Apparently Carmichael is a bit of an odd cat and barracks for Port. I think there may have been a bit more to the story about why we didn't draft Carmichael. If we had been able to get them all comfortably I presume we would have done it (so, the points were relevant) but I also get the sense there were some asterisks with Carmichael and that it was not chance that he's the one we passed on.

I couldn't give a stuff about him , he's nothing to worry about at this stage , skinny HBF's are falling out of trees

He didnt excite that much in the descriptions of him. If he had more speed maybe, he would have.
If he had more hieght then maybe would have.
184 average speed Hbf accumulator, doesn’t sound that great at AFL level.
I am excited by all of the draftees.

Decent disposal, great intercept mark, really shines when played in the midfield this year.

He will play plenty of games, will he be a Brownlow medalist? No that's unlikely, but I can see him playing 150-200 games and having a very solid Lloyd style career.

McNamara was the U18's Academy captain this year

I must emphasise that I have no personal knowledge and am passing on scuttlebutt from people who know more than I do. I'm also not passing on all I heard because I don't like to do that when it's not reliable and not especially flattering. However, he may have won the captaincy after having been a clearly good and reliable player for an extended period of time. He's been an acknowledged talent since at least U16s, when he was AA.

I think that he's not in the same league as a lockdown defender and, conversely, is much more noted for his ball use and disposal than Smooch was. His strengths seem different to me, even if they both play accountable small defender roles.

Thats a huge trade/draft period. 9 new players which was equal most (with Suns) of all teams. Cox's first year has really put his mark on the list.
Cox wanted to improve the list by adding a Tall forward, Small forward, Tall defender and Dynamic Mid.
He got three in trades and added Kyle, Phillipou, Cootee and King as potentially Dynamic Mids. Then as a bonus, added 2 x tall (but different) developing fwds.

Kyle, Phillipou, Cootee and King can potentially play as running/distrubting half backs, inside/outside midst tall/small fwds. Theres a lot to work with there.
All have elite running ability, some fly high for marks, are tall, or small, big bodies, or nimble, long kicks, accurate kicks, play rd 1, play year 3.
As the game gets quicker and rebounding and transition becomes ever more important, the attributes that our draftees have will become very important.

Great job Keane and Cox (and all the others).. was ruthless, had a crack, so lets see how it plays out

I think he can develop into Smooch type player.

Smooch was a mid when we drafted him and wasn't moved to a lockdown defender until Horse took charge. From memory, Smith ability on his left was one of his strengths in under aged group but this is going back 20 odd years now.

For mine, seemed the most able to play 200 games and be that 10-18 type of player on a list.

Again, still has a heap of development and could be anything as showed a bit through middle when sent there

I have a couple of concluding comments about this years draft.

First, it's nice to have a consensus of happiness after a draft for a change (and, especially, to achieve that notwithstanding that we had traded away our first rounder).

Second, the other thing I want to highlight is that for many years people have bemoaned all the highly rated KPP prospects we have let slide past us (or even some that got picked before us). Looking just at 2021-2023 (I think it's too soon to talk about 2024) these included: Jye Amiss, Leek Aleer, Jedd Busslinger, Matthew Jefferson, Max Gruzewski, Lewis Hayes, Logan Morris (and apologies this is not a comprehensive list). A year earlier there was the likes DGB, Zach Reid, Nik Cox in the top 10 (but after JUH, Thilthorpe, Logan McDonald). I think there were other talls that were relatively highly rated pre-draft that also went undrafted or as rookies over this period. Of all of those only Amiss and Morris have really hit their straps and looked like a clear win. The point is, over the years that we have clamoured for the club to try and draft various talls that were potentially in reach (and I have been among those clamouring at times) but not many have turned out to be hits. So, I think we need to reflect on this and perhaps cut our recruiters more slack. (Even with the ones they miss - they may recognise that there is a chance the player could come good but have decided that it was a risk not worth taking given who else was on offer.)

Hence, to combine points one and two, we have even more reason to be delighted with the rookie drafting of promising KPP prospect Liam Hetherton.

The bitching that went on about Brisbane and GCS getting all their academy kids was so St.kilda like.
They seemed certain that "little pou" as they referred him would surely last till their pick at 41. That alone was staggering. We were last on their mind as surely there would be a bid on King before our 35 pick.
When we picked him up at 35, the shit really hit the fan.
"I hate Sydney" was the general theme, put in various ways.
Then, quite a few comments came in about us him not being all that good and they haven't missed on anything special.
Once it was getting nearer to their pick at 41, the comments came about a bid has to be put in for King. Sydney don't have enough points for him. Then even funnier were all the comments that at pick 41 they would put a bid in for him and they would have two Max Kings at Moorabbin. The fools weren't aware that after pick 36 which was the time all these comments were being made, there was no need for Sydney to match with points. We would pick up King merely with our next pick.
They kept mentioning all the other players they would like to have as well and were not overly impressed with Banfield.
Poor souls.

I feel really excited by this crop and the direction of the club and surely Cox has had a big say in this and i feel that this group might be the game changers we needed. I might be wrong , but even on here i for once can find a great positivity on here with what we've done .
Really looking forward to the season , so many new faces , sad for some that a couple of loved players are gone , but to go forward tough decisions needed to be made for once , the only one i disagreed with was Ramps not being retired.
Malceski should also have a better VFL team and that's so important

9 list changes (without Rampe) is a lot.. maybe Rampe and all his leadership skills and the fact that he optimises the bloods culture will help Malceski make the VFL team better. Yes absolutely, thats so important. Snell, Edwards, Andrew would hugely benefit from and love playing with him. Green, Hanily, Bowman and all this years draftees are developing and in the same boat.
I cant imagine a better on-field coach than Rampe. (maybe Cunningham, Adams and Lloyd help the VFL too)

You probably know more than me... and supporting Port is just flat-out weird but i can make the case in regards points and deficit without seeing ulterior motives.

We have 740 odd points before FA's next year, 500 less than any other club and 6 times less than West Coast. Its dire. Taking a deficit and then possibly extending it with King was just too big a risk. Taking the bid would have been locking us into the academy players only and paying for them next year. In the end passing was the most obvious decision.

We got Phillipou, Coottee and no deficit for passing on Carmichael. We nailed it.

I grew up playing footy with Nick and Kennedy, can confirm Nick is the best player I played with as a junior, he was a midfielder that could play anyway. Kennedy played CHF was unreal also.
Both super humble, nice blokes with really good families.
You’re right when Nick got picked up there wasn’t a spot for him in the midfield, so they asked him to play as a defender.
