality they are mid picks with mid results. If the AFL had any kahunas, they would have done it right the first time, given a top 10 pick and take the hit. Now they cannot do any more.

At the start of next season:

Darcy Tucker will be 27
Jy Simpkin 26
Cam Zurhaar 26
Zac Fisher 26
LDU 25
Bailey Scott 24
Tom Powell 23

These guys aren't kids anymore.

l think after listening to that ,that l would go for Callan Ward. And if getting assistance from the AFL to get an experienced player like Ward then maybe a pick in the 6-10 range might do it...If we do get some help it must be to use on getting an experienced player from another club and not another young player..
Ward would be ok if he could do a Mid-Fwd role, however, not sure if he would want to leave GWS when they are so close to the Premiership Window. However, I agree he would provide some good experience and guidance for the younger mids.

I agree, but hard to lure in young talent in the restricted free-agency window who would agree to come to North.

Money alone we can look at the high-end free agents like:

Jarrod Berry
Hugh McCluggage
Zach Guthrie
Isaac Cumming
Jack Graham
Tim English

English would probably not be a good fit as too much money in the ruck area, however, any of the others would be good, especially the defenders.

If we were to offer money to other players to come across, would have to do a trade with that team and we don't have a lot to offer apart from our 1st rounder and 2nd rounder, and would also depend if that player would want to come across.

Who are you thinking of?

Callan Ward, the guy who bailed off on the bulldogs when they were at their lowest?
Yeah he aint coming to put the club ahead of himself, the only reason he'd come is for the pay check.

Berry, Graham & Cumming will do.

Pendlebury - 36. Will retire 2024
Dangerfield - was 34 in early April. King of hamstrings
Tomlinson - 31 in August. Can't get a game
Mcrae - 30 in August ( see Tomlinson )
Oliver - 27 in July 🤣 Out Tarryn, In Clarry. Brilliant thinking.

See; Hall, Greenwood, Sheils, Walker et al.

No, no, no, no, no.
I wouldn't be crossing off their names purely on age alone.

Shiels was a great idea in theory but he was cooked. His first two games for the club were unreal, he showed signs of on field leadership that resonated throughout. Once he was past it though, we couldn't carry him which was a real shame.

The players above (Tomlinson aside) have all been high quality players for a very long time. The crop we dragged in were bit part role players in good sides at the absolute best. If Pendles passes a medical and can go a year on with a coaching position at the end of it, absolute no brainer.

Apparently Weagles are dragging their feet in giving Elliott Yeo a contract. Surely North gets in his ear, offers him a 2-year contract on big money and maybe a coaching role at the end of it. Great player when he's not injured, and even if he gets injured he can still drive some serious standards and leadership off-field.
If a no d*ckhead policy is in place at North then stay away from Yeo.

He almost single handedly won us the game against the cheats. But I take your general point.

These guys also don't jump off the page as seasoned leaders.
Two points.

1. Not sure Clayton Oliver and leadership have been in the same sentence for a while.

2. They'll never be leaders if we keep protecting them. At some point, it has to become their midfield. And frankly, moving on Goldstein has helped Xerri flourish, perhaps there's something in that.

Clayton Oliver, never talked about as a leader but he certainly was the one on the ground that changed Melbournes fortunes.
he came in first year and put up ridiculous contested numbers around the ball.
Issues aside, he'd be perfect to slot into our midfield.

The Assistance Package included 2023 picks and future picks for 2024, with the caveat that if we improved the AFL may reassess the need for future picks. It was a not so subtle way of telling us to trade the 2024 picks last year, which we did.

So not only have we already been given assistance this year but we've used it… and we're still sh*t.

Did you put up a post today saying a little birdie told you NM are getting into the ear of Aaron Cadman's manager. Apparently, Cadman hasn't settled in as well as the GWS had hoped he would. Is this information correct?

Is it true that you are really THIS Sam??

I would pay up for Cumming, but Berry and Graham not sure. We don't wan to hand out a fat pay cheque to Berry or Graham to play mid-roles when we have Wardlaw, Mckercher in the wings. Would rather give them a fat salary and keep them from leaving. Have to think of down the track what does the salary cap look like

They weren't at their lowest, the dogs finished 10th in 2011

I agree, he is best mates with Simpkin so hopefully culture wise will enjoy the young team. However, the main point will help us be competitive in games and allow Wardlaw and the others to learn from a winning midfielder.

If Cunners stayed a little longer it would have provided the same benefit in terms of mentoring, but Clarry provides the on-field edge we probably need to help the confidence of the players and fans.

I think its a balance of giving them the experience to make the team their own, and also giving them the opportunity to learn more outside of the struggles on the field.

I think you are right that in time I am sure they will become a top leaders hopefully still within North, but until them have to provide them some outlets to absorb as much as they can which doesn't just involve losing until you come good.

Like any good team outside of football and inside needs some experienced heads who have been through it before to show you what you aren't seeing and vice versa by acknowledging the fresh ideas from youth.

Most players will only come to us for the paycheck...This is a fact so we have to accept it .
