News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

I hope this leads to undrafted players nominating a club and letting every other club know under no circumstances will they play for them.

Refuse to sign a contract.

Happens in other sports, might come to the AFL.

This already happens. Every year.

Another simple solution.
If the Northern states want to keep their academy players for themselves, then both the clubs and the players should be excluded from the draft.
They can pick players via the old zone system and the other clubs can use the draft.

How do you propose we increase talent levels coming out of NSW and Qld? You don’t even know how academies are funded.
Having access from Rd 2 onwards will still make it worth while for academies and still provide Northern clubs an advantage, Remember, you get all kids, not just NGA's to pick from.

Freo has had access from pick 40 for years, they still run and fund the programs with around a 1/3 of the distribution of the Northern clubs.

NGA and academy are the same. The only difference is we have to fund and run the academies whereas all you have to do with the NGA is an ancestry test.

Not in the national draft.

Yes it does. VFL kids tells interstate clubs they don’t want to leave Victoria. Interstate clubs can’t draft those kids. Happens every year.

You fund nothing. It's like a billionaire's adult kid complaining that they are funding a holiday when it just comes straight from Dad's allowance and it's a holiday.

I just think the elite programs should be open to all kids in all states. Not just the Northern ones or ones that qualify for NGA. Access can remain with the rules and they should move to have the same rules for all clubs eventually or restricted by ladder position.

Our academy is basically entirely funded by private sponsorship dollars. Freo would generate private sponsorship money which they’d put towards their premiership program.

I think it has been raised elsewhere but the first round is still going to be pushed out by compensation picks and the secret herbs and spices have to be addressed as it does compromise the first round of the draft as well.

The academies I can see at round 2 onwards matching there is still some benefit to their existence. But father-son if matched point for point (ie no discount) would blow out the first round by what 5 players at most? I think the two should be separated and FS remain.

Also on the academies I wonder how many of these kids from interstate would do the same as some Vic kids currently and just say you don't want to draft me from outside of my home state or I will be seeking a trade back as soon as possible. This would then lead to a first round pick player arguably not playing to their potential and then the initial team getting less back in return via trade, so may be a double-edged sword anyway picking highly rated academy kids.

And the rest of your club is funded how?

Brisbane received $30m from the AFL last year, WC and Freo received $34m combined.

Why do you think clubs might receive different distributions?

With the current system we have no way of knowing.

Why did Yeo, Docherty, Polec etc. all leave as soon as they could but Simon Black and (AFAIK) Daniel Rich are still there?

Why do you think clubs might receive different distributions?

A number of reasons.

There were only 3 teams to hit $30m+; Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS. Sydney were 6th with $24m.

It's spurious to play the 'we fund the academies' card when you have your hand deep inside the cookie jar. Average distribution per club outside NSW and Qld is $21m. Inside it's $31m.

How should clubs be funded? Equally?

Not sure why it has to be scrapped. The matching system just has to be a lot fairer. To the point of your a good team it becomes very difficult to match a bid high in the draft
You could trade for the pick to grab them. That would be the fairest way to get the value right.

Fairer way maybe is to require that any F/s or NGA bid in the first round needs to be at least matched in points by a first rounder then if needed additional points from 2nd and 3rd. Stops clubs off loading a first rounder and loading up with stacks of 2 and 3rd selections to get them for cheap.
