News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

A lot can change in 18-24 months (by the time the 2025 national draft happens) I wouldn't be too concerned.

There is going to sliders and bolters from any state during that time.

Seems to me that this is just another unnecessary thread aimed against the Northern State clubs and their academies..
The change to happen will be the reverse

More academy players will be added to that list of 10, not less

Once you branch out of that 22 and look beyond it the players 25-50 are mostly academy based also but GWS moreso then Gold Coast

I think two separate things need to be recognised. The academies are doing great work in NSW and QLD and the draft has been compromised by the way the AFLs rules currently work. It's pretty easy to go, we need to keep academies but need to look at how they are affecting the current draft and unwind that.

I'm not massively convinced a draft even works in the AFL where there isn't a high level second tier league like college sports, players move often and aren't paid enough to just put up with wherever they move but it's a massive clickbait success and the AFL won't change it. The least you can ask is this is meant to be the major equalisation measure, if the worst team isn't getting the best hand then something has gone wrong.

I don't know what the best solution is but

No he’s got one its Brad hill because the hawks showed compassion because he won them 3 flags and he wanted to play with his brother nothing to do with a WA advantage.
The funny thing is Brad hill pissed off back to vic as soon as he played with his brother.
If ephen played for suns he would of went there

If Brad Hill is the cornerstone of his argument.

He doesn't have one.

Recall reading Hill was let go due to alcohol issues that the club was concerned about being a bad example for younger draftees in a rebuild.

It might be good for the game to grow into rugby states at any cost but its a hard pill to swallow for any supporter of a team who hasn't had success in their lifetime, we only live so long and when the league keeps adding teams and making more concessions and keeps the draft compromised for business growth I think your killing the hope of a lot of fans of actually seeing a GF win in their lifetime. Personally i'd rather see the games growth stagnate than watch a Gold Coast 3peat or dynasty off the back of just wanting to grow the game in that area.
Never even made a final in their entire history and people are complaining about them winning a threepeat. Lol.

No offence but i think the AFL made the "Growth at all costs" decision 15 years ago. They are finally seeing some return on their investment. No chance they wind it back now.

1. Adjust points values so first rounders (especially top 10) are worth significantly more than they are now.
2. Remove the 20% discount.
3. Cap the number of first round academy/father son selections in a rolling period. Say max 3 every 3 years.
4. FA compo to no longer be tied to finishing position - and be mid first round, end of first round, mid second round, end of second round etc. Remove the stupid situation where Buddy is worth 18 and McKay is worth 3. I would even consider starting at end of first round.

The lions have had heaps more father sons than freo, won 3 flags poached our best player but they need the help?…
don't worry mate i"m sure at some point in the next 50 years freo will get 3-4 great father sons on the same team and then it will be your turn in the sunshine.

Yes, I dont have a problem with F/S (I truly like the romance, though the criteria needs tweaking IMO) or academies. I have a problem with clubs getting these players so cheap. We are basically back to the same point where it used to be with bid matching, just more convoluted.

The benefit of the system should be having first rights on these kids, not getting them cheap. As well as removing the discount, I think at least for the top picks, there needs to be extra rules that ensure you cant match a bid with junk picks. Something like 75% of the points have to come from one pick or top 5 bids need a top 5 pick to match.

The system gets fixed by just forcing clubs to actually pay fair value.

What priority access do Geelong have to Geelong area players?

They have father son access but that isn't zone access.
NGAs, where they can select players who have been in elite talent pathways since before any involvement by Geelong.

Not really the same as being responsible for setting up and maintaining the sole elite pathway in rich football areas like the Hunter and Shoalhaven, is it?

I ain’t got 50 yrs I’ll be dead by then
If I last another 40 I’ll be over the moon.
That doesn’t matter because we will win a flag this decade with no priorities no father son no first rd academie selection no home ground grandfinal no dogs umpiring and it’s going to taste oh so sweet.
It will be the most pure premiership of the millennium !!

Sick of Northern clubs and their handouts, it’s a competition not a charity.

And the Swans are a destination club.

They also trade players out to get better players in.

So stop being one eyed about it.

As of now the expansion teams are all in very good shape list wise. Very good shape.

But the priority access just keeps coming. At the expense of clubs struggling to rebuild.

Time to 'get your snouts out of the trough' and let struggling clubs have their turn.

But TV rights deals are more important to AFL House as they generate executive bonuses.

Or maybe some of those perennial struggling clubs should fold or be forced interstate. There is a precedent. Woohoo, more executive bonus's.

Never even made a final in their entire history and people are complaining about them winning a threepeat. Lol.
I remember when the two most recent clubs were given all those exceptions and were touted to win numerous flags etc.. The collective is 0 premierships and a finals appearance of perhaps 50% from the two teams total existence combined

I think the scary thing is the consistent first round talent these clubs may enjoy. When AFL continually pumps out top 30 picks then things need to be considered

The issue is not the Academies, but the access to them that the northern teams enjoy. I don’t think any reasonable person could have an issue with them existing, more that the 4 northern clubs have priority access to them.

AFL Draft 2023: Clubs considered protest against league’s ‘broken’ academy system

More than half of the AFL’s clubs considered a draft protest as pressure builds on the league to review its controversial academy system.

AFL: Celebrations were rife as the Giants shock everyone by selecting forward Phoenix Gothard with pick No. 12 in the AFL Draft.
Clubs discussed not bidding on any of Gold Coast’s four academy stars in Monday night’s national draft as part of a protest against the league’s “broken” academy system.
Recruiting officials from Victorian clubs spoke about letting the Suns’ guns slide through to the late part of the draft as a way to thumb their noses at the academy concessions to northern clubs and rail against the top-40 cap on Victorian clubs.
But the plot fell over as North Melbourne made clear it would bid on powerhouse forward Jed Walter at pick three after receiving a generous concession package from the AFL in September.
Tensions about the academy system – including the four northern academies and 14 next generation academies – has reached fever pitch in recent days as clubs vented their various frustrations.

In particular, West Coast is furious it missed out on next generation academy product Lance Collard due to the cap restricting 14 clubs — outside of Queensland and New South Wales — from taking players inside the first 40 picks.
The Eagles have helped develop Collard but sat back with their hands tied as St Kilda swooped on the skilful forward at pick 28.
Essendon pinched defender Luamon Lual (Western Bulldogs academy), Collingwood took backman Tew Jiath (Hawthorn) and Geelong nabbed ruckman Mitch Edwards (Fremantle), inside the first 40 picks, making “a mockery” of the NGA system, according to one list boss.
But the four northern clubs have free reign on their local talent as Gold Coast swooped on four jets inside the first 25 picks — Walter, ruckman Ethan Read, livewire Jake Rogers and ballwinner Will Graham — leaving rebuilding West Coast in their wake.

Club officials told the Herald Sun they spoke about not bidding on the four prodigious Gold Coast academy talents as part of a stand against it, but the idea did not receive full support.
Victorian have lobbied the AFL to drop the cap on next generation academies to the first-round, meaning they have guaranteed access to NGA players outside the top-20.
The cap does not apply to the four northern states clubs — Gold Coast, Brisbane, GWS Giants and Sydney Swans.
But the 14 other clubs have pleaded with the AFL to make changes to the system to provide greater incentive and reward for the clubs south and west of the Murray River.
West Coast list chief Rohan O’Brien said the AFL had to act.
“It is really frustrating when you have done a lot of work with those (NGA) players (who are drafted elsewhere),” O’Brien said.
“It is time for a real discussion around what it might look like in the future.”

But Brisbane chairman Andrew Wellington responded to the “angst” on Wednesday, saying any attempt from the AFL to wind back the northern clubs’ academies would be an error.
The Northern clubs can draft local players from their own academy at a 20 per cent discount.
But the 14 other clubs want that discount to be removed so they pay a fairer price for top talent.
Wellington urged the AFL to ignore the complaints from Victorian clubs.
“Academies grow the game in non-traditional AFL states which makes the code stronger for everyone,” Wellington said.
“They address a disadvantage which is real and based on results there’s no evidence they have created 4 northern super clubs at the expense of other clubs.
“To unwind a strategy each time you get evidence it might be working appropriately would be a serious miscalculation.”
There is also a call to reassess the next generation academy zone boundaries for Victorian clubs due to some “barren catchment areas”.
Geelong, Adelaide, Carlton and Melbourne have only taken two players each from their NGA’s over the past eight years.

“There’s different zones are stronger than others and right at the moment if there was a way to even that up a bit, I think that would be good,” legendary Geelong recruiter Stephen Wells said.
Collingwood recruiting chief Derek Hine said he had to keep his thoughts to himself.
“I’m probably not the best one to ask about that I can tell you, I’ll get myself in trouble,” Hine said.
Damn. Wouldve been great to see the VIC clubs send a message by….. forcing the Suns to match 3rd round picks instead of 1st round picks? Got ‘em.

That's the problem though, the Academy's were meant to be for kids with absolutely no AFL background to grow the game. The fact that Kalani White is part of Qld's just demonstrates what a rort it is. There's been a long list of academy players like that, Callum Mills is another example.

The initial concept was great, what we have now is just a blatant rort of the system

I have significantly more issue with guys like Quaynor and Borlase being tied to clubs through technicalities than the northern clubs having the chance to develop locals that add to the pool.
