Player Watch #40: Eddie Ford

I thought he was poor today
Thought he was good personally. Provided a regular option in a forward line which still remains a bit of a mess. Shoulda ended up with a few goals if not for the wind. I don’t think he plays round 1, but will play this year pretty regularly based on the intra and today.

Zurhaar playing mid minutes, makes space for Eddie.

Yeah, he did OK in P2 but those gusts were pretty strong.

Personally think he’s shown a bit in the first intraclub & match sims. Perfect sub candidate to come on and offer a bit of goal nous and if we want to take off a tall to go smaller or if we want to take off a small to go taller. Don’t necessarily think he’s in our best 23 players but could carve a role as a specialist sub, Kieran Harper style.

Yeah Ford certainly has the ability, it is more a question if he can understand what is required and follow instructions.
It’s just weird that through injuries and suspensions that his name is never in the picture and I just wonder what the deficiencies in his game are.

I think TAO is all over it.

I've seen coaches put extra work into him at training over the past 18 months with regards to leading patterns etc..

The natural ability and flair is there, and he looks a million dollars when it works, but he hasn't got the credits in the bank to go "off script ". A weak link in the team strategy is costly.

Our fwd line is clogged selection wise
Have to play Larkey and Zurhaar
for the future we have to play Comben and Curtis, and Sheezel
Sleevo has talent, so has Taylor, TT is in the house

and now Cunners is going to get time there,
don’t forget defensive forward Turner, Mahony used to get a game

going on this weeks team selection he should probably think everyone is going to get a chance

Not kicking the goals needed to get back in, but played further up the ground against the swans as a high third tall and did well. Would like him in, but he isn’t kicking the goals.

That's good though. I don't think he has enough going on to be a stay at home 3rd forward at AFL level. If he can add the ability to reliably lead up the ground, act as a link player and still hit the goals every now and again that will give him a real shot at being part of the best 22 in the longer term.

Accumulation will be an issue, but nothing wrong with his marking and disposal. He also flies through contests with his big body, which gives him space. Even if he doesn't make it, I wouldn't mind him played as an inside mid for a few games.

Agree.

I kind of think his shot at a role in the AFL is that peak Corey Jones esque linking small CHF / HHF who must still be respected because he will kick goals out the back or with his physicality if allowed. He has a heap of development to get to that point but I do think there is a bit to work with and worth the time developing him.

Could Ford provide competition for the role currently occupied by Curtis Taylor?

does he have the tank to play inside mid for all or most of the day?

Hard to say. Has decent work rate, but inside mid is a different type of fitness and endurance was a pre draft weakness.

Another one poorly named . “Henry” would have been much better.

Anyways I’d play him out of FF against the Saints. It is his time to shine. Offers nothing defensively but could unravel the Lyon plan by being totally unpredictable.

Heck he needs 3 disposals to be equally as effective as CCJ.

Reckon he’d be better. Fwiw.

He would be better in the AFL side seem we have an actual person resembling a KPF in Larkey, as compared to our compete lack of KPFs in the VFL (which has meant that Eddie had to be the KPF).
