Review A Win’s A Win - Freo by Six In The ‘Away’ Game vs North

Luke Ryan was def HTB. Went in slow motion for some reason. Had prior opportunity for sure.

Not 100% sold on the Cox Free kick against. It looked like a free kick but on replay he got pretty much all ball. It was a bit dumb that by Cox. They showed the lead in and he half went forward to try and impact the player in front when he never could and Larkey was clever dropping back. If Cox just stuck to Larkey it would have been much easier for him to impact.
I'll need to watch the Ryan tackle again because live from where I was it looked like he was tackled straight away.
You could make a strong case against Freo on all those free kicks. The one that bothered me was Freddie's chase down late in the game. Ryan's was htb and this was probably even longer.

Freddie behind the ball late is a weird one. Just seems odd AF choice but 2 close games he's come up with big plays at the death. Lol maybe JL is a master tactician afterall.....
Yeah I lost my shit at that non call.

The holding the ball has transitioned massively away from the interpretation they brought in last season of needing to dispose of the ball quickly. We are gonna see dangerous tackles increase soon if umpires don't pay HTB quicker.

Yes that Freddy run down was definitely a missed HTB. On initial first view I also through Ryan call was quick but on replay it was the right call. He had ample opportunity to give off a handball.

Holy crap we could be equal 4th if we beat Essendon next week. That's bloody huge.

This win while it seems bad is actually huge for our season. We've won 3 games in the wet, and 2 close games where they threw the absolute kitchen sink at us. These types of wins only build belief and momentum with the group.

Just watched the replay
Heart stopper for sure and by jingo do we know how to make it hard for ourselves .

Anyway , I genuinely expected a loss after the bye and North are that Dr Jekyl team that you just never know when they are gonna turn up

Lots of learning from the review of this one
Amiss - kick straighter , learn to block
Freddy - learn how to tackle and forget the superman shit , just play football
Murph - I luv ya , but if your 25 out with 2 minutes to go , have a ping mate
Sharp - watch NOD play for a few weeks while you are in the 2’s , wings need to deliver into the 50 and kick goals , you aren’t doing neither

Onwards and upwards - the team can build off this one , a loss would have been demoralising.
Oh and gutted for Switta 😔, hope it’s not bad , he’s been in good form

Well Freddy isn’t doing much ahead of the ball so may as well put him behind it , that chase down was defs HTB

I don't like that we have a short break and it's been a rainy game. If I were an essendon supporter that's exactly what I'd want for us. Coming up against a bashed around tired side.
Essendon only have about 2 hours more recovery time than us plus a flight. Lack of preparation time compared to the opposition is not an excuse this week.

I thought playing Freddy lose in defense was silly late in the 4th.

He doesn't appear to have the nouse to position himself correctly, and he is not known for his marking.
Just finished rewatching the game, so a few thoughts that echo others;
  • Draper was quite poor, wouldn't be surprised to see him get dropped for Davies or McDonald
  • Darcy was more important than I realised, still a long way from his best footy but Jackson got monstered by Xerri
  • Frederick didn't have his best game, and I wish he'd put more physical pressure on, but subbing him out seemed unlikely as he always offers some run and defenders have to respect him
  • The umpiring in the last quarter wasn't particularly consistent, but we had a few potential high free kicks against us not called at least partially balancing some harsh HTB and a pretty blatant hold on Brayshaw i50
  • Switta was very good, had a lot of nice moments so will be annoying if he's actually done his hammy

What were your thoughts on Ryan?

I thought he looked slow several times, but not sure if he got caught out on a quicker person or he has just lost speed.

Luke Ryan is playing injured - he had a lot of strapping under his jersey and got hit in front of us and was in a lot of pain, I think he is a legend and we would be stuffed without him in the backline.

I get the feeling he has been playing injured all year. (Sore Ribs is my guess)

I wonder how it is impacting him.

The key point is the game conditions.

Fremantle's game: 143 tackles, 296 contested possessions
Essendon's game: 101 tackles, 239 contested possessions

Fremantle had to earn it more, wear more hits, carry more bruises into the next game.

Essendon have pushed a lot of teams, and they don't travel much so a lot like Collingwood they can focus a lot into planning for the few "big travels" they do.

Having said that we don't have any excuses, we need to show up and win.

Amiss is having a down year as well as opposition keeping on top of him far, far better. I'm not sure if I want Amiss being more physical like Voss because his weapon is his speed but from watching at the ground we are ignoring him leading a lot - but it's not just him being ignored. There's a guy standing in about 15m of clear grass around him inside fifty almost every time the ball is coming in off the flank, he is ignored and then manned up before the Freo player kicks long towards Treacy leading.

While I have been very vocal about Amiss and Treacy not living up to their potential, I think there is some blame to be shared by Graham. The forwardline at times looks stagnant and reactive from my observations at the games. While slower ball movement would impact the effectiveness of our forward entries, I wouldn't be averse to trialling a new forward coach to see if they could be getting any more out of our key forwards.

No one is saying he’s untouchable. People disagree with your argument that dropping Amiss would improve him. People pointed out that the examples you used don’t apply that much.
Completely wrong as usual. Just read about 15 different excuses.

It's cool though, this board roasts certain players and cries when you talk ill of certain players.

Both are babies still in KPF terms and are developing beautifully.
Our forward line (over the last 4 games) as a collective is as connected and dangerous at times as it's just about ever been in the post Pav era. Plus our ability to rebound from half back through the corridor and score is elite by competition standards.

Treacy is being used further from goals. Linking up play and taking the contested mark at HF or wing. He is very good at the ground ball as well, being able to break tackles and deliver kicks to a leading forward. I dont think we will play Treacy, Voss and Amiss together inside the 50.
